FC United host day of free kids’ football fun

 Source: Bury Times

STUDENTS and under-18s are being encouraged to watch a crunch football match in Bury on Saturday — and it will not cost a penny.

Supporter-owned club FC United of Manchester are holding their annual Youth United Day at Gigg Lane when they entertain Worksop Town in their bid for promotion.

Hundreds of youngsters from all over Greater Manchester can enjoy a series of fun activities in the run-up to the 3pm kick-off, including dance and drama workshops, street football sessions, banner and flag-making workshops.

People can also have their faces painted, try making badges, tackle a climbing wall, and get players’ autographs.

Among the special guests will be Mad Theatre Company, North Manchester West African Drumming Circle and Drama 2 Dance.

FC United spokesman Andy Walker said: “We hope that schools and youth groups across Greater Manchester will get involved in Youth United Day to celebrate their achievements and promote what they are doing.

“We would also like for people with links to youth organisations or groups, junior football/sports clubs who would like to help or get involved in Youth United Day to contact youthunitedday@ fc-utd.co.uk or promotions@ fc-utd.co.uk”

FC United started life in July 2005 based at Gigg Lane, although construction of their own stadium in Moston is due to start later this year.

The team has been promoted three times and currently play in the Evo-Stick League Premier Division, and narrowly missed out on promotion last season after a play-off final defeat at Colwyn Bay.

Activities begin at 12.30pm at Gigg Lane and at Holy Cross College on nearby Manchester Road.

Entry to the game costs £8 for adults and £5 for over 60s.

FC United raise enough money to move from Bury

 Source: Bury Times

Fan-owned football club FC United of Manchester has raised £1.6m to help fund the building of a new ground that will see them move from Bury to Moston.

A community share issue was launched to pay for a new football ground and community sports facility in Moston, north Manchester.

The club currently plays at Bury FC's Gigg Lane stadium.

Reaching the £1.6m target enables the club to unlock the grant funding they need to meet the costs of the £4.6m project and enable building to start on the Moston site in the spring.

FC United general manager Andy Walsh, said: "Reaching our £1.6m target from the share issue is a fantastic achievement, especially in the current economic climate.

"We believe this is the largest amount ever raised by football supporters independently. Raising capital through community shares is a unique development in English football and has been recognised as offering a real alternative to the way football is run and financed."

FC United of Manchester has worked closely with Co-ops UK.

The share schemes are designed to enable cooperative organisations like FC United to raise finance from local communities to support expansion and development much more effectively than through traditional methods such as bank borrowing.

Woodley Sports 1 FC United 4

 Source: Bury Times

FC UNITED cruised past Woodley Sports at Glossop on Tuesday night to book themselves a home tie against Lancaster City in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

After the disappointment of conceding a last-gasp equaliser in Saturday’s first meeting, Karl Marginson’s side made no mistake in the replay, running out comfortable winners against the Evo-Stik Division One North side.

They always looked in control after Carlos Roca broke the deadlock with a 28th-minute penalty after Mike Norton had been tripped by Harry Bockarie.

Both sides had chances before half time and just after the break FC defender Daniel Stott almost sliced a clearance into his own net, but keeper James Spencer managed to tip the ball round the post.

However, within five minutes Ben Deegan doubled the lead with a header from a Roca cross and the tie was effectively in the bag when Aidan Jones headed a third from a corner.

Three minutes later, Woodley got a foothold back in the game with Gee firing home a superb 25 yard shot into the top corner, giving Spencer no chance.

Gary Gee, who took the tie to a replay when he scored Woodley’s equaliser deep into added time at Gigg Lane, pulled one back for the Evo-Stik Division One North side with a terrific strike, but Norton made the most of a simple chance 10 minutes from time as United secured their first win in six matches..

On Saturday, Leading through a 39th-minute goal from Nick Platt, the Reds looked home and dry on Saturday until keeper James Spencer parried a free-kick and Gee drove a shot through a crowded area with the last kick of the game.

FC will host Division One North title-chasers Lancaster on Saturday, October 1, kick off 3pm.

On Saturday they will look to move up the Premier Division when they travel to Skelmersdale aiming to bank three points at the expense of bottom-of-the-table Burscough.

Sick boss takes to radio waves

 Source: Bury Times

KARL Marginson is set to miss FC United’s first six games as he recovers from a kidney infection.

The Rebels manager has targeted a September return after being admitted to hospital last week complaining of severe abdominal pains.

Marginson missed his new-look team’s superb 2-0 win at Stafford Rangers on the opening day of the Evo-Stick Premier Division season on Saturday.

But the 40-year-old boss, who was also absent from last night’s match against North Ferriby United as he recovers in hospital, masterminded the weekend victory against Stafford from his sick-bed.

He gave instructions to his assistant Roy Soule by mobile phone as he followed the match via the club’s website.

And he was given the perfect get well soon gift as the Gigg Lane tenants took three points with goals from Matthew Wolfenden, in the opening minute, and Dean Stott.

New-look Rebels set for promotion push this season

 Source: Bury Times

 By Caroline Oatway

FC United are aiming to go one better when they kick off the new season at Stafford Rangers on Saturday.

The Rebels are among the favourites to secure promotion from the Evo-Stik Premier League after going so close last season and, despite losing three key players over the summer, are looking to make a flying start.

Long-serving goalkeeper Sam Ashton has joined Skelmersdale, with Jerome Wright and Scott McManus, pictured, leaving for Chester and Halifax respectively.

But the Gigg Lane tenants have acted quickly to bring in eight new faces as they look to put last year’s heartbreak behind them.

After being in the bottom three at Christmas, FC, who reached the second round of the FA Cup before losing to Brighton in a replay, soared up the table to make the play-offs before losing 1-0 to Colwyn Bay in the final.

But assistant manager Roy Soule believes this year’s squad is in a better shape to mount a title challenge.

He said: “I feel that this squad has a better balance than last season. It’s more competent, more disciplined and there is more maturity about the players.

“Pre-season has been excellent. We’ve made the lads work really hard and they have responded. We’re really pleased with the lads’ approach and hopefully it will transfer into results on the pitch.”

The Rebels have snapped up former Bury goalkeeper James Spencer and ex-Burnley and Preston North End defender Dean Stott joining from Hyde. Centre-back Adam Jones also arrives, along with Scott Metcalfe, Adam Edwards, Daniel Grimshaw, Chris Horne and Paul Armstrong.

Manager Karl Marginson has also pulled off a coup with the signing of Michael Carr from Stalybridge Celtic. The midfielder has won seven caps for England C, the non-league international team.

FC follow Saturday’s trip to Stafford with a home game against North Ferriby United at Stalybridge’s Bower Fold on Wednesday.

Rebels in Park visit

 Source: Bury Times

FC UNITED will travel to old rivals Bradford Park Avenue in the Evo-Stik Premier Division play-offs on Thursday night after missing out on home advantage on the final day of the season.

Kendal Town grabbed a last-minute winner on Monday to send the Rebels to the Horsfall Stadium, with Colwyn Bay entertaining North Ferriby United in the other semi-final for a place in Monday’s final.

Captain Mike Norton’s 31st goal of the campaign had cancelled out Mark Jackson’s early opener at Gigg Lane before Kendal were awarded a penalty deep into injury time.

Stand-in goalkeeper Grant Shenton saved the spot-kick but former FC winger Danny Williams pounced on the rebound to seal the win and leave Karl Marginson’s side fourth in the table.

United moved into second last Wednesday when they beat Marine 2-1 – Norton and Ben Deegan were on target – before winning 2-1 at Matlock Town on Saturday with goals from Matthew Wolfenden and Jerome Wright

Undaunted FC find new home site

 Source: Bury Times

FC United could leave Bury at the end of next season after organisers of the non-league club confirmed they had found a site for new home.

The Evo-Stik League Premier Division side wanted to start their 2012-13 campaign at a new stadium in Newton Heath, but the proposal fell through last month when Manchester City Council withdrew £600,000 funding.

It looked like the hold up would keep the Rebels at Gigg Lane until at least 2013 and continue paying Bury up to £5,000 a game. However, United general manager Andy Walsh said the club now plans to build a 5,000-capacity ground in Moston and, if it can overcome hurdles, the first ball could be kicked there in August 2012.

FC United must now consult neighbours of the Moston site and apply to Manchester City Council for permission.

If the move goes ahead, it would be a further financial blow to the Shakers after they lost a shirt sponsorship deal with Bury Council earlier this year.

Worksop 1 FC United 2

 Source: Bury Times

A last-minute penalty by Jerome Wright sealed a victory over promotion rivals Worksop at Cannon Park as FC United came from 1-0 down at half-time to take all three points, keeping them in the play-off places with six games to go.

The Reds fell behind to a superb strike by James Cotterill in the eighth minute and it took until 19 minutes from time for Mike Norton to get them back on level terms with a low diving header – his 28th goal of the season.

With the game seemingly petering out into a draw, United were awarded a last minute penalty when centre-back Terry Barwick handled the ball in the box. Wright calmly stepped up, sent keeper Jon Worsnop the wrong way and placed his spot-kick into the bottom left corner, sending the majority of the 892-strong crowd into raptures.

It was a match that United probably just shaded but one which could have gone either way right up until the last minute. In the end, it was the Reds who grabbed another vital three points and extended their unbeaten two-month run to 14 games.

CAPTAIN Mike Norton grabbed an injury-time equaliser to earn FC United a priceless point at promotion rivals Buxton.

The Rebels striker’s last-gasp leveller kept the Gigg Lane tenants within two points off the Evo-Stik Premier League play-off places. Kieran Lugsden gave Buxton a third-minute lead, and put the fourth-placed hosts further in front nine minutes into the second half after robbing goalkeeper Sam Ashton of possession.

Norton pulled one back on 65 minutes before firing home deep into injury time to extend Karl Marginson’s side’s unbeaten run to 11 games. FC, who travelled to struggling Whitby last night (Wednesday), take on third-placed North Ferriby United at Gigg Lane in another crucial fixture.

Rebels suffer ground heartbreak

 Source: Bury Times

 By Dale Haslam

SUPPORTER-owned FC United of Manchester could extend their stay in Bury after plans to move fell through.

The Evo-Stik Premier Division side had planned to kick off the 2012-13 season at a new £3.5million stadium in Newton Heath.

But club officials announced last Friday that Manchester City Council could no longer afford to contribute cash towards the project due to Government cuts.

The club’s board said: “We are sure this news will come as a considerable shock to our supporters. We ask supporters to remain patient and resilient in the coming days and weeks.

“We stress the board remains fully committed to delivering a new home for FC United for the start of the 2012-13 season and no amount of setbacks will detract us from that pursuit.”

The club has played the lion’s share of its home games at Gigg Lane since its formation in 2005 and staff and volunteers have spent three years working on the move.

Despite the board’s efforts, the amount of work involved in finding an alternative site could mean the club stays at Gigg Lane until at least 2013. That would mean Bury would get an extra season’s rent, worth at least £100,000 to the League Two club.

The Rebels’ mood was hardly helped at the weekend when their promotion push stalled within hours of being hit by the bad news following a lacklustre 0-0 draw against lowly Mickleover.

FC, unbeaten in eight games and three points short off the play-off places, will aim to return to winning ways against Worksop Town on Saturday and at third-placed North Ferriby United on Tuesday night.

Rebels on a roll

  Source: Bury Times

LATE goals from Carlos Roca and Jerome Wright gave FC United their first win over Bradford Park Avenue and a priceless three points at Gigg Lane.

A man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Sam Ashton, which inluded numerous top-class saves was largely responsible for keeping the Rebel Reds in the game.

Karl Marginson’s men aim to continue their climb up the Evo-Stik Premier Division at Retford United on Saturday.
