FC United of Manchester 3, Clitheroe FC 0

AN eighth minute Simon Carden strike accompanied by a Rory Patterson brace, over-shadowed Clitheroe's endeavour at Gigg Lane on Wednesday night.

FC United were as impressive as ever on the counter attack with their sweeping, accurate play, but not three goals better than the Blues who had their own fair share of chances on goal.

Scott Redhead was in impressive form again with balls from the wing, and before the home side took the lead, Gary Jackson had a header tipped away by Aaron Grundy.

But again Clitheroe conceded another poor early goal when a ball over the top wasn't dealt with at more than one opportunity, flicked forward to the byline and then laid across the box for Carden to tuck away and leave the Blues in disarray.

The rest of the first half proved even enough between the two sides. Redhead had successive crosses into the box, one of which saw Joel Pilkington have a chance cleared off the line.

Then after United's Stuart Rudd crossed perfectly for Jerome Wright only for the forward to put wide from six yards out.

And James Mann warmed himself up for a starling second half display by keeping out Chris Baguley at his near post.

Carl Lomax struck a solid volley from the edge of the area that Grundy had to tip out for a corner.

Gary Jackson made way for Danny Toronczak at half-time, the forward suffering from a swollen knee, but it was United striker Patterson who found the net in the 60th minute with a well-driven free kick.

The Gigg Lane leading scorer lamped the ball home from just outside the area with a clear sight of goal, straight past an ineffective wall and a rooted Mann.

FC United continued to be rampant on the break and would have netted more if not for Mann pulling off some fantastic saves.

But the Blues sustained their own period of pressure in the home half and should really have done better when a move involving the fresh legs of substitute John Osborne, Redhead, David Hankin and Lomax resulted in the latter having a shot cleared off the line.

The Blues almost tried to walk the ball into the back of the net in the second half, while United swept forward with inch perfect balls that their pacey strikers thrived on. One, two three passes was all it took to unlock a path on goal as Jonathan Smith, Paul Osborne and Russ Clarke were kept busy.

A fantastic right wing cross from 14 traversed the width of the pitch to find its man, Chris Bauley at the back post, whose shot on goal was blocked out by Mann who then dived across goal to deny Patterson what should have been an easy rebound.

And the Clitheroe keeper almost denied Patterson again for his second goal when another raking move resulted in Wright laying the ball across goal for his strike partner at the back post. Mann got a hand to it but couldn't prevent United's 90th minute third goal.

Clitheroe: Mann, Clarke, Pilkington (Hankin), P. Osborne, Smith, Fisher (J. Osborne), Stopforth, Kozlowski, Lomax, Jackson (Toronczak), Redhead.

Clitheroe FC 2, FC United 1

A JOEL Byrom penalty and a second from the head of Paul Fildes, marked a tremendous league victory for Clitheroe over FC United on Saturday.

A crowd of 1245 attended the game at Shawbridge thanks to the numerous traveling support, 300 up on the Tuesday game last month, but unlike that night the Blues were solid throughout and creative to the end.

There was plenty of action at either end and the visitors were first to challenge on goal when Liam Foster sent Rory Patterson through with a 40-yard pass to call Paul Horridge in to action.

Clitheroe were soon challenging at the other end as Joel Byrom, Paul Fildes and new loan signing Mickey Saunders, had FC United on the back foot, calling for more than one goal-line clearance from Shaun Roscoe.

Horridge was again called on to stop Aaron Burns when the United striker was put through, but the former Manchester United player was kept quiet by the Blues back line.

But on the stroke of half-time another surging run forward in numbers by the Blues saw United's defence pulled this way and that, calling for goalkeeper Sam Aston to take down Byrom in the box and deny the attacking midfielder sight of goal.

The former Blackburn Rovers and Accrington Stanley man saw his initial spot kick saved, but to the jeers of the away support behind the goal, he made no mistake with the rebound.

In the second half, new Blues centre back Ian Flannery slid in to rob Patterson of the ball when close to goal to maintain the lead.

Before Byrom set up Clitheroe's second strike, by placing an impressive 40-yard free kick on to the head of Fildes for the former Padiham man to nod home at the back post.

United pulled a goal back with an outstanding free kick from Chris Baguley that saw Horridge at full stretch but unable to claw out from the top corner.

Time was added on to settle down the visiting support behind the goal, but it was the Blues who were boosted by the break and could have grabbed a third through the pace of Fildes, Saunders, and later substitute Gary Jackson.

Shots flew over United's cross bar as a result, while the visitors had a good effort to level near the end but substitute Peter Thompson was closed out and shot wide.

Clitheroe: Horridge, Kozlowski, J. Osborne, Flannery, P. Osborne (Overson), Fisher, Stopforth, Reynolds (Dempsey), Saunders (Jackson), Byrom, Fildes.

Clitheroe FC 0, FCUM 3

THERE was no floodlight failure for Clitheroe to answer to on Tuesday night, just a strong, well organised FC United of Manchester and defeat in front of an 800-strong crowd.

The Blues had no solution to the visitors' three goals despite having numerous half chances in the opening 45 minutes and an array of shots go wide of the mark.

In fact Clitheroe struggled to hit the target, even though they had plenty of opportunity around the United box to level before the break thanks to former Rossendale striker Neil Zarac making his debut alongside Gary Jackson.

It proved a tale of two strikers in the end, and it certainly didn't help that FC United were quick out of the blocks thanks to former Manchester United reserves top scorer Aaron Burns also making his debut.

The 19-year-old striker was picked up in the close season by Cardiff City having been released by Alex Ferguson in the summer, but Robbie Fowler and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank have left him out in the cold.

So FCUM took advantage of FA rules, which dictate he can't play above UniBond League level until the transfer window re-opens, due to contractual restrictions preventing him from moving on to a league club before January.

Clitheroe were left to bare the brunt of this remarkable signing with a goal in each half from the eager striker, either side of a Rory Patterson penalty.

Captain Patterson was equally as impressive for the visitors as he put Burns in for his first strike inside the first 10 minutes.

And after being pulled down by Kieron Fletcher in the second half, he netted from the spot to put United 2-0 up.

Clitheroe went to three at the back as a result, bringing on a third striker in Sam Heap for Adam Koslowski, only to see a mistake let Jerome Wright in down the left wing to craft a cross for Burns to volley home United's third at the near post.

Zarac and Heap saw further chances in the box closed out by the visitors' defence and further shots from distance by Craig Sargeson went over the bar. A goal just wouldn't fall, as even when Will Exton replaced Jackson near the end, it just wasn't Clitheroe's night.

Clitheroe: Mann, J. Osborne, Koslowski (Heap), Fletcher, Clarke, Fisher, Sargeson, P. Osborne, Jackson (Exton), Byrom, Zarac.

Clitheroe FC 1, FCUM 1 - MATCH ABANDONED

FLOODLIGHT FAILURE
By Adrian Capstick

FLOODLIGHT failure brought Clitheroe's home game against FC United of Manchester to a premature end on Tuesday night.

With just under 60 minutes played of this competitive fixture and over 900 fans in attendance, half the lights in the ground went out when the Blues had looked keen for their first league victory of the season.

United took the lead on 37 minutes with a well-taken strike by Rory Patterson, before Craig Sargeson equalised just before break.

The Bury-based side were a threat throughout, very quick on the attack and dangerous on the counter, but the Blues had the most chances of the first half thanks to a sprightly Peter Smith.

The Clitheroe player-manager put players half his age in the shade, belying his 42 years to push the side forward at every opportunity, using the right wing to full advantage.

Clitheroe's Chris Ward pinged a header over the bar when Smith got the better of left back Shaun Roscoe.

And Ward had a good shout for a penalty when he turned right back Matty Taylor and was tripped in the box only to see it waved away.

Patterson and Jerome Wright proved tricky in the United attack, connected in a flowing move with Nicky Platt that saw the former rifle past James Mann.

Clitheroe's equaliser came courtesy of some Joel Byrom trickery, the forward weaving his way past two challenges only to be intercepted by Taylor, the ball spilled, and Sargeson was at hand to lap up a shot past Sam Ashton.

But at 9 p.m. the lights went out, leaving the result very much in the balance.

Clitheroe: Mann, Koslowski, Clarke, Fletcher, Anderson, McKenna, Smith, P. Osbourne, Ward, Byrom, Sargeson. Subs: Daniels, Stansfield, Jackson.

Exciting week ahead

FC United come to town Tuesday

By Adrian Capstick

AN exciting week awaits Clitheroe FC as big crowds, new clubs and large rewards all feature in the Shawbridge side's plans.

FC United of Manchester are the Blues' visitors on Tuesday, and over 1,000 fans are expected to travel for the evening kick-off.

It is the first time the two teams have met for a league fixture, although a successful friendly 18 months ago saw a similar number of supporters make the trip.

Player-manager Neil Reynolds looks forward to hosting the newly-promoted club, but Clitheroe first face their longest away trip of the season at another new UniBond side in the North East on Saturday.

And after the games against Newcastle Blue Star and FC United, the Blues boss takes his side into a plum FA Cup tie at Chorley.

So with new challenges ahead, a bumper crowd to play in front of and FA Cup prize money on offer, Reynolds' side are not short of motivation.

The Blues boss said: "Newcastle have a massive pitch and a big 10,000 seater stadium they share with Newcastle Falcons rugby club. We've a full squad and it's good to bring the lads together for such a trip so early in the season.

"It builds camaraderie on the coach and helps bond the side together.

"FC United is a good one for both us and the fans, and to get anything through the gate like the numbers they command is great for the club and much needed revenue.

"We saw in our friendly with them last time what a pleasure they are to host, and it's always nice to play in front of a crowd of that capacity."

Reynolds welcomes back several players to the squad for the trip to Newcastle, and hopes to have a new left-sided player on board too.

Saturday's 3-2 FA Cup win over St Helens Town was made difficult by injuries, but that pressure has been alleviated.

He said: "We've now gone two games unbeaten. We had a good performance against Garforth and then a scrappy result against St Helens Town, which I was pleased with given our injuries.
"I was just happy to get through with what we had available to us. We put out the best team we could, changed the system at half-time and it worked for us.

"We should almost have a clean bill of health for Saturday. John Osbourne is back, Chris Ward returns, I've got over an injury and there's both Pete Smith and Paul Osbourne who came though Saturday's game."

Only Ryan Fisher, Will Exton and Sam Heap remain on the side lines.

Fisher (ankle) is a long-term casualty, Exton is out with a recurring shoulder injury and Heap, who has been biding his time for a place in the forward line, picked up a knock in training last week.

Clitheroe fans are being advised to arrive earlier than usual for Tuesday's 7-45 p.m. kick-off in order to get in the ground before the game starts. Parking will be restricted and there will be queues at the gates.

And for anyone wishing to go to the Newcastle game, a coach leaves Shawbridge at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
