Two sent off as mass brawl mars Town match

 Source: Hucknall Today

A MASS brawl resulted in two players seeing red as Hucknall Town lost a bad-tempered clash with FC United of Manchester at Watnall Road on Saturday (February 5).

All 22 players waded into the melee early in the second half after the visitors’ Matthew Tierney launched into a shocking two-footed challenge on Town’s Grant Brindley.

Punches were thrown and once the dust had settled, Tierney was dismissed for the tackle and Yellows front man Tyeisse ‘TJ’ Nightingale was given his marching orders for his part in the scrap.

The action leading up to that had been stodgy stuff with neiter side able to break the deadlock.

It was Town who eventually opened the scoring — but they still went down 2-1 to their more famous Evo-Stik League, Premier Division rivals courtesy of two strikes in the last 15 minutes.

FC United, who are nicknamed The Red Rebels, were formed in 2005 by a group of disgruntled Manchester United fans who were angry at the takeover of the Old Trafford club by Malcolm Glazer.

And against Town, it looked like FC United were on their way to replicating the Red Devils, who lost 1-0 last Saturday against Wolves in the Premier League.

For winger Callum Lloyd put Town in the driving seat on 73 minutes when he poked home after the visitors’ ‘keeper, Sam Ashton, had only parried a low cross from Fabian Smith into the danger zone.

But in front of a season’s-best crowd of 432, Town were hit by a double sucker punch.

Firstly, their lead lasted just two minutes as a through ball from Scott McManus found Simon Corden, who stroked the ball home.

Then, on 84 minutes, striker Mike Norton bundled Matty Wolfenden’s cross over the line to break Town hearts.

Town boss Tommy Brookbanks reverted to a 4-5-1 formation in an attempt to nullify the attacking flair of FC United, who had hammered The Yellows 4-1 two weeks previous.

Nightingale was the lone front man, with Dion Chambers playing in an advanced midfield position.

Behind Chambers were Josh Burge, who was making his full debut, and Jared Holmes. Martin Ball partnered Grant Brindley in defence.

On a mudbath of a pitch chances were few and far between in a dull first half and things only sparked to life on 52 minutes when the brawl erupted.

Afterwards, the game became stretched and Town almost took the lead when the ball was cleared off the line twice in quick succession.

After FC United’s two-goal salvo, Town threw the kitchen sink at the final five minutes. ‘Keeper Ross Whalin even went up for two corners, but it was to no avail.

Heavy reverse for Town on travels at FC United

 Source: Hucknall Today

LOOSE defending and slack finishing combined to cost Hucknall Town dear as they slumped to a heavy defeat at FC United of Manchester on Saturday (January 22).

The Yellows held their own for chunks of the match in front of a bumper crowd of 1,883 at Coca-Cola League Two side Bury’s Gigg Lane ground and created their fair share of chances.

But The Red Rebels were more clinical and little bit tighter in defence and recorded a 4-1 win to bolster their own play-off aspirations in the Evo-Stik League, Premier Division, while simultaneously denting Town’s hopes.

Yellows boss Tommy Brookbanks stuck with the same 11 that had beaten Worksop Town 2-0 in the Evo-Stik League Cup four days earlier.

But his young, inexperienced defence, led by stand-in captain Martin Ball, was caught in the headlights early on and conceded after just five minutes.

FC United frontman Jerome Wright got in behind the Town defence and his cross was tapped in by strike partner Mike Norton.

To their credit, Town’s backline didn’t fold and The Yellows set about getting back into the game.

Ball headed over a cross from winger Callum Lloyd and centre-back Joe Pheasant levelled the score on 25 minutes when he nodded home Dean Gent’s corner.

But the good work was undone 12 minutes later when left-back Sam Clare lost an aerial challenge and, while he lay in a crumpled heap on the floor, the ball dropped to Wright, who fired past ‘keeper Ross Whalin.

Town started the second half brightly and thought they had equalised again when Pheasant flicked home Lloyd’s centre. But the defender was flagged offside.

On the hour mark, the sizeable home crowd upped the decibel level and their players subsequently increased the tempo on the field as three efforts were thwarted in quick succession.

Up the other end, substitute Anthony Griffith Junior flashed a free-kick just wide.

Then, FC United put the game beyond doubt with two goals in the final 12 minutes.

First, former Oldham Athletic striker Matty Wolfenden lost Dion Chambers in the box and calmly slotted past Whalin.

The final nail was drilled into the Town coffin on 88 as Jake Cottrell’s 25-yard, left-footed curler beat an unsighted Whalin.

TOWN LINE-UP (4-4-2) - Whalin/ Boafo, Ball, Pheasant, Clare/ Smith, Gent, Chambers, Lloyd/ Nightingale, Gill. SUBS: Chaplin (for Nightingale 45), Brindley (for Clare 63), Griffith Junior (for Gill 70), Holmes (not used), Burge (not used).

Out-of-form Town slip further down table

Source: Hucknall Today

Published Date: 20 March 2010

DISAPPOINTED Hucknall Town's floundering play-off hopes suffered another hefty blow at FC United of Manchester.
A bumper crowd of 2,016 turned out to see two sides who had both lost their last two games in the Premier Division of the Unibond League.

But it was FC United who got back to winning ways courtesy of a 2-0 win, sealed with a goal in each half.

United owed their home supporters a performance at Gigg Lane, the headquarters they share with Coca-Cola League Two outfit Bury.

Not least because they had lost their previous home game to Unibond whipping boys Durham City, who had not won a game all season and had shipped 137 goals in the process.

As for Town, they had gone down 2-1 against Marine and lost by a solitary goal against Guiseley in their previous matches -- the first two league defeats under the management of new boss Danny Bryant.

In this clash, The Yellows found themselves behind as early as the tenth minute as Carlos Rocca opened the scoring.

The points were sealed with just 12 minutes left on the clock as David Chadwick netted the second.

The result leaves Town in the bottom half of the table in 12th position and ten points off the play-off places.

They must now look to Tuesday March 24 when they have a chance to return to winning ways against relegation-threatened Ossett Town at Watnall Road.

YELLOWS PREVIEW: wounded FC United up next

Source: Hucknall Today

Published Date: 19 March 2010

HUCKNALL Town will play in front of their biggest crowd of the season on Saturday (March 20) when they visit FC United of Manchester.
They will also be facing a wounded side who will be desperate to put things right in front of their own fans after they became the first team to lose to the Unibond League, Premier Division's whipping boys, Durham City.

FC United, who attract crowds of more than 2,000 to their games at Gigg Lane, the home of Coca-Cola League Two side Bury, were embarrassed on Saturday March 13 when Durham came away with a 2-1 win.

Prior to the game, the north-east side had lost all of their 28 matches, conceding 137 goals in the process.

FC United followed that defeat with a 4-3 loss at Matlock Town on Tuesday March 16, so The Yellows will have to be on guard for a backlash.

Trevor Hill, who is working alongside Town boss Danny Bryant, said The Yellows would be going to Gigg Lane for the win.

"We had them watched against Matlock," said Hill. "We think they are there for the taking."

Town will be without the suspended trio of Dion Meikle, Cashel Walters and Reuben Wiggins-Thomas. Defenders Adrian Hawes and David Boafo are struggling with knee and calf injuries respectively.

The Yellows are also in Unibond action on Tuesday March 23 at relegation-threatened Ossett Town.

Back to the drawing board for beaten Town

Source: Hucknall Today

Published Date: 16 November 2009

HUCKNALL Town can expect a couple of stringent training sessions this week after failing to build on their superb victory at high-flying Retford United.
Town thought they had put their dismal run of form behind them last midweek when winning 2-1 at Retford, who are now the Unibond League, Premier Division leaders.

But instead they took another step backwards when suffering a 3-2 defeat at home to lowly FC United Of Manchester at Watnall Road on Saturday (November 14) – and also missing a penalty.

The outcome was effectively sealed in the first half when United, who began the game in the relegation zone, surged into a 3-0 lead.

Phil Marsh picked up a loose ball to slot home from 12 yards in the eighth minute. Jake Cottrell doubled the lead on 27 when Town failed to clear a cross from the left. And man-of-the-match Marsh netted again, from close range, in first half injury-time.

The Yellows rallied after the break in front of their biggest crowd of the season of 573, which was swelled by more than 300 travelling fans supporting the visitors.

Recalled striker Antwon Bonnick cut the deficit on 67 when firing home from 15 yards. And they should have scored again eight minutes later when Laurie Wilson's spot-kick was brilliantly tipped round a post by United 'keeper Sam Ashton.

Town did finally pull another back three minutes from time, through top scorer Tyeisse 'TJ' Nightingale. But it came too late to salvage a point.

The Yellows now face a difficult trip to third-placed Ashton United in their next Unibond match this coming Saturday (November 21).

TOWN LINE-UP (4-4-2) – Haystead/ Walters C., Shiels, Hawes, Meikle/ Wiggins-Thomas, Ward, Wilson, Hawkridge/ Nightingale Bonnick. Subs: McCormick, Smedley, Kelly, Pembleton, Ibrahim.

YELLOWS PREVIEW: health scare ahead of FC United clash

Source: Hucknall Today

Published Date: 13 November 2009
PIG-sick Hucknall Town are hoping they don't get struck down by swine flu on the eve of their eagerly-awaited clash with rebel club FC United Of Manchester at Watnall Road on Saturday (November 14).
The match is sure to attract Watnall Road's biggest crowd of the season because FC United always take hundreds of fans with them for away games. And it will be a big boost for The Yellows to ease their cashflow problems.

But illness could yet affect the contest after Town manager Bryan Chambers revealed that winger Nathan Kelly has been struck down with the notorious swine flu bug.

Kelly was sick on the Watnall Road pitch after going on as a 79th-minute substitute during The Yellows' 1-1 draw with Nantwich Town on Saturday November 7. He was also sick after the game.

Chambers said: "His mum phoned me the day after and told me he has swine flu. Hopefully no-one else has picked it up off him, although Gary Sucharewycz has had a bit of flu recently.

"I hope we don't get an epidemic in the squad because then the kids from the academy will definitely have to come in!"

FC United and their travelling bandwagons will roll up hoping, like Town, for a good result to get their season going.

For they have flattered to deceive so far this term and sit in the relegation zone of the Unibond League, Premier Division. They have 17 points from 14 games, having won five, drawn two and lost seven.

Managed by Karl Marginson, FC United were formed in 2005 by disillusioned Manchester United supporters who were unhappy at Malcolm Glazer's USA takeover at Old Trafford.

Marginson, a former player with Blackpool and Rotherham United, has been manager since FC United were founded.

They play at Gigg Lane, the home of Coca-Cola League Two side Bury, where they have an average attendance of 1,969 in the league this season.

At three of their eight homes games, the crowd has swelled above 2,000.
In their six away games, the average crowd figure is 743, with two of the games seeing crowds above 1,000.
