Trial for FC United’s new womens team

 Source: North East Manchester Advertiser

Trials for the new FC United of Manchester women’s football team will be taking place on Sunday 10 June.

They are from 11am until 1pm at The Manchester College Nichols campus, which is just off Hyde Road, Manchester M12 6BA. Women footballers over 16 years of age are welcome at the trials.

The new FC United women’s team will be playing in the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League next season and will be managed jointly by John Marsden and Lee Sutton.

Sutton said: "Since we announced that FC United would be forming a women’s team for next season, the response has been brilliant.

"John and I are hoping that the interest will result in an excellent attendance at the trials."

Marsden is a former manager at Birkdale United Ladies and Sutton is the manager of Denton Girls.

Both have valuable coaching knowledge and experience in women’s football and both are looking forward to building a competitive team at FC United next season.

Marsden said: "I’m personally delighted that FC United will have a women’s team next season. It will be good for the club and it adds to our vision of working in and across all communities."

Manchester FA’s Get into Football strategic football manager, Fiona Callaghan, added: "This is a welcome boost for women’s football especially in the north of the city of Manchester.

"Football is the biggest team sport for females in England at the present time, so if clubs within the male game such as FC United with their passion and track record in community football are looking to create new teams, inevitably it will enable more women to play competitive football and further raise the profile of the game."

FC United star man Adam Jones has no regrets

 Source: North East Manchester Advertiser

FC United's newly-crowned fans’ player of the season Adam Jones insists he has no regrets about joining the Rebels – despite having suffered promotion heartbreak for the fifth year running.

Centre-half Jones’s debut campaign with FC ended just as his previous four had at Curzon Ashton – with defeat in the play-offs.

But, having been chosen by United’s fanatical supporters as the club’s top performer of 2011/12, the towering defender is adamant he made the right choice in swapping the Tameside Stadium for Gigg Lane.

Jones said: "Even though the season didn’t end the way we’d hoped, it was still really enjoyable for me personally.

"I’m not one for change, so leaving Curzon after six years was a big decision, but the way I was welcomed by everyone here was amazing and it has been fantastic for me ever since.

"Being named supporters’ player of the season is the icing on the cake and it has left me with a massive sense of achievement. FC United, as everyone knows, is all about the fans, so for me to have been singled out by them is really special.

"I can’t describe how it feels when they sing my name – it means so much."

Meanwhile, winger Carlos Roca has also spoken of his delight at being voted player of the year by FC’s junior fans.

He said: "This award means an awful lot to me because I try to be an exciting player and to do things which are a little bit out of the ordinary. Sometimes they come off, sometimes they don’t.

"But if our young supporters enjoy watching me that’s really great because hopefully it will inspire a few of them to try to play the same way."

Roca’s 25-yard screamer in FC’s FA Trophy victory over Altrincham was chosen as the club’s goal of the season by the Didsbury and Withington branch of the Rebels’ supporters’ club.

Striker Matthew Wolfenden was voted player of the year by his team-mates, while keeper James Spencer, who missed the Evo-Stik Premier play-off final defeat to Bradford Park Avenue with an injured hand, was manager Karl Marginson’s choice as FC’s star turn.

Spencer, Jones and skipper Kyle Jacobs each collected other branch awards while FC’s under-18s boss Dave Brown named James Brooks as his top player, with Alex Stones carrying off the players’ player prize.

‘Lucky’ FC United deserve their final place: Margy

 Source: North East Manchester Advertiser

FC United manager Karl Marginson has scoffed at suggestions the Rebels can count themselves lucky to be preparing for a second successive Evo-Stik Premier play-off final appearance this weekend.

Marginson’s men, who lost to Colwyn Bay in last season’s final, visit old foes Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday (3pm) to decide who joins champions Chester in going up to Blue Square Bet North.

Having narrowly missed out on automatic play-off qualification in finishing sixth, FC are only appearing in the promotion knockout thanks to runners-up Northwich Victoria being barred from taking part for financial reasons.

But, having seen his side book their red-letter date at the Horsfall Stadium with a stirring 2-0 semi-final victory at Chorley, Marginson insists there’s nothing fortunate about the Rebels once again being just 90 minutes away from a place alongside fellow Mancunians Altrincham, Droylsden and Stalybridge in the Conference’s northern tier.

He said: "I absolutely think we deserve to be in the play-off final against Bradford.

"Every single one of my lads was excellent against Chorley and, as for what happened to Northwich, we can hardly be blamed for having put ourselves in a position which meant we were the ones to benefit from their misfortune.

"We’ve been in this situation before and we certainly don’t want to experience the same disappointment as we did at Colwyn Bay 12 months ago.

"It was a horrible feeling – we can’t go through that again.

"Bradford hold no fears for us. They used to be our bogey-team, but we’ve now well and truly ended that hoodoo.

"We won 2-0 there in last year’s play-off semi-final and have thumped them 5-2 home and away this season.

"Bradford thrashed Hednesford 5-0 in their semi-final, so we know what they’re capable of.

"But, in spite of that result, I think they’ll fancy meeting us a lot less than we do them."

Marginson also hailed star striker Mike Norton (above) after he broke the deadlock at Chorley with a stunning 63rd minute goal when he curled delicious left-footer past Magpies keeper Russ Saunders.

Sub Astley Mulholland then added an equally well-taken second late on as FC triumphed over Magpies side who had finished seven points and three places above them in third place in the table. Marginson added: "So often games like Saturday’s are decided by a scruffy goal but Norts’ finish was straight out of the top drawer.

"That’s what he does – he’s simply a born goalscorer."

Could FC go back to United’s roots?

The rebel football club FC United of Manchester has been urged to build its planned new stadium in Newton Heath.

The club is hoping to unveil plans for a 4,000-seater ground within the next few months and Newton Heath – the area which spawned Manchester United – is seen by some fans as the romantic option.

Formed by breakaway Manchester United fans, in protest to the Glazers’ takeover of the Old Trafford club in 2005, the Red Rebels are currently ground-sharing Bury FC’s Gigg Lane stadium.

However, despite attracting average crowds of more than 2,000 per match, the financial burden of using the Bury ground has forced FC United to pursue its dream of finding its own hallowed turf with earnest.

The club is currently in talks with Manchester Council over a number of potential sites but councillor John Flanagan believes the club shouldn’t look any further than Newton Heath.

"We would certainly welcome FC United putting a stadium in Newton Heath," he said. "I know they have been looking at where United used to play when they were in Newton Heath and it would be good to bring that land back into use.

"FC United have a record of working with schools and the local community and that is the sort of club we would want here."

He added: "It would be good news, not just for the community, but the local economy.

"There is a lot of investment coming into the area. If the stadium is built it will be on a brownfield site and will bring that back into use.

"A lot of things have been clicking into place in Newton Heath in the last year and if FC United can fit into that jigsaw it’ll be fantastic. The club has the potential to grow and grow and it’ll will no doubt bring some jobs to the area."

The club itself is playing its cards close to its chest over the sites being considered. Officials say the new ground will include community facilities and that they are is optimistic an announcement is close.

FC United general manager Andy Walsh said: "We’re at quite an advanced stage. We are in discussions with the council and looking at a few sites but can’t be any more specific than that. We want to find a site that is best for the city, for ourselves and residents."

He added: "We are not at liberty to say yeah or neah over any sites. It is a matter of record that we are talking to the council but with the economic climate the feasibility of certain sites drop in and drop out.

"We’re hoping in the next few months that with the council that we can make an announcement."

A council spokesman said: "It is the council’s policy not to comment on any pre-application discussions."

Coach and team sign on for United

18/ 7/2008

FA COACH Pete Freakes has been headhunted to front the FC United of Manchester Youth Academy.

He will start out with the lads of last season’s highly successful Manchester Youth under 17s team.

The players have one more year left at youth level and will then go into open age football.

FC United have said they will give all the youth players a chance to break into the first team and earn a contract.

Freakes said: "Some of these lads have been with me for seven years, and I feel I have a duty to try and ensure they have a future in football."

The team will play in the North West Alliance League.

Freakes is pictured with some of the silverware won by his Manchester Youth squad last season.

For the love of United

MORE than 100 poems are going on sale to try to help find a new home for a grassroots football team.

Blackley poet and author Mike Duff has put pen to paper to create 'Of A Mancunian' - a celebration of forgotten Manchester people and characters from all walks of Mancunian life.

And all profits are going into a fund to finance a Manchester ground for FC United, the breakaway football team which has climbed two divisions since being formed three years ago and is currently fourth in the Unibond League First Division.

Mike - an FC United fan - was asked for the poems by Mark O'Rourke, who is on the club's development team. The individual poems have been written over the past three or four years and most have not been published before.

Home games at the moment are played at Bury FC's Gigg Lane ground, where 'Of a Mancunian' will be launched on 12 April, a day when the club is hoping for a bumper gate as under 16s can watch its game against Lancaster for free.

Mike, who has previously written stuff for The Reds' United We Stand and FC United's magazine The Soul is One, said: "I'm sick of the attitude of professional football players, the way they treat the fans and the celebrity culture around them.

"At FC United it is about making friends, not millionaires. It's bringing football back to the people."

The front cover of the book is taken at Harpurhey cemetery by the graveside of Nancy "dickybird" Cunningham, one of Manchester's forgotten characters. Nancy, who died in 1931, spent half her life drunk and was arrested 173 times for being drunk and disorderly.

Mike, 52, who lives on Victoria Avenue, said: "It starts with a poem about Nancy and finishes with what I would like to happen to my ashes when I die. There's also one about a man who was killed on the first day of the Somme, so there's a bit on the history of Manchester too."

The books are being sold at Gigg Lane and Wigan Athletic for £5 and are also available through Mike's website www.mikeduff.co.uk

MIKE is to see his first book turned into a film.

Low Life received critical acclaim when it was released in 2000 and the publicity - including a favourable Guardian review - saw it translated into French and re-released as La Racaille de Rochdale Road.

Now a deal has been signed and sealed to bring Low Life to the small screen. London-based Ruby Films are in the process of making a short film based on Mike's day in the life of a thieving north Manchester scally.

Directing the work will be Adam Smith, who has directed some of the Skins programmes for Channel Four, as well as music videos for Chemical Brothers and The Streets.

Mike, of Victoria Avenue, Blackley, said: "I was first contacted by Ruby Films two years ago but I'm a bit of a cynic, so I thought 'I'll believe it when I see it.'

"The contracts were signed about two months ago and now the screenplay is being written. I'm over the moon about it."

Mike's poem In the Rain, a celebration of Manchester's cultural diversity, won the 2004 Poem for Manchester competition and can be seen on the Manchester Curve bridge, linking Piccadilly Place to the mainline station.

United boss makes it a special night

Source: North East Manchester Advertiser

DELAMERE Rangers under 13s had a special guest helping them prepare for the new season in a new league.

Karl Marginson, team manager of FC United, took the Gorton and Openshaw club’s regular Tuesday training session in Abbey Hey as they got set to embark on their first season in the Stockport Metro League after several successful years in the Reddish and District League.

Former Macclesfield Town striker Karl said: “Delamere Rangers are a great example of what ordinary people can do for their community. In their relatively short existence they have grown from one small team to have 10 teams, and it is an honour to have them as an associate club.”

Club secretary and coach Paul Peters said: “Karl was superb. His professionalism was obvious, but his enthusiasm is what impressed me most.”

Karl, in partnership with Delamere coach Lee Rattigan, and Manchester City Council, has recently been involved in delivering coaching sessions to youngsters on the Ryder Brow estate in Gorton.

The next scheme there is due to run in the school holidays.
