FC United raise enough money to move from Bury

 Source: Prestwich and Whitefield Guide

Fan-owned football club FC United of Manchester has raised £1.6m to help fund the building of a new ground that will see them move from Bury to Moston.

A community share issue was launched to pay for a new football ground and community sports facility in Moston, north Manchester.

The club currently plays at Bury FC's Gigg Lane stadium.

Reaching the £1.6m target enables the club to unlock the grant funding they need to meet the costs of the £4.6m project and enable building to start on the Moston site in the spring.

FC United general manager Andy Walsh, said: "Reaching our £1.6m target from the share issue is a fantastic achievement, especially in the current economic climate.

"We believe this is the largest amount ever raised by football supporters independently.

Raising capital through community shares is a unique development in English football and has been recognised as offering a real alternative to the way football is run and financed."

FC United of Manchester has worked closely with Co-ops UK.

The share schemes are designed to enable cooperative organisations like FC United to raise finance from local communities to support expansion and development much more effectively than through traditional methods such as bank borrowing.

Football fans dig deep for Big Coat Day

 Source: Prestwich and Whitefield Guide

FOOTBALL fans showed support for their team and two charities on Boxing Day.

As well as cheering their side to a thrilling 2-1 win at Gigg Lane, FC United of Manchester supporters donated three van loads of clothing to good causes.

The 3,000 items will be shared between the Mustard Tree and the Boaz Trust, which both help homeless people.

Some of Bury Council’s 8,000 staff also made donations, as did workers from local firms.

And firefighters from Bury and Whitefield stations also made an appearance before the match to meet some of the supporter-owned club’s younger fans, who gained free entry to the game.

Sedgley representative and FC United fan, Cllr Alan Quinn, said: “It was great to get Bury Council’s workforce involved, “I’m sure that this will become part of their Christmas events now.

“I’d also like to thank Steve Matthews of Arco Workwear who generously donated many items of clothing too.

“From an FC United point of view, it’s another Christmas and we’re still here showing others that there is another way for football.”

Bury fire station watch manager Al Topping said: “Big Coat Day was a great success and we are pleased to have played our part supporting FC United and their continued valuable community work.”

FC United spokesman Andy Walker said: “I’d just like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all those who took time out of their Christmas to donate costs and other warm clothing to help the homeless and needy.

“Seeing the van outside Gigg Lane packed to the roof with clothing was an inspirational site and every item that we have collected will make a big difference to many people in need across our area.”

Fans must support the move to cut litter

Source: Prestwich and Whitefield Guide

1:26pm Wednesday 17th March 2010

JUST a small word of praise to both Bury FC and the council for their speedy response to provide litter bins outside Gigg Lane stadium — it really is appreciated and hopefully will cut down on some of the litter in the area!

It’s now down to the fans to rally round and use these bins — home and away supporters, not forgetting FC United, their fans and visitors.

Surely it’s not too much to ask that anyone with burger cartons, pizza boxes, drink cans, coffee cups and the variety of packaging bought at local shops can keep their rubbish in their hands until they arrive at the ground, rather than using the streets as a tip! Come on fans — the council and the football club have done their jobs — it’s now down to you!

Charity helps new children’s units

8:20am Saturday 9th May 2009

FUNDRAISERS from the borough have played a key role in getting new children’s healthcare services up and running.

On June 3, North Manchester General Hospital in Crumpsall will open a children’s unit and a paediatric accident and emergency department as part of a £32 million project.

Hundreds of Bury residents have raised cash for Prestwich-based charity MedEquip4Kids, which will supply £250,000 worth of life-saving machinery to the hospital.

Currently, children and their families have to travel to Booth Hall Children’s Hospital in Manchester, but that is being wound down, so Bury youngsters in need of treatment will have a shorter distance to travel when the Crumpsall facility opens.

The new children’s unit will have 12 paediatric consultants with support from junior staff, while the A&E department will be staffed with doctors and nurses who have been trained in the care of children.

Paediatric consultant Dr Andrew Bradley said: “We will be providing a first-class service delivered in the heart of the community.

“Our staff will provide a comprehensive general paediatric service including an in-patient medical ward, day-care surgery and outpatient clinics.”

He added: “Many of the general paediatricians and nurses have been working at Booth Hall and will be bringing their skills, experience and local knowledge to the department.”

Among those raising cash for MedEquip4Kids in recent months were fans of Bury-based football club FC United, who brought in £15,000 from a sponsored walk.

Slattery chocolatier, in Whitefield, raised £4,000 at chocolate extravaganza and pupils from Park View and Ribble Drive primary schools, in Whitefield, raised £570 at a carol concert.

MedEquip4Kids community fundraiser Lindsay Southall said: “Thanks to an overwhelming response from the public, MedEquip4Kids is within touching distance of its target and appealing for one last push to help achieve it.

“We still need support from the community and would urge anyone who is interested in taking part in one of our sponsored events or organising their own, to contact us and we will help make sure it is as successful as possible.”

Children’s charity effort hits the right note

12:00pm Monday 9th February 2009

YOUNGSTERS from two local primary schools were in perfect harmony as they helped a children’s charity one step closer to its goal.

Pupils from Park View in Prestwich and Ribble Drive in Whitefield gave an hour-long choral performance at St Margaret’s Church, Prestwich, in December.

The show raised £570 and last week pupils presented a cheque to staff from Medequip4kids.

The charity is aiming to raise £250,000 for medical facilities at the women and children’s unit being built at North Manchester General Hospital.

Lindsay Southall, the charity’s community fundraiser, said: “The concert was a fantastic success and raised far more money than we ever expected.

“As we are a Prestwich-based charity, it was great to have such an event in Prestwich and the children from both schools were brilliant.

“They sang their hearts out and we wanted to say thank you for all their hard work.”

Medequip4kids got more good news when fans from Bury-based football team FC United of Manchester presented a cheque for £10,000. The money was raised when more than 100 FC United fans took part in a family fun run in Chorlton.

Fun runners dig deep for children's charity

10:21am Tuesday 13th January 2009

By Dale Haslam

FOOTBALL fans from community-run club FC United have put their best foot to raise cash for a Prestwich-based children’s charity.

More than 100 of the Bury-based team’s supporters took part in a 5.8km family fun run in October at Chorlton Water Park raising £20,000, which has been split between the club and MedEquip4Kids.

Club staff will present the cheque to MedEquip4Kids deputy director Ghazala Baig before their league match against Prescot Cables on Saturday, January 17.

The ‘minithon’ event was the latest in a series of partnerships between FC United and the charity.

It was started by paralympian Matt Walker, of Marple, who won five medals at the Beijing Olympics last summer.

Afterwards, the hardy runners rested their tired feet in a fun day at Chorlton Irish Club, with all proceeds from that event added to the total.

MedEquip4Kids is spending the £10,000 on a new ventilator for the North Manchester General Hospital women and children’s unit. It is used to stabalise the breathing of children in the high dependency unit.

Mrs Baig said: “The support we have had from FC fans has been incredible and the amount of money raised has far surpassed our expectations.

“MedEquip4Kids would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last few months and to know that their hard work is allowing us to ensure children and babies are receiving the best care possible when in hospital."
