FC United 2 Ashton Utd 1

 Source: Tameside Advertiser

Ashton fell just short on their Boxing Day visit to Gigg Lane to face play-off hopefuls FC United.

They made the worse possible start as, with just three minutes on the clock, Matty Wolfenden controlled a through ball and struck his shot against the bar, ex-Curzon striker Mike Norton knocking home the rebound.

After 10 minutes, Mark Peers pulled the ball back for Ian Bennett whose left-footed effort was blocked before Warren Beattie volleyed over.

A couple of minutes later a great crossfield pass from Peers found Chris Amadi, who outpaced the full-back and hit a fine finish past James Spencer goal to level.

Midway through the half a long cross by Lee Neville saw Nicky Platt head wide for FC and Carlos Roca was then fouled by George Melling, the resultant free kick being headed wide by Adam Jones.

On the half-hour Wolfenden’s searching cross was too high for Norton and Stephen Johnson’s follow up hit the side netting.

Neville then won a challenge in midfield and fired off target from 20 yards.

The ball was then deflected through to Jones, whose near post effort was blocked as the home side continued to press.

After the restart a ball into the area by Peers saw Aaron Burns beat his marker and fire narrowly wide from a tight angle.

At the other end, a cross by Wolfenden was headed back across goal and as the Ashton defence stood and watched, the ball dropped to Neville who scored with a left-footed effort from six yards.

Amadi then played the ball through to Ian Bennett, whose effort was saved by Spencer and Burns then had his deflected effort saved.

Wolfenden played the ball square to Roca who fired over from 20 yards.

Amadi was then fouled resulting in a free kick which dropped to Burns who fired home, only for the goal to be disallowed for dangerous play.

Midway through the half, a long ball found Norton completely unmarked on the penalty spot.

He controlled the ball and set up Johnson, whose effort was blocked and Norton fired the rebound wide.

With 15 minutes left on the clock Amadi made great progress to pull the ball back to Burns, who looked certain to equalise, but saw his effort denied by a superb save from Spencer.

As Ashton pressed for the equaliser, FC broke away and substitute Daniel Grimshaw was played clear by Norton only to screw his effort wide.

BOTH managers were in agreement that the difference between the two sides was in the ability to convert chances into goals.

The early stages were evenly contested, although Sam Ashton produced a superb save to tip over a header from Ashton’s Matty O’Neill in only the third minute.

Both sides looked dangerous; the home side came close on several occasions, as Gareth Richards and Pat McFadden both managed to get in behind the visitors’ defence, but failed to capitalise on some good situations.

It was perhaps against the run of play that Phil Marsh put the visitors ahead, mid-way through the first half. Jerome Wright’s cross fell invitingly at Marsh’s feet and he placed a low shot into the corner.

From that point on the away side looked the more threatening, but it took until two minutes before the interval for a further goal to arrive.

It was well worth the wait, as defender, Adam Tong, struck a piledriver from fully 40 yards out, over bemused Ashton keeper, Terry Smith, and in to the top corner.

Within a minute, the Robins were back in it, when O’Neill cut inside, before striking a left-footed shot beyond Sam Ashton to almost stunned silence from the visiting supporters.

In the second half, both sides had good chances throughout. Former Ashton striker, Ben Deegan, was denied by Smith and struck another shot just wide.

Ashton then had a good spell of possession, but seemed unable to find the right pass in the danger areas.

They were made to pay 20 minutes from time when Carlos Roca fired home a rasping shot from just outside the penalty area, following good play from Marsh.

Ashton boss Danny Johnson lamented: "We can’t miss chances like we did if we want to be a top side.

"I felt the players played the occasion in the first half, rather than the opposition. However, in the second half they gave their all and deserved better than they got."

CHILDREN aged under 16 can watch Hyde United’s friendly against FC United at Ewen Fields on Saturday free of charge.

The scheme is part of a link-up between the club and the local authority as the Tigers conclude their pre-season programme against the UniBond Premier League outfit.

Tigers boss Neil Tolson has been busy over the summer, adding the likes of Lincoln Adams, Nathan D’Laryea, Paul Gedman, Michael Jones, Aidan Kirkbride, David McNiven, Scott Mooney and Robbie Smith to some of last season’s squad.

Aside from Tolson the 2008/09 squad members returning to Ewen Fields for the new campaign are Daniel Douglas Pringle, Gerry Harrison, Mark Lees, Chris Lynch, Tom Manship and Lee Rick.

Fellow Blue Square North side Stalybridge Celtic are also in action on Saturday when they travel to Ilkeston Town to play Worksop Town.

That will be followed by a friendly against Manchester City at Bower Fold on August 4, four days before their opening league game at Redditch United.

The Celts were in action against an Oldham Athletic youth development squad as the Advertiser went to press on Tuesday night.

They were hoping to continue the run of pre-season form that had seen them win 1-0 at a Buxton side managed by former Celtic boss John Reed.

That had been followed by a 0-0 draw at FC Halifax Town where the hosts included former Celts Paul Sykes, Steve Payne, Tom Baker and James Dean.

Coping with Rebels

ASHTON survived a late onslaught to secure three points at Hurst Cross.

Overnight frost put the match in some doubt, but by kick-off time, the pitch was fine and both sides passed the ball around well.

The home side began well as Ian Bennett started and finished a move that spanned the length of the field, but his final shot flew just over the crossbar.

Chris Baguley replied with a shot off target from Jerome Wright’s lay-off before glancing a header just wide of the upright.

Wright brought a fine save from Terry Smith, who pushed the ball onto the post before Adam Carden’s low shot deflected off a defender’s heels for a corner.

It was Ashton who took the lead with a well-worked goal as Ben Smith won the ball before producing a perfect cross for Ben Deegan to head past Sam Ashton.

Soon after this, Carlos Roca was introduced as a substitute for The Rebels, a move that gave their attack greater impetus.

However, the Ashton defence and keeper coped well with everything that was thrown at them for the remainder of the half.

The visitors made a good start to the second half, playing some dangerous balls into the Ashton penalty area, but Terry Smith was in commanding form and claimed most of the high balls.

When the home side attacked, the two wide players, Matty O’Neill and Iain Howard, both caused problems, the latter firing a low shot that Ashton did well to hold.

Bennett almost increased the lead with a low shot that was deflected for a corner, while at the other end, Roca’s cross fell to Wright whose shot came back off the upright before being claimed by Terry Smith.

Ashton doubled their lead when Howard’s through ball to Callum Flanagan saw the striker initially denied by Ashton, only for the ball to squirm from his grasp and Flanagan to convert from close range.

Then, in the second minute of stoppage time, Tommy Turner turned in a Wilson shot from close range, to give the away side hope.

There was a long delay as Ashton defender Alex Frost received treatment for a head injury sustained in the lead up to the goal before being stretchered off unconscious.

When play resumed, the home side regrouped and played out the remaining time to secure a vital three points.

Sealing Giggs swoop

Source: Tameside Advertiser

CURZON Ashton have moved quickly to snap up former Mossley winger Rhodri Giggs after he parted company with FC United on Monday.

Giggs (pictured) scored 15 goals in his 37 appearances during FC’s title-winning campaign last season which saw them secure promotion into the UniBond League along with Curzon.

However, Giggs’ arrival was quickly followed by one player going through the exit door as the former Stalybridge Celtic and Hyde United defender Dave German departed the Tameside Stadium.

Curzon manager Gary Lowe said: “When I heard Rhodri had parted company with FC, I knew that I would have to move quickly to secure his signature as I felt sure that there would be interest in him from a number of other clubs.

“Not surprisingly we know a lot about Rhodri having come up against him as we did last season as well as watching him in one or two other games, and with a couple pre-season games to go before the season starts, he’ll obviously figure very heavily in those games.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t working out with Dave and so we both agreed that it would be best if we parted company now rather than later.

“It gives him the chance to find another club and for us to find a replacement before the kick-off to the season. We wish him well.”

Curzon, who lost 2-0 at UniBond South newcomers Quorn last weekend, come up against Sheffield FC at the Tameside Stadium with the visitors – who won last season’s Northern Counties East League Premier Division – reputed to be the oldest club in football, formed almost 150 years ago in October 1857. The game kicks off at 2pm with admission £5 for adults and £2 concessions.

Young United fans are onto a winner

Source: Tameside Advertiser

REBEL club FC United are offering kids in Tameside the chance to watch the team for free this season.

The local supporters branch has four tickets available for each and every match just waiting to be snapped up.

The club, which was set up by protesting Manchester United fans opposed to the takeover by American businessman Malcolm Glazer, is keen to forge strong links with youngsters and is determined not to see them priced out of watching football.

Successive promotions in their first two seasons will see the club locking horns with Mossley and Curzon Ashton in the league next season. Kind-hearted kit man George Hayden, of Old Road, Ashton, bought two extra junior season tickets to give out free and the club has matched his generous offer.

George, 42, said: "The idea to buy additional season tickets on top of our own renewals and then offer them out to kids across Manchester came from a supporters meeting we held.

"So we now have four and are offering them to kids in the area on a match-by-match basis to whoever wants them.

"The only criteria is that they have to live in Tameside and be under 18.

"We initially have four tickets per match to offer, but if any schools or youth groups are interested it might be possible to get more from the larger pool."

Fellow volunteer Vinny Thompson added: "This is just another example of the work the club is doing with communities across Manchester.

"Here in Tameside the club is looking to extend their work with St Peters Youth, Tameside Youth Prevention Services and Dovestones at Tameside College."

Anyone interested in the offer should log on to www.tamesideisred.co.uk, email George at georgehayden9@aol.com or call Vinny Thompson on 07792 833 086.
