Wade still upbeat despite first loss

 Source: The Journal

TOM Wade’s honeymoon period as Blyth boss is over, writes STEVE BROWN.

But having pushed FC United of Manchester so close, the new Spartans manager insists his side is in the right shape to progress.

The Croft Park club had posted back-to-back wins with Wade in charge, first in former manager Paddy Atkinson’s work-enforced absence at Kendal Town, then following Atkinson’s resignation against Ilkeston.

The Manchester United breakaway club would prove a different matter, however.

But in front of a crowd of 1730 at Bury’s Gigg Lane, Blyth took FC United to the wire, and were unfortunate to come away without a point.

“We want to push on,” said Wade.

“Without being arrogant about it, Blyth Spartans shouldn’t be in the position we are in.

“Yes, relegation last season has left the club with a bit of a hangover, and it’s true we don’t have a divine right to be up at the top, or in the league above.

“But I think the atmosphere here now is right, and we’re ready to progress.

“It will be hard to win a lot of games with so many to pack in before the end of the season.

“But we’ve got a good set of lads, the shape and the system are good and if they work hard we can start to climb the table.”

That will have to wait until Wednesday’s trip to Ashton United after defeat in Lancashire, but Spartans can take encouragement from their performance.

Though the hosts’ Dean Stott went close early on, Blyth shocked their opponents by going in front after 11 minutes.

Dan Maguire’s determination forced a corner, and from Stephen Turnbull’s flag-kick, Joe Kendrick headed past James Spencer from 10 yards, his second goal in as many games since coming off the transfer list.

Sam Fitzgerald then went close to equalising before half-time, and after the interval Lee Mason set up Maguire, who forced a fine save from Spencer.

As play became increasingly scrappy, Ashley Mulholland curled wide for the home side, and Robbie Dale’s effort clipped the crossbar.

Moments later, FC United struck twice in as many minutes.

Carlos Roca latched onto a poor clearance by Blyth, and Mike Norton tapped in from close range, then a mishit shot by Roca bobbled past Mark Cook, making his Blyth debut, off Tom Greaves.

FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER: Spencer; Stott, Neville, Birch, Jones, Lacy, Mulholland (Greaves), Fitzgerald (Giggs), Norton, Wright, Wolfenden.

BLYTH SPARTANS: Cook; Airey, Slaughter, Kendrick, Buchanan, Turnbull (Berg), Mason, Hooks (Jennings), Hubbard, Maguire, Dale.

Referee: Mr K Haycock.

Attendance: 1,730.

City boss Ord has decisions to make

 Source: The Journal

DURHAM CITY boss Dickie Ord is weighing up the pros and cons of making changes to his line-up for tonight’s Durham County Challenge Cup tie against Sunderland RCA at New Ferens Park, writes JAMES HUNTER.

The Citizens go into the first-round clash on the back of a six-game winning streak in all competitions and Ord wants to keep that momentum going, with an FA Trophy tie against FC United of Manchester coming up this weekend.

But he is also aware of the need to give his squad players an outing, and possibly rest key men ahead of the FC United game.

“I haven’t decided whether to go down the road of making changes or not, as yet,” he said.

“I’ll either make wholesale changes or none at all.

“It’s a difficult one, though, because there are reasons for and against.

“On the one hand, we are on a great run of form and I don’t want to do anything that will risk that coming to an end.

“But I also have a responsibility to the squad players who travel up and down the country with us, often without seeing much action.

“We have a squad of 21 or 22 players and they need to get some match action so that when they are needed, they don’t come into the side cold.”

Ord has a full squad to pick from tonight, with defender Dan Madden available again after serving a two-match ban.

Durham’s winning run continued at the weekend as they came back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 against Mossley in the Evo-Stik First Division North.

And Ord wants his side to show the same fighting spirit in their cup games this week.

He said: “It was a terrific fightback from the lads at Mossley after we had conceded three bad goals.

“To come back from 3-0 down to win shows the spirit in the camp.

“I said last week that I wanted us to go into these two cup games on the back of six wins, and that’s what we will do.

“Obviously, all the attention has been on the FA Trophy tie against FC United of Manchester, but we have a big game against Sunderland to focus on first.

“We beat them in pre-season and they will be out for revenge. They play in the Northern League Division One and will see us as a scalp, so we have to make sure that we don’t slip up against them.”

FA Cup Third Qualifying Round / STL Northern League

 Source: The Journal
Oct 11 2010 by Malcolm Pratt

THE four STL Northern League clubs all fell by the wayside in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

Shildon were closest to a result when they went down by a single goal to Blue Square Bet North side Workington.

Sam Garvie fired the Durham side in front but by the 14th minute the Reds were ahead courtesy of Gareth Arnison and Anthony Wright.

Workington captain David Hewson was red-carded after 25 minutes but Shildon were unable to make the numerical advantage count.

After conceding two goals in four minutes to Droylsden’s Keiron Kilheeney and David McNiven, Ashington reduced the arrears through Steven Young – however, the goalscorer then failed to convert a penalty.

In the late stages, the Colliers pressed in search of an equaliser and left the way open for Jody Banim and Lewis Killeen to end their hopes.

Whitley Bay played an hour with 10 men after Chris Fawcett was sent off for bringing down a Guiseley player.

James Walshaw scored the resultant penalty and despite a battling performance, the Seahorses went out as Joe O’Neil and Walshaw wrapped up a comfortable victory for the hosts.

A crowd of 1576 saw Norton and Stockton Ancients go down 5-2 at home to FC United of Manchester.

Dale Mulligan and Shaun Clarke cancelled out Mike Norton’s early goal for the visitors who finished strongly, scoring four times in the last 25 minutes through Glynn Hurst, Ben Deegan and Norton, who completed his hat-trick.

Consett remain out in front in the STL Northern League Division One but they left it late before edging Penrith by the odd goal. Dean Douglas was an early scorer for the Cumbrians and after Jonjo Dickman levelled, he claimed the winner with just a minute left on the clock.

Bedlington Terriers are second and the leading scorers after they found the net four times in the home fixture with Tow Law Town.

Alex Benjamin bagged a brace with Keith Graydon and Richard Hodgson taking Terriers’ total to 38. The Lawyers’ Steven Tobin was red-carded on 52 minutes.

Spennymoor Town remain third and their man of the match at Billingham Town was Michael Rae who scored the first four goals. Alan Cosavella was unfortunate to turn the ball into his own net for Moors’ fifth.

Newcastle Benfield moved into fourth position when a brace from Brian Dodsworth edged them to victory at home to Dunston UTS, who led through Steven Preen. Benfield played for 64 minutes with 10 men following the dismissal of Kevin Leighton.

Esh Winning finally tasted success at the 14th attempt when they hit Ryton with a seven-goal defeat.

Stuart Thompson (3), Craig Marron (pen), Mark Nixon, Ian Ward and Brian Hogg all beat Ryton’s debutant goalkeeper Peter Adnitt.

A last-minute penalty by Michael Pattison, his first goal since his transfer from Seaham Red Star, earned North Shields a valuable point in the Division Two game with Birtley Town.

James Luccock scored his fifth goal in two games giving the Robins the lead and after Martin Raper levelled, Chris Tate fired Birtley in front before Pattison remained cool under pressure to deliver the equaliser from the spot.

UNIBOND LEAGUE ROUND-UP

Source: The Journal - no online content

Newcastle Blue Star 0 FC United of Manchester 4

FOLLOWING a dramatic U-turn Newcastle Blue Star were yesterday re-admitted into the UniBond League Division One North

Only a few weeks ago the Kingston Park club stunned the North East football scene by announcing they had applied to be relegated back into the Arngrove Northern League after one season.

At the time, they blamed the long journeys for the decision but since then results have improved significantly and Saturday’s defeat by FC United of Manchester was their first in eight games.

The club refused to comment last night other than to confirm that a meeting of the UBL management committee held in Cheshire ratified their application for the earlier decision to be rescinded.

Paul Baker’s side were playing their fourth game in eight days on Saturday and it showed, particularly in the later stages, when tired legs were much in evidence. In the first half, however, they just about held their own even though the visitors enjoyed much more of the play.
