Kendal keeper scores in epic encounter

 Source: Westmorland Gazette

Kendal Town 3, FC United of Manchester 1 KENDAL keeper Tom Newton scored a goal and saved a penalty in an action-packed encounter at Parkside Road.

With the scores level at 1-1, Newton delivered a standard kick from his hands into the United half on 52 minutes. The ball bounced once near the halfway line, but it was the second bounce towards the edge of the FC box which had opposition keeper James Spencer floundering. As the wind and rain pushed the ball on, Spencer could not quite claw the ball away, and the ball ended up in the back of the net.

It was an entertaining affair in which FC United bossed the first half of the match. Centre-back Adam Jones headed two efforts wide after a barrage of United corners, while Jake Cotterell had a 20-yard strike deflected onto a Kendal post as the home side rode their luck.

But somehow Kendal went in at the break 1-0 up. Mark Jackson, who has started the season brilliantly for Kendal, danced around two players on the edge of the Manchester box, and placed an exquisite finish into the left hand corner.

As usual, FC United brought their legion of fans, with 635 people gracing Parkside Road, and the travelling supporters were given something to cheer about just 60 seconds into the second half.

Mike Norton threaded a through ball which beat the Kendal offside trap, leaving United with two strikers against Newton. Michael Carr squared the ball for Mathew Wolfenden, who slotted the ball into an empty net for a deserved equaliser.

But five minutes later, Newton’s freak goal put Kendal back in the lead.

And the Black and Whites got a third on the hour mark after a stinging Ciaran Donnelly effort was parried by Spencer. The ball was cut back to the edge of the area and Donnelly moved in to fire into the back of the net.

FC United kept up the pressure - a fine effort from Norton resulting in a great save to his right from Newton on 65 minutes. Kendal also had a chance when the United keeper was forced to punch a ball to safety after great pressure from Danny Williams.

Five minutes later, Cotterell lobbed a great ball for Wolfenden, who tried to flick the ball past Kendal captain Marc Joseph. But the referee judged Joseph to have handled, and awarded a penalty.

Up stepped subsititute Steve Torpey with the penalty, but Newton produced a sensational dive low to his right to keep the effort out, before a United player blazed the ball over the bar.

The rest of the game ebbed and flowed as both teams searched for another goal, but Kendal prevailed to a win which lifts them up to third in the table, just one point behind joint leaders Chorley and Northwich Victoria.

A DANNY Williams goal with virtually the last kick of the game earned Kendal Town a final day victory at FC United of Manchester this afternoon.

The tie was evenly poised at half time after Mike Norton had cancelled out Mark Jackson's opener.

But when Ashley Dunn went down in the box, Keiran Walmsley's spot kick was tipped onto the post, but Williams reacted first to poke home for a 2-1 victory.

Gray thunderbolt seals Kendal victory against FC United

Evo-Stik Premier League.

Kendal Town 3 FC United of Manchester 2.
A DOUBLE from central defender Shaun Gray sealed a 3-2 victory for Kendal Town as they made it four wins from five against FC United of Manchester tonight, Tuesday.

In a classic non-league encounter two of the league's form sides met and it was a great advert for the Evo-Stik Premier League.

Town took the lead on 39 minutes after Jake Cottrell lunged in on Chris Ward.

After a stoppage in play and a booking for Cottrell, Walmsley fired a ball deep into the box from the right touchline and Gray bagged his first Town goal with a well directed header to the bottom right corner.

But it was 1-1 before the break, despite Town dominating play.

Simon Carden collected 12 yards out and he struck low to the bottom corner under Newnes, who was struggling with injury.

Boss Lee Ashcroft replaced Newnes and the injured Mark Jackson (hamstring) with Tom Newton and Jack Smith at half-time, and Smith gave Town a lift as they looked to regain the lead.

But the sucker punch was dealt just four minutes into the second half, when FC United took a 2-1 lead.

Jerome Wright beat Newton to the ball out to the left of the Kendal area and knocked it goal bound.

Despite the efforts of George Melling getting back the ball crossed the line before he could kick it clear.

Town showed their grit and determination to get back into the game and levelled just two minutes later.

And it was another Walmsley specialty, this time from the left win which set up the goal and Carl Osman was on hand to head home beyond keeper Sam Ashton.

Just four minutes later Town had used all their subs when Osman pulled up with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Mat Ashcroft.

Town were rejuvenated after their equaliser and an end to end match had the 508 fans cheering throughout and when Gary Stopforth was fouled on the edge of the box, you would have expected Walmsley to have a strike.

But new boy Gray placed the ball for the free kick and blazed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of Ashton's goal for 3-2 on the 70 minute mark.

As Town pushed for a fourth FC United fancied a counter attack goal with Wright and Mike Norton both going close after escaping their markers.

And in the dying seconds Nicky Platt should have levelled from two yards out but the ball went through him from the corner and Melling blasted it upfield.

A draw would have been a fair result on the night but boss Ashcroft will be delighted with his side as they grow in confidence.

Town climb to seventh in the league and will travel to fifth-placed Marine on Saturday where they will aim to make it five wins from six.

HOW THEY RATED: David Newnes 7 (rep Tom Newton 45mins 7), Keiran Walmsley 8, Adam Sumner 7, George Melling 7, Shaun Gray 8, Gary Stopforth 7, Carl Osman 7 (rep Mat Ashcroft 61mins), Mark Jackson 7 (rep Jack Smith 45mins 7), Alex Taylor 7, Ashley Dunn 8, Chris Ward 8.

The Town keep marching on

9:04pm Monday 7th September 2009

By Richard Edmondson

The start of the season has been pleasantly surprising; another 3 points at the weekend and Town sit proudly at the top and 4 points clear of the chasing pack.

Even the most die hard of Kendal fan must be surprised by Town’s good start to the season.

The 1-0 home win over FC United, was eventful to say the least, the 1st half Kendal had enough chances to be comfortable, however in the 2nd half, FC United fought back and had Kendal on the back foot.

And I felt a combination of good defending and poor shooting on goal by FC United helped Kendal to victory.

It was actually a very strange 2nd half, the referee lost control which didn’t help. When an official loses control that tends to upset the rhythm of things and for this match the 2nd half was chaotic. Michael Cole being sent off for Town was controversial. I suppose I would say that but I didn’t see what he had done wrong as such.

Officiating at best is a difficult job and they can only give what they see and what they feel is the right decision, however common sense is lacking from the man in the middle and his assistants, and sometimes they make life harder for themselves.

I read a post on the Kendal Town forum where someone said the officials are anti Kendal, I would personally disagree with that as a few weeks ago Kendal were awarded a penalty at Ashton, and it was no where near a penalty, infact the Ashton defender put in a good clean challenge and won the ball. However the ref gave it and I wasn’t complaining nor were the Town fans, so it’s not only us because the rest of the league has the same problem But all players, and fans ask for is common sense and consistency, and if officials give that then they have done their job to the best of their ability.

Tuesday night sees Kendal make the trip to play Ossett Town at the Ingfield stadium. It’s traditionally not a happy hunting ground for Kendal; they went their last season and lost 5-1 in controversial circumstances.

Ossett, have had a mixed start to the season, they are weakened by the loss of both Aidan Savoury and Simon Baldry, but are strengthened by the goals of Adam Clayton. They also have a new man at the helm with Paul Lines taking over.

It will be an interesting test, Kendal being league leaders means that they are their to be shot down, and other teams are going to give that extra 10-20% to try and end the teams unbeaten record.

Hopefully the lads can go their and get a result and keep the fine start going!

Check out a photo I did of the match!

The perfect bank holiday!

8:31pm Tuesday 1st September 2009

As a fan the good times keep rolling at Kendal Town FC, the traditional bank holiday fixtures are always huge tests, but for Kendal to pick 6 points from the 2 games is more than what even the most die hard of Kendal fans would have hoped for.

Both matches were quite different; Saturdays 4-1 home win over Marine was relatively straight forward, Kendal, were just a class above on the day. Whilst the Whitby away match on Bank Holiday was a massive battle, so to win 3-2 in the 95th minute shows how far the team are progressing.

The man of the moment is Kieran Walmsley, he can’t stop scoring, he had 5 going into the weekend already and has already added on to that tally reaching 8 so far!

All the goals he has scored have been stunning strikes, that goal at Ashton a few weeks ago was a screamer, on Saturday he scored 2 sensational free kicks and on Bank Holiday Monday he scored another screamer volleying the ball home at the death.

This unbeaten start has put Kendal couple of points clear at the top, and even though it’s still relatively early days, Town are looking hard to beat, on Saturday they face another challenge when they host FC United. There is set to be 1,500+ their on the day, that match last season helped Kendal through financially till the end of the season, FC’s fan base is huge and they are always a good set of supporters!

Their will be one heck of an atmosphere on Saturday, Kendal will be looking to keep their good start going, whilst FC who after a slow start to the season are gradually coming back into form again!

Town sunk by FC United

6:19pm Saturday 21st February 2009

KENDAL Town’s recent resurgence came unhinged today as they lost 2-1 at home against FC United in front of a bumper crowd of 1010.

Despite a strong second half performance, Town didn’t quite have enough in their locker as they attempted to respond to the two-goal lead FC United had established in the first half.

Jerome Wright opened the scoring for United after only 12 minutes of play. The number ten had found the ball at his feet in the area after Calos Roca’s effort had been blocked. The striker sent a low shot past David Newnes at the keeper’s right hand post.

United’s second which arrived on 28 minutes came with a hint of controversy. A sweeping move forward saw Roca slip a pass in behind the Town defence to Simon Carden. The midfielder looked suspiciously offside and for a half second the game stopped as both sets of players looked to the linesman, however, with no flag raised the number eight poked the ball past the oncoming Newnes to make it two.

Kendal had failed to force United stopper Sam Ashton into making any real saves in the first half, but as they settled into their game for the second period they began to pick ways through the FC back line.

Defender Simon Garner had keeper Ashton to thank for sparing his blushes on 50 minutes. The defender very nearly turned the ball into his own net after Mulvaney had jinxed his way into the box and sent a fizzing ball into the six-yard area that would have ended up in the top corner after Garner’s connection, but for athleticism of Ashton.

The referee lit a fire under the large FC United support when he awarded a penalty against Adam Tong. The number six was judged to have handballed Ian Kilford’s 63rd minute strike and was given a lengthy talking to by the referee to a back drop of cat calls and whistles from the FC fans who were making their feelings on the decision very clear.

Half time substitute Michael Cole stepped up and buried the spot kick into the bottom right and set up a fiery finish.

Knowing a third goal would decide the fixture both teams continued to attack and both came close to scoring. Carlos Roca had an effort hooked off the line by David Standley, while Craig Hobson almost had a clear shot on an unguarded goal as a collision between Taylor and Ashton so nearly presented the striker with the ball, but the bounce was unkind and the chance evaporated.

Kendal attacked into the dying moments but despite their best efforts they could not muster a dramatic equalizer and FC United go home with all three points.

A look ahead to the weekend's sport

1:49pm Monday 16th February 2009
