United fan Norton joins FC United
Source: Manchester Evening News
FC United have signed prolific goalscorer Mike Norton from UniBond Division One neighbours Curzon Ashton.
Norton has scored more than 200 goals for Curzon and netted 41 times last season.
But even that phenomenal strike rate was not the best of his career as Norton netted an amazing 51 times in season 2007/08.
Norton has been a loyal servant to the Tamesiders since their formation in 2005. But after losing out in the UniBond Divison One play-offs for the third year running this April, he has decided it was time to move on.
Norton said: "I felt things were going a bit stale for me at Curzon and, being a big United fan, playing for FC United will be the next best thing.
"Maybe I could have gone a bit higher up, but I'll get to play in a United kit and the fans sing United songs.
"I am really looking forward to that and hopefully I can helped them get promoted to the Blue Square North."

Norton a difficult act to follow

Curzon Ashton boss Gary Lowe has been dealt a blow with the loss of prolific striker Mike Norton to FC United of Manchester.
The 29-year-old, who bagged 41 goals for Curzon last season, has opted for a fresh challenge after suffering a third consecutive play-off reverse in UniBond League Division One North.
After scoring more than 200 goals for Curzon, Norton explained his reasoning for moving one division higher.

"I’m really looking forward to that and, hopefully, I can help them get promoted to Blue Square North."
It would not be the first time that Norton has been involved with The Rebels this year.
Last month, Curzon let Norton – who was still under contract with the club – travel with Karl Marginson’s squad to their match against St Pauli in Hamburg.
Norton duly scored for United in a match celebrating the German’s club’s centenary.

FC United boss Karl Marginson has significantly boosted his firepower by signing prolific striker Mike Norton from neighbours Curzon Ashton.
Norton, 29, bagged 41 goals for the Nash last term, taking his Curzon career total past 200, but has now opted for a fresh challenge with the rebel Reds after tasting defeat in the UniBond North promotion play-offs for the third year running.
“I felt things were going a bit stale for me at Curzon and, being a big United fan, playing for FC United will be the next best thing,” he said.
“Maybe I could have gone a bit higher up, but I’ll get to play in a United kit and the fans sing United songs. I’m really looking forward to that and, hopefully, I can help them get promoted to Blue Square North.”
ALTRINCHAM have been buoyed by their England C international star Shaun Densmore signing up for another season at Moss Lane.
The right-sided 21-year-old, who earned his fourth international cap against the Republic of Ireland a fortnight ago, has become the sixth member of Graham Heathcote’s squad to commit his immediate future to the Robins.
EX-ALTY midfielder Lewis Chalmers is preparing to go back to his non-League roots after being released by League Two Aldershot.
The 24-year-old former City trainee, who spent three seasons with Altrincham before helping Aldershot return to the League as 2008 Blue Square Premier champions, is on the radar of a number of Conference clubs.
STALYBRIDGE Celtic chief Jim Harvey is preparing to reveal his first batch of signings following the club’s switch to full-time status.
Only winger Greg Wilkinson and striker Connor Jennings are under contract at Bower Fold, although veteran defender Tim Ryan has agreed to stay as Harvey’s assistant. Syd White has stepped up to chief executive.
NEW Leigh Genesis manager Mark Maddox has named the club’s long-serving midfielder Andy Heald as player-coach.
CHESTER FC will have to wait another week to discover which league they’ll be playing in next season.

Rory Patterson wins Player of the Year award

Source: BBC
Coleraine's prolific striker Rory Patterson was named as Player of the Year at the Carling Football Writers' Awards on Monday night.
Patterson, who also won the Golden Boot award as top scorer with 41 goals, is set to join Glentoran this summer.
Linfield's double-winning boss David Jeffrey picked up the top manager honour while Cliftonville forward Liam Boyce took the young player award.
Former NI manager Billy Bingham was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Bingham famously led his team to the World Cup finals in 1982 and 1986.
As well as having two spells as Northern Ireland boss, Bingham was in charge of Everton from 1973 to 1977 and also managed the Greek national team, Plymouth Argyle and Irish League club Linfield.
Championship winners Loughgall scooped the junior team gong with Limavady's Paul Owens taking the top Championship player award.
The Merit Award went to Eric Halliday, a successful manager in junior football with clubs including Killyleagh, Moyola Park and Bangor.
Patterson is the first Bannsiders player to win the top honour since Felix Healy in 1982.
The former FC United of Manchester hitman made his Northern Ireland senior debut in March's friendly against Albania.
Patterson has signed a pre-contract with Glentoran for next season but the 25-year-old's long-term target is a return to the English game.

FC United in Europe!
Source: Manchester Evening News

May 01, 2010
The Reds of Manchester are on their way to wave the flag in Europe again.
This time, though, it's not Fergie's Old Trafford superstars - but FC United who will be making their way over to the continent in a bid to win more friends with their independent spirit of adventure.
The Unibond League Rebels have been invited to take part in the centenary celebrations of German club, FC St Pauli.
The Hamburg-based club are on the brink of promotion to the Bundesliga, the top level of German football.
It will be a major milestone for the German club, who like the Red Rebels are a community-based club.
Advantage
The match between FC and a St Pauli All-Star team will take place on May 15 at the 22,600 capacity Millerntor Stadium - right in the heart of Hamburg's dockside district famous for its ladies of the night.
With just two matches to go in the 2009-10 season, St Pauli are in second place in the German second division.
They have a three-point advantage over their closest challengers for automatic promotion, FC Augsburg, and a vastly superior goal difference.
St Pauli, who won 6-1 in last weekend's match against Koblenz, can secure promotion to the Bundesliga with a win away at Greuther Fuerth.
That will be a relief to Andreas Kahrs, St Pauli's centenary co-ordinator, as finishing third in the league would mean the club has to participate in a play-off for a place in the top division, against the team that finishes third-bottom in the Bundesliga.
The play-off matches have been scheduled for mid-May - meaning St Pauli's anniversary fixtures would have to be re-arranged.
Andreas invited the Rebels because, he says: "Both clubs are all about their fans."
Andreas takes pride in explaining that no major decisions are taken at the German club without discussions and agreement among members.
The St Pauli fans played an important role in saving the club from financial ruin after a crisis broke in 2003.
The club went into freefall after just one season in the Bundesliga (2001-02) and spent four seasons in the third tier of German football.
Immigrants
The fans' "Save St Pauli" campaign ensured that the club survived to see its centenary year.
Andreas also emphasises that his club prides itself on its tolerance and openness to supporters from minority groups. The dockside district was one of the first places in Germany to attract large numbers of immigrants.
And although the St Pauli club colours are brown and white, many fans wear the skull and crossbones symbol that first flew on flags in the Millerntor Stadium in the 1980s.
At that point, says Andreas, football in Germany was tainted by the presence of right-wing extremists but such fans were driven away from the terraces of St Pauli.
Perhaps surprisingly to people in this country unfamiliar with the name, St Pauli can now claim one of the largest support bases in Germany and is the fifth most successfully merchandised club in the country.
FC United will run out on to the pitch to the strains of St Pauli's unofficial anthem, AC/DC's Hell's Bells.
Three days later, St Pauli will continue their celebrations with a match against Celtic.
FC United board member Alison Watt is delighted that the Rebels will play their part in the German club's celebrations.
"To be invited to take part in such a special occasion is undoubtedly a great honour and achievement for our club," she said.
"We hope that the fixture will provide a memorable trip for our supporters who can make the journey and we know that it will be a fantastic experience for our players, an opportunity that most non-league footballers will never get the chance to take part in."

Chester FC: City Fans United Junior Blues members fly flag for ‘Chester FC’
Source: Chester Chronicle
Apr 29 2010
NEARLY 100 Blues supporters flew the flag for their new ‘Chester Football Club’ at FC United of Manchester’s Youth United Day on Saturday.
The City Fans United members, including 30 Junior Blues, were given a warm welcome by the 3,000-crowd at Bury’s Gigg Lane and wished luck in their quest to beat the Danes and gain the lease at the vacant Deva Stadium.
Proud parent Phil Spencer, of Elton, said: “It was very emotional, especially at the end of the game when the FC United fans stopped celebrating their own win to chant ‘Chester, Chester’.”
CFU community officer Mark Howell added: “The fantastic, family-friendly atmosphere would be something that we will be trying extremely hard to emulate should we be granted our wishes by the council.
“It was touching to see the reaction of other supporters to our children – the real spirit of football was there for everyone to see.”
CFU members are reminded that the group’s April meeting takes places at the Home Guard Club, Canal Street, Chester, tonight (8pm).
