NINE-MAN Marine fell to opening day defeat at home to FC United of Manchester.
Yesterday afternoon’s first match of the season at the Arriva Stadium saw the rebel side emerge 2-0 victors with both goals coming from hot shot Michael Norton (15 pen and 54) with the Mariners’ misery compounded with two dismissals.
Striker Thomas Moore saw red just after the hour and on his competitive debut for the club Kevin Leadbetter picked up two cautions to be sent off in the 72nd minute.
Cammell Laird stormed to opening day victory by thumping Radcliffe Borough.
Paul Wheeler’s goal five minutes before the break set the Kirklands side on their way to a 4-0 win with goals from Anthony Lipson (46), John Corrigan (52) and Shaun Tuck (82) completing the Evo-Stik First Division North rout.
Skelmersdale United handed manager Tommy Lawson the winning start he craved with a 2-1 victory over Wakefield. Karl O’Donnell popped up with just three minutes left to make it 2-1 to the West Lancashire side. Marc Roberts stunned the Skem faithful with a fifth minute opener but Chris Almond levelled with a penalty (25) before O’Donnell’s dramatic winner.
Warrington Town also required a goal deep into the second half to secure a first day three points against Ossett Albion.
Shane Kelsey had given the Yorkshire hosts the lead after 18 but Tony Evans replied six minute later before the experienced Gavin Salmon won it for Joey Dunn’s men in the 83rd minute. Elsewhere in the First Division North, Prescot Cables drew 0-0 at Harrogate Railway Athletic.
Burscough fell to opening weekend defeat in the Evo-Stik Premier Division as Lee Steele bagged the only goal to hand Ashton United the win.
Tuesday night’s fixtures: Burscough v Matlock Town, Chasetown v Marine, Prescot Cables v Salford City, Radcliffe Borough v Skelmersdale United, Warrington Town v Chester FC - all game kick-off at 7.45pm.

Mariners sinking fast following ninth straight loss

IN FRONT of a record crowd and a ferocious atmosphere, FC United of Manchester inflicted a ninth straight defeat on Marine.
The Mariners have slipped to 13th place in the UniBond Premier Division following the defeat but will have taken heart from their first-half display in front of 1,146 fans.
Four goals in 11 manic minutes were befitting of the occasion with Simon Carden profiting from sloppy defending to open the scoring on 33 minutes.
Two minutes later and Marine rallied, Peter Cumiskey slid in Karl O’Donnell’s low cross before Wayne McDermott lashed a volley into the top corner a minute later to put the Crosby side 2-1 up.
However a minute before half-time, Carl Lomax bundled his way through on the home goal before firing past Sean Lake to make it 2-2.
The second half was less dramatic as FC United took control of proceedings and just past the hour Lomax was on hand to net his second and seal the win.

Marine sunk by late strike

FC UNITED struck two minutes from time to break the heart of a resilient Marine side in this hostile UniBond Premier Division encounter.
Marine striker Peter Cumiskey had twice dragged his side level and following his second goal of the afternoon on 52 minutes, when he stroked home Tim Bigland's cross, the Crosby outfit were in control.
However, United substitute Nick Robinson popped up unmarked in the area on 88 minutes to fire past Sean Lake and make it 3-2 to the delight of many among the 2,122 attendance.
United had taken an early lead when Tommy Turner tapped in on 19 minutes, but Cumiskey won and then converted a penalty on 34 minutes.
Unfortunately, within a minute of the equaliser FC United had re-established their lead when Chris Baguley scored from close range.
Marine now drop to fourth in the league table and their afternoon was soured further when full-back Freddie Potter was taken to hospital with a serious ankle injury.

Skelmersdale’s fighting spirit not enough

SKELMERSDALE missed out on promotion in heart-breaking fashion in front of a 3,258 crowd at Gigg Lane despite taking an early lead in their UniBond Division One North play-off final.
The scoreline of 4-1 gives the impression there was a huge gulf between the sides, but when Skem were competing with 11 men they more than matched their rivals.
Georgie Donnelly was brought down in the 10th minute following a surging run and from 25 yards out Sean McConville planted his free-kick into the top right-hand corner of the net.
FC United of Manchester began their comeback just before half-time when Jerome Wright’s header was goalward bound, but Michael White instinctively raised his arm to divert the ball off target.
The referee had no alternative but to send him off and Nicky Platt duly dispatched the spot-kick to level the game.
In the 48th minute Anthony Murt rounded the keeper but was forced into shooting from an acute angle. The shot was cleared for a corner which was taken short to McConville – he in turn dribbled the ball across the 18-yard box before unleashing a shot which had to be cleared off the line.
Against the run of play at that particular stage FC United scored their second goal when Dave Chadwick headed home Jamie Baguley’s free-kick at the far post.
In the 61st minute FC United were awarded a penalty when Michael Duffy was judged to have handled the ball. It was a harsh decision. Duffy had blocked the initial danger with his thigh as he was falling to the ground only to see the ball fall to his arm as he tried to redeem himself.
Platt’s spot-kick thundered off the crossbar, but just as it looked as though Skem were off the hook, the referee awarded another penalty for an off-the-ball incident.
This time Rory Patterson took the kick and although Ryan McMahon managed to take the sting out of the shot, the momentum managed to carry the ball over the line.
Kevin Leadbetter took to the field as United went for a ‘nothing to lose’ all-out attack. He managed all of four minutes before he was controversially sent off for foul and abusive language, and with Skem forced to see out the game with just nine men, they didn’t stand a chance of staging a revival.
Substitute Chris Baguley completed the scoring in the 79th minute with a low drive into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

United falling

A LETHARGIC looking Skem slipped to their second defeat of the week and dropped into second place in the UniBond League Division One North.
FC United took the lead against the run of play in the 16th minute when Rory Patterson’s 25-yard free kick sneaked in between the keeper and the post.
Skem started the second half brightly and came close to restoring parity in the 58th minute when Georgie Donnelly sneaked through courtesy of Aaron Turner’s through ball, but the keeper pulled off a top drawer save, and Akrigg’s shot was cleared off the line from the resultant corner.
Patterson scored his second in the 63rd minute; having received a long ball from a free kick deep inside FC United’s half, he shook off Steve Akrigg before slotting the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
Skem tried their best to get back into the game, but were inevitably caught out at the back when Nick Robinson skipped around last man Shaun Foster before sending a low shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net; hence giving FC United a flattering scoreline.
