FC United of Manchester 1, Bradford Park Avenue 5
Bradford Park Avenue pulled clear of second-placed Guiseley at the top of the UniBond League Premier Division with a comprehensive victory over FC United of Manchester at Bury FC’s Gigg Lane tonight.
The race for the title heated up significantly last night when Guiseley drew level on points with their neighbours and rivals thanks to a good win at Stocksbridge PS.
Avenue proved that whatever the Lions could do they could do better as they beat United with a five-star display.
It was far from straightforward for Avenue but they led 2-0 at the interval, somewhat against the run of play.
Skipper Simon Baldry headed them into the lead in the 33rd minute, converting a Martin Drury corner.
Drury was also credited with the assist for the second when his free-kick just over a minute before the break was met with an equally powerful header by Mark Hume.
FC United started the second half as well as they started the game, and this time they had more success as they reduced the arrears in the 48th minute.
A shot from striker Phil Marsh embarrassed Avenue keeper Steve Dickinson as it squirmed under him.
The contest was alive and, while Avenue hit a post through a Drury free-kick, the home side also struck the woodwork following a testing cross just before the hour.
Dickinson was also instrumental in keeping the visitors in front with some fine saves.
Avenue came back to hit a purple patch which saw them to a fine win.
Hume had a shot blocked following a Stephen Downes corner but headed in the rebound, and he completed his hat-trick when he tucked the ball home at the far post from an Aiden Savory cross.
Savory netted the fifth himself following a good move involving Jamie Price and Matty James.
United ended with ten men because Ben Deegan was sent off, for the first time this season, when he picked up a second yellow card.
It was not to be the home side’s evening because they also missed a last-minute penalty, Marsh firing wide after Downes had committed a foul in the area.

Cantona sideshow for play-off battle

There promises to be a carnival atmosphere at tomorrow’s clash between FC United of Manchester and Bradford Park Avenue – despite the pressure that is on both clubs.
It is the last round of fixtures in the regular UniBond League Premier Division season and whoever wins this game is likely to be involved in the play-offs for a place in the Blue Square North.
Avenue have encouraged their supporters to turn out in replica kits as a green and white army and even reduced the price of their shirts so more fans could join in.
The home side are well supported and regularly pull in crowds in excess of 2,000.
Tomorrow at Bury’s Gigg Lane, which is FC United’s rented home, the makers of a film due to be released in June are distributing thousands of Eric Cantona masks to fans.
The crowd scenes are to be filmed and may be used by Icon Films as promotion material in their ‘Looking for Eric’ production.
Avenue and FC United, the club born out of disquiet by so-called real fans of the Old Trafford giants of a similar name, were divisional rivals last season. Avenue came up as champions and FC United via the play-offs.
They cannot both go up this year as only one team from the four in the play-offs can gain promotion. However, they could be rivals for a third season on the trot next term if both were pipped to promotion by any of four other clubs still in with a shout as the battle has gone right to the wire.
Meanwhile, Avenue’s La Liga Soccer Centre will be hosting a tournament during the summer featuring some famous names after they confirmed a visit by the Liverpool Legends.
Mark Wright, Neil Ruddock, Alan Kennedy, Bruce Grobbelaar, Jan Molby and John Aldridge are due to appear in a five-a-side squad that will play against a team who have qualified for the privilege of facing them.
Avenue owner Bob Blackburn said: “We are delighted to finally get the Legends here, as we have worked hard on it for a long while.
“There was a suggestion that our first team would play against them as a pre-season friendly way back last July. Unfortunately, because of possible dates and availability, that didn’t happen.
“Now they are coming for a different event but they are coming. Everything is signed and sealed.
“I think this is yet another indication of Bradford Park Avenue’s pulling power. It’s a coup for us and the city,”
Thackley In his first season with Thackley, and despite missing several games through injury, striker Chris Coy has set a new scoring record for the Dennyfield outfit.
Coy began his career in the youth ranks at Sheffield Wednesday and has attracted interest from clubs higher up the pyramid system since Reds boss Billy Fox brought him in at the start of the season.
Club secretary and press officer Chris Frank said: “He has 33 league goals for the season, before tomorrow’s short journey to Eccleshill United, and I have checked the records and that is the best for us at this level.
“We have been in this division for 26 years, since its inception in 1982. In fact, we are the only ever-present club in that period of time.
“When Chris scored a hat-trick in the 7-2 win at Nostell on Easter Saturday, he equalled the club record.
“When he scored the winner in the 2-1 victory at home to Bridlington Town last weekend, he set a new total. That goal took him past Stuart Taylor’s 32 league goals in the 1994-95 season.”
Taylor went on to play for Accrington Stanley and later joined a very elite group – along with former England international and Huddersfield Town legend Frank Worthington – by scoring a hat-trick on his Guiseley debut.
Coy has so far spurned attention from UniBond League and Blue Square North clubs and Thackley have had the foresight to place him on contract, so there would be some compensation were he to move on before the club do.

Entertaining stalemate for Avenue

The tension is mounting in the race to be crowned UniBond Division One North champions and Avenue stay third, despite picking up a point from tonight's goalless draw with FC United of Manchester.
It was a thoroughly entertaining game, although there were signs that the players of both sides were jaded.
The two clubs have more of a fixture backlog than leaders Curzon Ashton and second-placed Skelmersdale United.
A crowd of 1,262 enjoyed the contest, the numbers being swelled by the travelling fans of the well- supported FC United.
The visitors had more to cheer in the first half. Jerome White shot over early on, and midway through the half Avenue centre back Mark Hotte gave keeper Jon Worsnop a scare with a weak back- pass.
It was, however, a game in which good chances were very much at a premium and the sides were quite evenly matched.
Avenue did most of the pressing in the second half as they sought a winner.
Just before the hour, a Mark Bett shot from 20 yards flew just wide.
Avenue did come agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 68th minute.
Gareth Morris, starting in midfield in the absence of injured skipper Steve Connors, worked his way behind United's defence but his cut-back was inches behind the on-rushing Tristram Whitman with the visitors' keeper out of position.

All-ticket for Trophy tie

Bradford Park Avenue have taken advice from various sources and decided to make their FA Trophy tie against FC United of Manchester at Horsfall Stadium on October 6 an all-ticket game.
It will be the first meeting of the clubs, FC United having been founded by disgruntled Manchester United supporters following the takeover at Old Trafford of the Glazer family.
They rocketed up the lower steps of the non-league ladder, aided by healthy finances due to massive support, and will face Avenue home and away in UniBond Division One North this season.
Tickets for the Trophy tie, priced at £7.50 adults, £4 seniors and students and £3 under-16s, are available online, from the club shop and on the day of the game from 10am but there will be no admission through the turnstiles by cash.
