Marine FC Youth title after breaching player regulations

 Source: Crosby Herald

MARINE Football Club’s youth team have missed out on becoming champions of the North West Youth Alliance League after being deducted points.

The club has confirmed that the youth team have been deducted 12 points in relation to breaches of discipline following disciplinary hearings that have taken place at the Liverpool County FA.

Officials at the club expressed their disappointment at the ruling, which means Marine Youth FC have now finished third in the league.

Six points have been deducted for fielding an ineligible player on two occasions and a further six points have therefore been forfeited for the points gained in those two games.

A further three point deduction has been made for the breach being on two occasions.

As a consequence of the 15 points deduction the youth team have finished in third place in the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division, organisers of which yesterday confirmed FC United of Manchester as champions and Altrincham as runners-up.

The youth side had enjoyed an incredible season, finishing top after a string of impressive displays.

Marine FC’s youth team chairman Colin Begbie expressed his disappointment at the deduction, particularly as many of the players will be too old to play for the team next season.

He said: “As far as I am aware it was an accidental breach.

“It’s unfortunate and these things happen but at the end of the day they’ve been found out and that’s it.

“They have broken the rules and have got to abide by them.

“It’s just disappointing and disappointing for the lads.

“I am sure a few of them of gutted.

“We have just got to move on and do it again next year.”

It is believed the incident concerned a player sent of in a cup match at Bradford last year playing before his suspension had run out.

Marine FC’s youth team had finished four points clear at the top of the league, with FC United of Manchester behind them and Altrincham in third.

Now the side have slipped to third in the league.

Within hours of the news breaking messages on the club website revealed disappointment over the deduction, with one fan posting: “Very disappointed to hear this news.

“You've got to say, the lads are going to be gutted now that all that hard work and effort they've put in is going to count for nothing.

“From first place to third place, I really am heartbroken for everyone in the Youth Team.”

Marine Youth clinch championship advantage after double header with FC United ...

 Source: Crosby Herald

MARINE Youth took a vital step towards clinching the North West Youth Association title with a double header against closest rivals FC United of Manchester, writes Colin Begbie.

Marine Youth 2 – 0 FCUM Youth

A bright but cold evening at the Arriva Stadium saw a pulsating encounter which played a big part in deciding the title.

Early action was largely in midfield as the two table topping sides battled for control. Although FCUM caused the Marine defence some problems, they were unable to capitalise and it was largely due to some wayward Marine shooting the first half ended goalless with Jack Flynn and Billy Smart proving difficult to handle. The former brought a smart save from the FCUM keeper.

Marine had a claim for a penalty turned down as the ball made contact with a defender’s arm. The linesman signalled the offence was just outside the area, but the free kick flew just wide of the keeper’s left hand post.

The second half started evenly but it was Marine who found their shooting boots. After having a goal disallowed Jack Flynn fired home to break the deadlock on the hour. The second came in the 81st minute when Jack McCluskie intercepted a ball around half way. His pass to substitute striker Paul Pruden left the defence stranded and Pruden went on to fire in top corner.

Despite some frayed tempers near the end, Marine held out for a great victory.

FCUM Youth 3 – 3 Marine Youth

The second part of this top of the table double header served up a game with everything.

FCUM raced to a 2-0 half time lead having played some good football in the process. Not to be outdone, Marine showed why they are worthy favourites for the title with a three goal burst to put them ahead.

Kevin Farrell was unchallenged as he headed a free kick home and five minutes later Matty Devine punished some hesitant defending to equalise. Paul Pruden then found space at the far post to tap home Marine’s third.

FCUM then regained the momentum with an 80th minute equaliser to set up a tense finish but Marine held out well with the only blemish the late dismissal of Billy Smart.

Marine now need four points from the remaining three games to secure the title.

Marine’s play-off hopes dealt a blow as FC United of Manchester win 2-1 at packed-out Arriva Stadium

 Source: Crosby Herald

MARINE’S quest to book a play-off berth in the Evo-Stik League’s Northern Premier Division was dealt a blow last Saturday as great rivals FC United of Manchester came from a goal down to grab all three points with a late winner.

It had all started so well for the Mariners at a packed-out Arriva Stadium – some 1,111 fans on hand for the clash.

The hosts gradually took charge of the first-half with a confident display.

The breakthrough came after 27 minutes when Marine’s Robbie Lawton flighted a free-kick from near the halfway line finding Jonathan Goulding with time and space to deftly control the ball before lashing home beyond the defenceless keeper James Spencer.

After 40 minutes, United skipper Kyle Jacobs overlapped again down the right before crossing to Adam Jones whose header went narrowly wide.

This combination would ultimately cause Marine’s downfall.

Marine’s central defenders, John Shaw and Sam Barnes, were so dominant in the first-half that despite FC United’s attractive passing game, their attacks carried as much bite as a spinach-less Popeye without his dentures.

The heavy reliance on the talented Carlos Roca to take all corners and free-kicks was proving ineffective whereas Marine seemed more fluent and created better chances.

However, this was all to change in the second-half.

United improved their service to striker Mike Norton and in the 53rd minute, immediately after a penalty appeal was denied, Norton picked himself up to deliver a deliciously-weighted, defence-splitting pass to Matthew Wolfenden who stroked the ball home with aplomb.

The goal galvanised United and forced Marine into a more defensive approach. Norton fired over from the edge of the area before Goulding responded for Marine with a volley from Ian Latham’s cross.

On 68 minutes United came close as Jake Cottrell and ex-Mariner Stephen Johnson combined well down the left forcing a corner which was subsequently cleared off the line by substitute Liam Dawson.

Marine keeper Callum Williams had a momentary lapse of concentration when he came out to punch a floated free-kick but found his penalty area more crowded than the London Underground during peak – the danger ultimately being cleared.

Barely a minute from time when it seemed both teams would happily settle for a point apiece, a Jacobs free-kick from the right found the unmarked Adam Jones who headed home from close range to seal a hard-earned win for the visitors.

Marine: Callum Williams, Joe Fowler, Louis Barnes, John Shaw, Sam Barnes, Robbie Lawton, Paul Brown (Paul Lundon 65), Jonathan Goulding, Aaron Rey (Thomas Moore 82), Neil Harvey, Ian Latham (Liam Dawson 65). Subs (unused) Darren Byers, Liam Duff

‘We are not playing Manchester United’ warns Marine FC boss Kevin Lynch

 Source: Crosby Herald

KEVIN LYNCH admits Marine are still searching for a win over FC United of Manchester because they have built the rivalry into something it is not.

The Mariners boss says their downfall against The Rebels has often been in believing the match has to assume similar bitterness to that of Manchester United against Liverpool.

In seven attempts since FC United were promoted into Step Three of the non-league system, Marine have failed to pick up a victory and on many occasions the games have been ill-tempered affairs, both on and off the pitch.

Each time Lynch has led Marine into a match with the Gigg Lane outfit, he has called for cool heads in the heat of battle but this time he felt the need to remind his players they are facing FC United and not the Premier League club from which they broke away.

The manager is excited about Saturday's game at the Arriva Stadium but more for it being a clash of promotion challengers rather than Scousers against Mancunians.

“We haven't beat them yet but there has got to be a first time and hopefully that can be Saturday," said Lynch.

"I think we used to believe we were playing Man United and when you do that and have that mindset, you are already two goals down.

"We have to remember that FC United are just a team in our league that are challenging for honours like we are.

"Certainly the last few times we've played them have been draws which hopefully shows we are getting to grips with the fixture and realising that it's just another game.

"Recently I have seen us play in front of the big crowds and relish the challenge.

"I'm expecting a good football game with two teams that will certainly play the right way.

"There is huge interest in terms of fan base and should be a good advert for the league.

"You will also see both teams looking to win the game because we are both attack minded. I'm looking forward to the game and no player needs any extra motivation because of the sort of game it is.

"But it is not because of the rivalry which exists between Manchester United and either Liverpool or Everton. It is because of where we both are in the league."

Sixth placed Marine hold a five point advantage over FC United in the Evo-Stik Premier Division standings following last weekend's round of results.

As the Manchester side required a last minute equaliser at home to Frickley Athletic, the Whites picked up a point at high-flying Hednesford Town.

Lynch left Keys Park knowing his side had opportunities to win the game but was nevertheless happy to have taken four points from the Staffordshire side this season.

“On paper and everything else, it is a good point," he said.

"To get four points over the course of the season leaves me pretty satisfied although we had the better chances on Saturday.

"But if you had given me a point before the game then I would've taken it."

Marine denied a win once again against FC United of Manchester

 Source: Crosby Herald

MARINE extended their unbeaten league run to five matches with a draw at Bower Fold on Saturday, the game ending 1-1 with hosts FC United of Manchester.

The Crosby side have yet to record a victory over the Mancunians in seven attempts but probably should have broken their duck this time, having the better of the scoring chances on a damp afternoon at Stalyvegas.

Referee David Storrie had a busy afternoon, showing yellow cards no fewer than 11 times in what was a full blooded but generally fairly fought encounter, FC’s Ben Deegan seeing two of them to depart the fray amid much controversy.

The home side threatened with a free-kick which rebounded off Ryan McMahon in the Marine goal, Matthew Wolfenden sending the ball back in with the visitors’ defence managing to clear the danger.

Aaron Rey went on a good run down the left, cutting in before firing an angled drive which brought a fine stop from James Spencer to push the ball away.

The Mariners took the lead after 37 minutes with a smart finish from Stephen Johnson, the winger, pacy and direct throughout, pouncing on Dean Stott’s error to finish clinically with a crisp shot inside the near post from 15 yards.

The start of the second-half saw the Mariners have a great chance to double their lead, Andy Fowler driving in to the box with Johnson crossing, Rey blazing over the top from six yards .

It was a pivotal miss at a crucial point of the game.

The home side levelled proceedings just before the hour mark, a free-kick from the right being met by a stooping header from Wolfenden to steer the ball inside the far post.

Deegan collected the first of his yellow cards when sliding in on McMahon as the keeper came out to collect, cueing a flare up involving players from both sides.

Marine possibly had some good fortune late on when Deegan appeared to be tripped in the box, the Joe Jordan-esque forward instead seeing a second yellow card for simulation in modern parlance – in old money a dive – with opinion split amongst observers as to the merits of the decision.

A penalty and probable winning goal would have been harsh on the Mariners though, as they moved within a point of the play-off positions.

FC United of Manchester: James Spencer, Kyle Jacobs, Lee Neville, Jake Cottrell, Adam Jones, Dean Stott, Carlos Roca, Nicky Platt (Daniel Grimshaw 90), Ben Deegan, Matthew Wolfenden (Theo Kidd 90), Michael Carr (Richard Battersby 90). Unused subs: David Chadwick, Adam Edwards.

Marine FC players can’t wait for FC United of Manchester

Source: Crosby Herald

Jul 15 2010 by Philip Kirkbride, Crosby Herald

MARINE manager Kevin Lynch says his players can’t wait for the opening day of the season.

The Evo-Stik Premier Division fixtures have thrown up a mouth-watering clash on the first weekend of the new campaign as the Mariners welcome FC United of Manchester.

Lynch revealed several of the Whites’ squad were phoning him straight after the announcement yesterday, already desperate for Saturday, August 21 to be here.

Arriva Stadium boss Lynch is now hoping to channel that excitement from his players into their first pre-season match against Tranmere Rovers next Tuesday and has challenged the squad to force their way into the starting 11 for the visit of FC United.

“It is a nice, juicy opening game of the season isn’t it?” said Lynch.

“We are all really looking forward to it and I’ve already had players texting and phoning about the first game.

“All the lads can’t wait to get going and the early fixtures we have been handed are pretty pleasing. Places that are perhaps not the nicest to go to in mid-winter and can be bleak, we get out of the way early on. But for now the lads have seven games in this pre-season period to convince me their name should be in the starting 11 for the FC United match.”

Lynch also agrees the visit of the Manchester rebel side in just over five weeks time could provide Marine with the perfect start to a season which promises much.

When FC visited Crosby in April last season, 1,093 fans watched an enthralling 1-1 draw but Lynch is hoping to attract a bigger crowd and gain a better result.

“Certainly, this could potentially be the best possible way to start the new season. There is certainly great interest in the players we’ve signed and the hopes we have for next season. Getting a bigger crowd than we did last time would be a major plus and hopefully we can play some decent football and get a positive result.”

Lynch says he will be in dialogue with Tranmere Rovers this week ahead of the pre-season friendly with the Prenton Park outfit.

The manager wants to give game time to all 22 members of his squad but if Les Parry’s League One side want to restrict the game to just five substitutes then Lynch will respect the decision.

“I would like to play all the lads at some point on Tuesday night; in reality have two teams. But I don’t want to disrespect Tranmere and if they just want to limit it to five subs then that will be fine. I’ll speak to them in the next few days.”

Marine 1-1 FC United

Source: Crosby Herald

Apr 8 2010 by Our Correspondent, Crosby Herald

A SCRAMBLED goal from Liam Rushton deep into stoppage time rescued a deserved point for Marine in a tense encounter at the Arriva Stadium.

Marine were looking to extend their unbeaten to ten matches in front of a bumper Bank Holiday crowd but this was a poor performance from Kevin Lynch’s men who failed to raise their game against the self appointed rebels of Manchester United.

Lynch was careful not to make excuses after their game but agreed that his side may have been a little overawed by both the occasion and hostile United fans.

He said: “We are a young team but you should never get stage fright if you want to be a footballer. It’s why you play the game, to play football in occasions like this and you should want to play at a higher level. Sometimes you’ve just got to grow a pair of you-know-what’s and today I thought we were a bit caught in the headlights.”

Both teams struggled with awful conditions throughout the opening as torrential rain swept across the pitch, but it was United who settled the better, as they slowly took control of the game with their patient and attractive football.

Sadly the same admiration could not extend to United’s fans and amid some unsavory chanting from both sets of supporters, police and stewards were forced to eject a number of people from the ground

It took until the last minute of the half for their possession to pay off when a deep corner from Carlos Roca saw a far post header from captain, David Chadwick cross the line after a fumble from keeper, Tim Dittmer and a poor attempted clearance from the defender on the line.

The second half saw Marine improve but chances for Jonathan Goulding and Thomas Moore came and went while Roca went close with a fine curling effort for United.

The team in red, who were set up by fans disenchanted with the Old Trafford side’s takeover by the American Glazer family, were satisfied with looking for the breakaway goal, content to play one up front and leaving the superb Cypriot, Angelos Tsiaklis to control midfield.

Marine though are made of strong stuff as their recent record of late goals has shown and with ten minutes remaining, the Whites’ pressure was incessant, Moore wasting their best chance after rounding the keeper, his goal bound effort cleared off the line by defender James Holden.

Steve Hussey was next to go close, his right footed placement prompting a fine finger tip save from the flying Sam Ashton. From the resultant corner Moore headed back across goal to Rainford who stumbled over the ball from five yards. Two further corners saw headers scrambled away by the United defence.

With only minutes on the clock, United paid the price for their time wasting tactics as the referee added extra time on following some painfully slow substitutions.

A minimum of three minutes injury time turned into five, and the Marine goal finally came when a long range shot was turned in from close range by teenager Liam Rushton, ensuring the points were shared.

Marine: Tim Dittmer, Shaun Callacher, Ian Latham (Liam Rushton), Michael Jackson ©, John Shaw, Steven Hussey, Jamie Rainford, Joe Fowler (Jonathan Goulding), Thomas Moore, Lloyd Ellams (Stephen Brown), Sean Doherty.

Subs not used; Joe McMahon, Peter Cumiskey.

FC United of Manchester: Sam Ashton, James Holden, Ludovic Quistin, Angelos Tsiaklis, David Chadwick ©, Nick Swirad, Chris Ovington (Gage Eme), Cedric Krou, Phil Marsh, Jerome Wright (Ben Morris), Carlos Roca (Joe Yoffe).

Subs not used; Jamie Mack, Mark Ayres.

Marine FC boss urges players to keep calm heads

Source: Crosby Herald

Apr 1 2010 by Philip Kirkbride

‘KEEP YOUR COOL’ is the message from boss Kevin Lynch ahead of Marine’s clash with FC United of Manchester tomorrow.

Unbeaten in nine matches, the Mariners welcome the breakaway Manchester club to the Arriva Stadium in a fixture last season which attracted over 1400 supporters.

Manager Lynch is urging his in-form players to resist letting their Merseyside pride take over in a battle against the Mancunian outfit and instead repeat the “professional” approach seen in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Whitby Town.

Marine were scheduled to face second bottom Ossett Town on Tuesday night but a waterlogged pitch put paid to the fixture and now rescheduled for Wednesday, the Whites face a jam-packed week ahead.

Lynch said: “People see this match as Liverpool versus Manchester United but it is not and the lads have got to get any notion of this out of their minds. We are just playing a normal team and if you go into the game thinking about this rivalry then you are already beaten; it is just 11 versus 11.

FC United have found this level hard after coming up from the First Division talking about winning the league and the going on to the Conference North and then National. But the best teams in this league have been around for some time and we are finding that out for ourselves.

“We have a clean bill of health and everyone wants to play in the FC match but obviously I can only pick a 16 man squad. It is leaving me with selection headache.

Take nothing away from FC, they are a good footballing side but they are beatable and give you chances.

“These games are great occasions and have really good atmospheres, the type everyone wants to play in.

“You want to showcase your talents in front of a big stage.

“I thought the Whitby Town performance was a professional one. They came to spoil the game and rough us up but the lads didn’t rise to it. Earlier in the season this was the type of match where we would have had someone sent off but they just got on with the job and scored two excellent goals. They deservedly had a man sent off.”

Lynch expressed concerns the Arriva Stadium pitch, currently waterlogged, may not be passed fit for Friday’s match and said the club were exploring the possibility of playing the game on Saturday.

But at the time of going to press the game was still going ahead tomorrow.

Wrong end in thriller

Wrong end in thriller

THE scoreline would not have been to their liking but the occasion of Saturday afternoon’s match with FC United of Manchester will have everyone at Marine dreaming.

In front of 1146 fans, this UniBond Premier Division clash was atmospheric, enthralling and had the feel of a game with so much more a stake.

The Mariners would love to be able to attract the level of home support that celebrated Wayne McDermott’s spectacular volley to send Marine 2-1 ahead each week and would have much preferred the weekend’s match to have been a pivotal to both sides’ play-off chances.

However, the 3-2 loss signalled the Whites’ eighth straight league defeat and now sees them in 13th place - though relegation is highly unlikely, three points sooner rather than later will calm any lingering nerves.

Indeed the much needed win could have arrived against FC United following a stirring first-half attacking display from Alvin McDonald’s men that saw them rally after going behind in the 33rd minute.

Simon Carden pounced on hesitant defending in the home area to steal in and fire past Sean Lake for an unlikely lead.

Marine had made all the early progress with Karl O’Donnell, re-born as a right winger, the source of all that was good about the Mariners in the opening 45.

O’Donnell’s deep cross was almost turned in acrobatically by Joe Doyle at the back post before the former Vauxhall Motors man struck the cross bar with a dipping free-kick.

But, two minutes after conceding, Marine levelled when O’Donnell’s teasing low cross was bundled over the line by Peter Cumiskey and a minute later they stole the lead.

Full-back Wayne McDermott was played into the area before unleashing a vicious volley into the top corner.

Unfortunately the Mariners’ cheer was short lived as just before the break, Carl Lomax barged his way through the backline to steer the ball past Lake - Marine were incensed that the striker was not penalised for a pull back on McDermott.

The goal knocked the fight out of Marine and the second half belonged to the visitors who took control of the game.

Lomax was on hand at the back post just after he hour to prod home and make it 3-2.

Man of the match: Karl O’Donnell

Marine 2-3 FC United of Manchester - match report

Mar 28 2009 By Phil Kirkbride at the Arriva Stadium

FC United of Manchester edged out Marine in a thrilling encounter at the Arriva Stadium this afternoon.

After a manic first 45 minutes the scores were level at 2-2 but after the break United exerted more control on the game and grabbed the vital third goal just after the hour when Carl Lomax slotted in at the back post.

Marine's UniBond Premier Division woes continue with this defeat but manager Alvin McDonald will continue to take heart from what was a opening half display full of spirit and real quality at times.

However FC United's third goal provided a real hammer blow for the Whites, stunting their momentum gathered from a first half befiiting the hyped occassion.

Marine immediately fed off the electric atmosphere inside the Arriva Stadium with a purposeful start to the match.

Bouyed on by a large vocal support, the Mariners were soon causing FC United of Manchester trouble at the back and with a rejuvinated Karl O'Donnell on the right wing making inroads, the Whites looked threatening.

However, Marine's defensive frailties came back to haunt them on 33 minutes when Adam Farley failed to deal with a routine cross into the box and allowed Simon Carden to steal in at the front post - it kicked off a dramatic final 15 minutes of the half.

Two minutes after going behind, Marine responded when Peter Cumiskey slid in the turn O'Donnell's teasing cross past Sam Ashton.

A minute later, full-back Wayne McDermott piled forward down the left and unleashed a terriffic volley into the top corner to make it 2-1 to send the home faithful into raptures.

Unfortunately, Marine could not hold onto the lead as a minute before the break Carl Lomax powered his way through on goal and fired past Lake, desptie protest for a foul on McDermott.

On 61 minutes Carlos Roca's chip to the back post was not dealt with by Marine and Lomax had time to pick his spot.

Marine FC manager Alvin McDonald says his side owes fans

Mar 26 2009 by Philip Kirkbride, Crosby Herald

MARINE manager Alvin McDonald has told the fans - ‘We owe you a win’.

The Mariners have only won twice in the last nine outings at the Arriva Stadium with the boss now demanding an end to the poor run .

McDonald says it is time his side put the Whites’ supporters out of their misery and secure a much needed three points in front of a bumper crowd on Saturday.

FC United of Manchester are the visitors to Crosby this weekend and McDonald is relishing planning his squad’s revival against the play-off contenders following a disappointing trip to Boston last Saturday.

He said: “I am looking forward to Saturday, it will be nice to have a decent sized crowd at the ground and if the band in the corner are making some noise then it should be a great atmosphere. I do not think it will be long before we get a win at home, we owe everyone a win because we have only had one since early December - it is time we repaid the faithful fans.

“We certainly should not have got beat at Boston, we should have come back with something. We made a great start and looked in control, there was no real threat from them, just we could not defend a simple free-kick. At 1-1 they had a little bit of a go for 10 minutes and Sean Lake has made a couple of saves from headers.

“After half-time we were back on top and had chances to go in front but again after another free-kick, which we could not defend, we find ourselves 2-1 down - I am just so disappointed.

“But there has been a turn around in attitude and we did not lose the last game because of a lack of commitment - we are just in a rut and can’t get ourselves out of it.”

Though Marine find themselves on a seven game losing streak, McDonald will be hoping the signing of defender Tony Davies will help stop the rot. Likewise, the emergence of youth products Joe Doyle and Peter McShane to the first team has filled the Mariners’ boss with optimism for the remainder of this season and for the future.

However a player McDonald earmarked for the 2009/10 campaign, Liam Kennedy has rejoined Prescot Cables - a move which disappointed the manager.

He added: “Tony eventually signed from Denby Town for us after we managed to get through the red tape of international clearance. He signed on Friday and got on for the last 25 minutes on Saturday, he is a big, strong lad and will hopefully add something to us.

“I was pleased for Joe getting his first goal on Saturday, he has a great attitude and him and Peter McShane are doing fine at the moment. They do not have much experience but are not letting anyone down.”

Troublemakers warned about Marine FC v Manchester outfit FC United match

Source: Crosby Herald

Mar 26 2009 By Staff Reporter

TROUBLEMAKERS thinking of using the Northern Line train service when Marine FC welcome Manchester outfit FC United this Saturday have been warned.

FCUM have been given 1,000 tickets for the fixture while the home side have 750, and a heavy police presence has been planned for the streets surrounding the Arriva stadium on the day.

No tickets will be on sale on the day itself, while supporters will be segregated.

Inspector Adrian Yorston, of British Transport Police, yesterday told the Herald that the BTP will carry out a ‘fair’ but ‘robust’ operation on the day.

He said: "We are aware that large numbers of FC United fans are likely to travel to the game with Marine this Saturday, March 28.

"The team has a large following in itself, but the number of fans is likely to swell as there are no Premier League matches that weekend.

"We will have officers in attendance at a number of stations in Merseyside, as well as travelling on the trains, to monitor the fans as they make their way to and from the match.

He added: "As always we would urge supporters to be mindful of other passengers on the rail network when travelling to the games, especially on busy transport routes.

"We are hoping for a great day out for people who are attending the football, but we will be on hand to deal swiftly with any troublemakers and as always we hope the day will pass without incident.

"We will deal fairly but robustly with any disorder and will make arrests wherever trouble occurs and in every case where someone is arrested for a football related offence we will be seeking a banning order through the courts.

"Everyone has the right to use public transport in safety and we will do everything possible to ensure that this safety is not compromised because of the poor behaviour of a minority of individuals."

Safety worries for clash with FCMU

Source: Crosby Herald

Mar 5 2009 by Mark Johnson, Crosby Herald

MARINE FC and police officials will today rubber stamp a plan to ensure the safety of the local community as fears grow that football hooligans are heading for Crosby.

The Herald understands 21 police officers, three sergeants and mounted police will be drafted into Crosby on Saturday, March 28, when Marine FC welcome Manchester outfit FC United to the Arriva stadium for the first time in a UniBond Premier League fixture.

Safety fears stem from the previous game at Gigg Lane, Bury, when Liverpool-based Marine players were subject to abuse.

A week after that match, Marine player John Lawless had his contract scrapped for allegedly making an aeroplane motion, which was felt by some to have been an insult referencing the 1958 Munich Air Disaster in which 23 people died.

FC United of Manchester was formed as a breakaway club by fans furious at Manchester United’s takeover by Malcolm Glazer.

The planning meeting takes place this afternoon and will approve the deployment of officers inside the ground, a feature which is not normally seen by fans at the Arriva .

Seven British Transport Police officers will also be manning the Northern Line to monitor behaviour on trains and stations.

There will also be a designated area for coaches at Crosby sports centre, the Herald understands.

Internet message board posters predict Crosby’s streets could be “a battle zone” and say it could be “the game to miss”.

The match is likely to see a bigger crowd because it lands on an international weekend, when Liverpool, Everton and Manchester United will not be playing.

FCUM, who normally take 600 fans, have been allocated 1,000 tickets, and Marine have 750.

Crosby neighbourhood Insp Neil Turner said: “We will ensure the safety of football fans and the local area on the day.”

Marine FC have made their UniBond Premier Division clash with FC United of Manchester an all-ticket affair

Feb 26 2009 Crosby Herald

MARINE have finalised a plan of action to ensure their UniBond Premier Division game with FC United of Manchester passes without incident.

The Mariners’ management have taken the step to make the March 28 game all-ticket and, after consultation with Merseyside Police, are segregating opposing supporters.

The game will be limited to a 1,750 capacity with 1,000 tickets allocated to FC fans.

Fears had grown that crowd violence could erupt inside the Arriva Stadium with tensions running high following the previous meeting between the two sides.

Alleged incidents involving ex-Mariner John Lawless outraged United supporters on December 20 and ultimately led to the 26-year-old leaving the Whites.

The fixture also falls on an international weekend and there will be a police presence.

Marine chairman Paul Leary said: “To enable Marine, in conjunction with the authorities, to provide the appropriate resources for the day the only option available to us was to make the match all-ticket especially after considering that there are no Premiership games on the day. It is important that we are able to look after all supporters attending the game and that we plan accordingly and our ongoing discussions and assistance from the officials of FC United of Manchester, Sefton Council and Merseyside Police will help us to do that.”

FC United general manager Andy Walsh added: “Whilst all-ticket games are not always desirable we understand that they are occasionally necessary from a practical point of view. We are happy that Marine has explored all options for the game to go ahead.”

Tickets for Marine fans will be available before the intervening home games and each evening from 6pm at the club from March 1.

Marine FC v FC United of Manchester to be all-ticket

Source: Crosby Herald

Feb 24 2009 By Phil Kirkbride

MARINE have today laid down plans on how they will minimise the threat of crowd trouble in their match with FC United of Manchester on Saturday, March 28.

The major steps taken by the Mariners, after consultation with Merseyside Police, are to make the game all-ticket and segregate the two sets of supporters.

The Arriva Stadium outfit have confirmed there will be a police presence inside and outside the ground.

Marine have been allocated 750 tickets whilst FC United have been handed 1,000 for the game which falls on an international weekend - no tickets will be on sale the day of the game.

Crosby's Marine FC fear battle zone for FC United of Manchester match

Source: Crosby Herald

Jan 22 2009 by Mark Johnson, Crosby Herald

MARINE FC officials were yesterday meeting with officers from Merseyside Police to discuss ways of preventing Crosby’s streets being turned into “a battle zone” by football hooligans from Manchester.

Their safety fears stem from the next UniBond Premier League game with FC United of Manchester.

Tensions between some fans are running high after a controversial match in Greater Manchester last month.

Following that clash, Marine player John Lawless had his contract terminated for allegedly making an aeroplane motion – felt by some to have been an insult referencing the 1958 Munich Air Disaster in which 23 people died – before taking a corner at the home end.

Footage of the incident has recently appeared on YouTube.

Now police and Marine FC are looking into introducing additional security for when FC United, formed as a breakaway club by fans furious at Manchester United’s takeover by the Glazer family, play the return fixture at College Road on Saturday, March 28.

On Internet message boards, fans are already warning that it could be “the game to miss” after emotions ran high during the December 20 fixture.

During the game, at Gigg Lane, Bury, Liverpool-based footballers sustained a tirade of abuse from the home supporters relating to their backgrounds.

Mr Lawless’s solicitor, Ged Nolan, from firm Canter, Levin & Berg, said the team suffered a “torrent of abuse” with some songs mocking the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster.

The management of the Edinburgh pub on College Road, Crosby, is among local businesses considering closing for the day, as they seek advice from police over whether they would be safer shutting their doors.

The forthcoming game is likely to see a bigger crowd because it lands on the weekend when England play Slovakia, meaning the North West’s top flight teams including Liverpool, Everton and Manchester United won’t be playing.

Mike Smith, assistant manager of the Edinburgh, told the Herald: “We have been warned by a regular that there could be trouble. It’s something we are working on at the moment.

“We will have to have discussions with the police and Marine to get advice.

“We don’t know if we are opening or not. We have been told of the possibility of trouble and some hot heads.

“We have only ever experienced trouble once from fans from one club about four years ago. Other than that the away teams’ fans are brilliant.”

On YouTube one football fan wrote: “I was toying with the idea of going to the return fixture in the New Year, but it sounds like the genteel suburbs of Crosby could be a bit of a battlezone.”

Another member posted: “We've played on Merseyside before with no problems, but this match could be one to give a miss.”

An FC United spokesman told the Herald: “We will take between 500 and 600 fans to the game. We have a brilliant relationship with Marine and what’s happened after the last fixture has been over-played. Our record has been impeccable and there is never any trouble, only the odd incident in Leeds.”

A spokesman for FC United said they “categorically denied” allegations their supporters mocked the Hillsborough Disaster.

John Lawless’ contract with Marine terminated

Source: Crosby Herald

Jan 15 2009 by Philip Kirkbride, Crosby Herald

JOHN Lawless’ contract with Marine was terminated on Tuesday – but the club are keeping tight-lipped as to why he is leaving the Arriva Stadium.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who had hit six goals in 21 games for the Mariners this season, is being investigated by the Football Association for his alleged conduct during his club’s visit to FC United of Manchester on December 20.

Lawless has been accused by FC United fans of taunting the home crowd by mimicking an aeroplane – a gesture believed to be in reference to the Munich air disaster of 1958, when eight Manchester United players were killed.

Another Mariner player, Shaun Tuck, was also accused of making a similar gesture after his side made it 1-1 through Peter Cumiskey’s 34th minute penalty.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed to the Herald that two men were officially warned at half-time of the UniBond Premier Division match at Gigg Lane, with Marine later confirming that Lawless and Tuck had been written to by the FA and had since responded.

Match referee John Corkhill included the alleged incidents in his match report, which prompted the UniBond League to take the matter to the FA.

Marine chairman Paul Leary had issued a statement to the press on Monday, confirming that an investigation was underway. He then updated the club’s stance on Tuesday evening, saying Lawless had left the Mariners.

But officials at Marine declined to expand on a club statement, which read: “Marine FC announces that contracted player John Lawless has today left the club and his contract has been cancelled by agreement of both parties“.

Manager Alvin McDonald did admit that losing a player of Lawless’ stature would be a huge blow.

He said: “From a player-manager point of view, I am really disappointed. He is an excellent player and over the last two months, he has been our best player. John is a match winner, talented and really enjoyed playing for Marine FC. He could have gone to other clubs and earned bigger wages, but he stuck to his word right throughout the summer and signed with us. I am not looking to bring in anyone to replace him. We have got Darren Brookfield and Paul Woolcott, who can play on the right side of midfield. It is one of the strongest positions at the club.”

Meanwhile, Brookfield is a doubt for Marine’s first competitive match of 2009 against Witton Albion on Saturday, after picking up a foot injury in the 4-0 win over Ashton Athletic in Tuesday night’s friendly match.

Though McDonald is hopeful Brookfield can shake off the knock, he is less optimistic about the chances of Joe Fowler, who was forced off with a twisted knee. Tim Bigland is also a doubt through illness.

Peter’s perfect return shattered by United

Dec 22 2008 By Phil Kirkbride

FC United of Manchester 3-2 Marine

PETER Cumiskey was denied a dream return to first team action as a late FC United goal subjected Marine to their first defeat in six matches.

The experienced Marine striker started for the first time in six games and looked set to be the hero, delivering two equalising goals.

However with two minutes remaining and the game heading for a draw, FC United substitute Nick Robinson popped up to hit the winner to devastate the Crosby outfit.

Having seen Cumiskey sweep Marine level for the second time after 52 minutes, Alvin McDonald’s men took control of a match that at times threatened to boil over.

Yet a defensive lapse, not fitting of recent performances, allowed FC United to snatch an unlikely victory.

That Robinson’s goal came as such a blow tells a lot about the transformation that Marine undertook in the second half having clung on in the opening 45.

Marine had started brightly with John Lawless, a figure of hate for home supporters throughout the match, forcing Sam Ashton into an early save.

However FC United were quickly up to speed and buoyed on by a vocal backing, attacked Marine with menace.

The opening goal arrived after 19 minutes when Tommy Turner fed on the spoils in the Mariners’ area after Sean Lake had parried Phil Brazier’s miscued clearance.

Despite the intimidating atmosphere, Marine rallied and on 34 minutes Cumiskey spun his defender in the area before being felled.

The No 10 got up to send Ashton the wrong way from the penalty spot to make it 1-1 but his efforts were undone a minute later when Chris Baguley latched onto a cross from the right to slot in FC’s second.

But the second half was only seven minutes old when Tim Bigland crossed for Cumiskey’s eighth goal of the season and from then on, it was Marine who dictated play.

Spurred on by Joe Fowler and substitute Darren Brookfield in the middle, the Mariners almost grabbed the lead as Bigland swung in another teasing cross which deflected off an FC defender forcing Ashton into a fine save.

However United summoned one last surge and a deep cross from the left was missed by everyone in the Marine defence and fell kindly for Robinson to inflict the damage.

Marine’s misery was compounded after full-back Freddie Potter was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured ankle.
