Daddy cool for Rebels with late winner

 Source: MEN

FC United manager Karl Marginson hailed new dad Adam Jones after he helped the Rebels step up their Evo-Stik Premier promotion challenge with an 89th-minute winner at Marine, writes Tony Glennon.

Centre-half Jones, celebrating the birth of son Jacob, arrived unmarked at the far post to nod in Kyle Jacobs’ long free-kick to give FC a 2-1 victory which takes them to within four points of a play-off place in Evo-Stik North.

The Rebels trailed at the break to a Jonathan Goulding goal but Matthew Wolfenden hit a 54th-minute equaliser after great work by Mike Norton.

Marginson said: “It was great for AJ to get the winner. He’s always a threat at set-pieces and took the chance really well.

“With Marine lying immediately above us, the win was extremely important. Hopefully, the manner in which we achieved it will lift us as we approach the run-in.”

Meanwhile, Ashton United seized on the sixth-minute dismissal of Chorley manager Garry Flitcroft’s younger brother Steve to record their fourth successive victory.

Despite their one-man advantage, the Robins fell behind to a 24th-minute Matt Walwyn goal, but hit back to win 3-1 with Aaron Burns’ quick-fire double proving decisive after Matty Koslyo had levelled matters.

Homeless Northwich Victoria’s Wembley dreams were shattered as they slipped to a 3-2 FA Trophy quarter-final defeat to Newport County at Macclesfield’s Moss Rose in boss Paul Simpson’s final game in charge before he embarks on a coaching career in Portugal.

Vics looked like causing an upset when Ian Kearney and Ryan Wade put them 2-0 up.

They were still clinging on to a one-goal lead with five minutes remaining, only to be left heartbroken as Newport sub Jake Harris struck twice to send the visiting Welshmen through.

Curzon Ashton were knocked off the top of the Evo-Stik North First Division by AFC Fylde, who beat them 3-1, while Ramsbottom’s North West Counties League top-of the-table clash at Bootle finished 2-2.

FC United just £80,000 short of share scheme target for £4.6m stadium in Moston

 Source: MEN

FC United are hoping to start building work on their controversial new £4.6m stadium by this summer, we can reveal.

Bosses at the rebel club, formed in protest at the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United, want to be in the 5,000-capacity Moston development in time for the 2013/14 season.

And they believe ground could be broken before the end of Spring after they edged closer to their funding target.

FC, who currently play at Bury’s Gigg Lane, need to show that they have the money in place before building work can begin.

Of the £4.6m total, £1.6m will come from a community share scheme.

Last month we reported that the club was £200,000 short of the share scheme mark but this has now been reduced to about £80,000, club officials say.

A further £250,000 has been raised via a development fund with an additional £550,000 secured in the form of a grant from Manchester council.

About £300,000 will come from a collection of other grants while £1.4m is subject to funding from Sport England and the Football Foundation, with a decision expected by the end of March.

That takes the total to £4.1m – and last month we told how the town hall would step in with a £500,000 loan to make up the rest if necessary.

But FC bosses remain hopeful they can raise the additional amount themselves. Manchester council also handed over £200,000 for feasibility studies.

FC’s general manager, Andy Walsh, said: "The funding is coming together as planned and we are looking forward to beginning work in either late spring or early summer."

The site is currently leased from Manchester council by Moston Juniors FC.

They will be given new pitches inside the development, which includes a public medical room which will be managed by club physiotherapists.

Formed in 2005, FC United currently play in the seventh tier of English football and this season have been averaging crowds of about 1,800.

Campaigners have protested against the stadium being built on what they see as a precious green space.

They also say an existing covenant on the land prohibits it for being used for such a purpose and are worried the stadium will bring an increase in anti-social behaviour and traffic problems.

One of the campaigners, Mike Patillo, pointed out that the club were still to complete the legal formalities.

He said: "They need a section 106 agreement which they haven’t got and until then they cannot build anything."

«Επαναστάτες»... με σπίτι!

 Source: metrosport.gr

 Google Translation: "Rebels" ...a home!

Ένα μακρόχρονο σχέδιο, ένα σχέδιο που ισούται με ένα μεγάλο όνειρο. Η FC United of Manchester

Manchester 1878", "Manchester Central", "Newton Heath United".

‘We are not playing Manchester United’ warns Marine FC boss Kevin Lynch

 Source: Crosby Herald

KEVIN LYNCH admits Marine are still searching for a win over FC United of Manchester because they have built the rivalry into something it is not.

The Mariners boss says their downfall against The Rebels has often been in believing the match has to assume similar bitterness to that of Manchester United against Liverpool.

In seven attempts since FC United were promoted into Step Three of the non-league system, Marine have failed to pick up a victory and on many occasions the games have been ill-tempered affairs, both on and off the pitch.

Each time Lynch has led Marine into a match with the Gigg Lane outfit, he has called for cool heads in the heat of battle but this time he felt the need to remind his players they are facing FC United and not the Premier League club from which they broke away.

The manager is excited about Saturday's game at the Arriva Stadium but more for it being a clash of promotion challengers rather than Scousers against Mancunians.

“We haven't beat them yet but there has got to be a first time and hopefully that can be Saturday," said Lynch.

"I think we used to believe we were playing Man United and when you do that and have that mindset, you are already two goals down.

"We have to remember that FC United are just a team in our league that are challenging for honours like we are.

"Certainly the last few times we've played them have been draws which hopefully shows we are getting to grips with the fixture and realising that it's just another game.

"Recently I have seen us play in front of the big crowds and relish the challenge.

"I'm expecting a good football game with two teams that will certainly play the right way.

"There is huge interest in terms of fan base and should be a good advert for the league.

"You will also see both teams looking to win the game because we are both attack minded. I'm looking forward to the game and no player needs any extra motivation because of the sort of game it is.

"But it is not because of the rivalry which exists between Manchester United and either Liverpool or Everton. It is because of where we both are in the league."

Sixth placed Marine hold a five point advantage over FC United in the Evo-Stik Premier Division standings following last weekend's round of results.

As the Manchester side required a last minute equaliser at home to Frickley Athletic, the Whites picked up a point at high-flying Hednesford Town.

Lynch left Keys Park knowing his side had opportunities to win the game but was nevertheless happy to have taken four points from the Staffordshire side this season.

“On paper and everything else, it is a good point," he said.

"To get four points over the course of the season leaves me pretty satisfied although we had the better chances on Saturday.

"But if you had given me a point before the game then I would've taken it."

Fans not financiers should run football

 Source: Socialist Party

Professional football in Britain is stumbling from one crisis to another. After repeatedly failing to deal with racism, attention returns to financial malpractice. In one week, two of Britain's most famous clubs, Portsmouth and Glasgow Rangers have gone into administration.

In both cases short-term club owners have taken a cavalier attitude to their responsibilities to run the clubs in a financially prudent manner, neglecting to make adequate provision to pay tax and other liabilities. The victims, again, are the communities the clubs are based in, the supporters, charities such as St John's Ambulance and small businesses.

In the premier league era, attention has focussed on some players' inflated wages. The real story however has been off the pitch.

Clubs in Britain have been attractive for speculators and their retinue of agents, accountants, solicitors and other advisers, looking for windfall profits if they can get them into a higher league or European competition. And speculators find that the Football League welcomes them with open arms.

As the Football League explained: "At all times following its takeover of Portsmouth, Convers Sports Initiatives (CSI, the owners), complied with the requirements of the owners' and directors' test as set out in the regulations of the Football League".

The League failed to mention that its 'test' is largely self-certification and the absence of any fraud convictions. They don't say that the majority shareholder of CSI was prevented by the Financial Services Authority from gaining a UK banking licence. If speculators' plans don't work out, taxpayers and the local community pick up the losses.

Many people have an obsessive interest in football. With the increasing harshness of everyday life for workers and young people, this is no surprise. Football should provide some light relief.

Portsmouth and Rangers fans should demand genuine open inquiries into financial mismanagement. These inquiries should primarily involve supporters, non-playing staff, players' representatives and elected local authorities. They need to expose how the clubs have been run.

The football leagues should also be exposed as a cabal of owners rather than organisations with football's wider interests at heart.

Football should be controlled by the fans. This will require building on the achievements of fans-owned clubs such as AFC Wimbledon and FC United of Manchester.

Old Rebel back in town as fans' favourite returns to the FC fold

 Source: MEN

FC United have re-signed former fans’ favourite Danny Warrender after an absence of more than two years.

The 26-year-old ex-City trainee played nearly 50 times for the Rebels before leaving in December 2009 due to injury and personal problems.

But now he’s back with FC after convincing manager Karl Marginson he has the desire to help them make a big push for promotion in the final third of the campaign.

Marginson said: “Danny has gone through a tough time, but anyone who saw him play last time he was with us will know he has the potential to be a great addition to our squad, particularly as he can operate in either defence or midfield.

“I’m confident that, with him on board to boost us, we’ll be in contention for a play-off place at the end of the season.”

Seventh-placed United resume their Evo-Stik Premier promotion quest after a three week-long weather-enforced break from league action when they host Frickley tomorrow, just four days after the Yorkshire strugglers sent them spinning out of the Doodson Sport Cup.

Marginson was bitterly disappointed by that result but now wants his players to focus on what he describes as the “14 cup finals” which lie ahead.

Meanwhile, Ashton United continue their safety quest with a visit to Stafford, while FC United’s fellow promotion hopefuls Northwich, buoyed by having booked a home FA Trophy quarter-final tie with Newport County, return to league duty at North Ferriby.

Relegation-threatened Stockport’s four-game unbeaten run in Blue Square Bet Premier will be put to the test when they travel to high-flying York City.

Hatters boss Jim Gannon is taking heart from the six points his struggling side have collected from those matches but says County must end their reliance on scoring from set-pieces if they’re to stay out of the drop-zone.

“We have to start showing enough quality to score in open play,” he said.

“York are up there because they are a really good side so we’re going to have to work really hard to get points .”

Runaway Blue Square Bet North leaders Hyde have a blank date, giving fourth-placed neighbours Stalybridge Celtic, who have failed to win any of their last seven league games, the chance to revive their fading title challenge at the expense of visiting Workington.

Altrincham must beat seemingly relegation-bound Blyth at Moss Lane if they’re to continue to be regarded as strong play-off candidates.

And Dave Pace’s Droylsden can almost certainly forget thoughts of promotion if they fail to send Bishop’s Stortford back to Hertfordshire with anything other than a defeat.

Evo-Stik North title contenders Curzon Ashton face a testing trip to Farsley.

Salford host Wakefield and Woodley entertain Ossett Albion, but Trafford, Radcliffe and Mossley are all away.

North West Counties leaders Ramsbottom have a League Cup third-round date at Winsford.

Frickley dump FC out of Cup

 Source: The Star

FRICKLEY Athletic booked their place in the semi-finals of the Doodson Sport League Cup after coming from a goal down to beat FC United of Manchester 3-1 last night.

Mike Norton gave United a seventh minute lead which the visitors held until the 42nd minute when Kelvin Bleau made a made an excellent run unto the box before firing home the leveller. Within two minutes Frickley had turned the tie on its head as defender Stuart Ludlam outjumped the United defence to bullet home a header to send the hosts in 2-1 up.

Frickley came close to extending the lead just after the break only for Peter Knox to fire a geat chance over the crossbar when the veteran striker ought to have done better. However, the Blues grabbed the third on 72 minutes when Danny Walsh slotted home after Ryan Mallon had laid the ball off from a James Ashmore cross.

In the Baris NCEL Premier Division, Armthorpe Welfare came away from Nostell MW with a 1-1 draw. James Eyre’s gave the home side 54th minute but Armthorpe levelled with six minutes left, James Walker latching onto a ball over the defence to score from a tight angle. The visitors almost snatched three points in the last minute when Joe Lumsden’s shot was brilliantly pushed round the post.

Chairman speaks out on Whitby Town’s finances

 Source: Whitby Gazette

WHITBY Town chairman Graham Manser has written an open letter to the people of the town to address speculation over the club’s long-term financial position.

The Blues lost between £6,000 and £7,000 after the big match at home to FC United of Manchester recently was frozen off, with the game now rearranged for a Wednesday, leading to a lower gate than would be expected on a weekend.

Despite branding the postponement “a disaster” in last Friday’s Gazette, Mr Manser is reassuring everyone connected with Whitby Town FC that the problem is temporary and is urging everyone to pull together to avoid relegation and stay in the EvoStik League’s top tier.

“Firstly can I set everybody’s minds at rest in that there is no long-term problem with the financial health of the club,” said Mr Manser.

“If we are relegated we will have to cut our cloth accordingly.

“Secondly - yes, there is a temporary cash flow problem following from the postponement of the FC United match which is being addressed.

“We will not know the eventual loss until FC return on Wednesday 28 March.

“Let us hope they are pressing for a play-off place as they will bring more supporters.

“If supporters would like to help financially why not join the weekly draw, it is only £1 per week – just contact me.

Mr Manser says he would like to thank everybody who has shown their “well-intentioned if somewhat misplaced” concern.

“We have always enjoyed a very good relationship with the league and you can see from our fixtures that all the long travels are either in autumn or spring.

“There have been suggestions that we should have played FC at home on 10 March but that is a League Cup weekend and FC already have a game.

“To be fair to the league they have given us Burscough away on that day which is very thoughtful.

“I am sure the manager would prefer to play FC at home midweek rather than Burscough away midweek.

“We cannot really expect the league to alter FC’s fixtures to suit a home game for this club.

“Obviously there would be a severe impact on other fixtures in the league and total disruption.

“It was just this club’s bad luck the bad weather struck and we will have to get on with it and solve the problem ourselves.

“I have always said that I am available to discuss anything with anybody at any time and before people jump on bandwagons, I suggest they telephone me to find the full facts.

“Let us put this behind us we need to all pull together to stay in this tremendous league.”

If you have any fund-raising ideas to help Whitby Town Football Club, call Mr Manser on (01947) 605921.

Rebels pair put their best feet forward

 Source: MEN

FC United stars Mike Norton and Nicky Platt are to swap their boots for trainers to help the Evo-Stik Premier promotion hopefuls fulfil their dream of building their own ground in Moston.

The Rebels are rapidly closing in on the £1.6m they are aiming to raise through a community share scheme towards the cost of the new stadium.

Ace marksman Norton and midfielder Platt have agreed to take part in the fundraising quest by joining more than 20 FC fans in this year’s Great Manchester 10k run on Sunday May 20.

It will be the seventh time United supporters have participated in the event. Last year, they raised more than £6,000. Norton said: “I probably cover more miles on the pitch than any of my team-mates because my first touch is so poor so, hopefully, I’ll get round the course from the city-centre to Old Trafford and back to Deansgate without any mishaps.

Fittest

“Platty is probably the fittest man at the club, so there’s no point me trying to keep up with him if he takes the run seriously.

“But it will be great to have our own stadium and, if Platty and I have to make fools of ourselves to help ensure that we get one, we’re more than happy to do it.”

FC United’s clash with Burscough at Gigg Lane on Saturday was among dozens of local non-League fixtures frozen off at the weekend.

Also wiped out were the Blue Square Bet North games involving Altrincham, Droylsden, Hyde and Stalybridge Celtic.

So, too, was Ashton United’s Evo-Stik Premier tussle with Marine at Hurst Cross plus all matches featuring local Evo-Stik North and North West Counties League sides.

FC United are due to visit Frickley Athletic in the Doodson Sport Cup quarter-finals tomorrow (7.45pm), while homeless Northwich Victoria will make a third attempt to stage their FA Trophy third-round tie with Hampton and Richmond Borough at Nantwich Town’s Weaver Stadium.

Blues’ cup clash with FC United of Manchester postponed

Source: Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express

FRICKLEY Athletic’s Doodson Sport Cup clash with FC United of Manchester, scheduled to take place tomorrow night, has been postponed.

A statement on the Blues’ official site says the match has been postponed “due to the amount of snow and ice on the pitch.”

A new date for the clash has already been arranged for Tuesday, February 14 at the Tech5 Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).

Wintry woe wipes out Whitby’s sports fixtures

 Source: Whitby Gazette

THE entire Whitby area’s sports fixtures were wiped out by wintry weather at the weekend.

Whitby Town’s money-spinning league match at home to well supported FC United of Manchester was postponed on Saturday morning due to a frozen pitch.

A gate of 1,000 was possible with FC United fans already in Whitby the previous night.

However, the game is now likely to be played midweek instead which will drastically affect the attendance and mean the club misses out a financial bonanza.

The entire Eskvale and Cleveland League and Teesside League programmes were wiped out, along with the Scarborough and District Saturday League. The rugby fixtures at The Showfield for Whitby Rugby Club 1sts and 2nds were also affected.

Junior fixtures yesterday also fell victim to the snow and ice.
