The backroom team at Horsfall Stadium are working hard to maximise their income so that they can compete in the Blue Square Bet North Division after winning promotion.
Finance director Kevin Hainsworth and chairman John Dean are looking into new avenues of sponsorship and are also trying to extend their ties with their long- term partners.
The club’s chief executive officer Bob Blackburn is helping out in his own area of expertise and overseeing extensive work on the ground.
Blackburn said: “It will be a Wembley-type surface for the players this coming season because there is a lot of work going into it. We have already done a lot on the buildings and seating areas in the stands.
“There has been a lot more interest since we won promotion, and Kevin and John are doing a lot and season tickets are selling well. It is a big step up - we know that, but we feel we owe it to our supporters to give it our best shot.
“The fans were brilliant last season and I’m glad for them that we repaid them for standing in the rain on miserable midweek nights.
"There will also be a constant reminder of our play- off final win to all the season-ticket holders because a picture of Tom Greaves’ goal is on the back!
“I think that’s brilliant and I couldn’t resist having a dig at Jon Worsnop. I rang him up to tell him he was on the back of our new season ticket – picking the ball out of the back of the net.
"He called me something I couldn’t possibly repeat but he took it in good spirit, and that’s him all over. He loves the banter.”
Worsnop began his career with Bradford’s other club, City, but had a spell with Avenue under Lee Sinnott. He is currently with FC United of Manchester and was between the sticks for the Mancunians in the play-off final.
He had a good game but was finally beaten by Greaves’ predatory strike in the last few minutes of extra time.

Promotion puts us back on map, says Bradford Park Avenue chief Hainsworth as young and old join celebrations

A lifelong supporter of the club, it was an emotional and humbling experience for Avenue director Kevin Hainsworth to see the club finally gain promotion to the Blue Square Bet North and he expects it to raise the club’s profile.
Hainsworth said: “I have been a fan all my life and it was nice to see a lot of people my age and above, who remembered Avenue in the Football League, celebrating after the win over FC United. A lot of them were on the pitch at the end with tears in their eyes.
“Since we reformed we have had an older level of support but it was great to see a lot of younger people at the play-off final and they have been getting on board more and more recently. A lot of them were asking about season tickets for next year.”
The Bradford fans mobbed scorer Tom Greaves when he netted the winner deep into extra-time and had to be ushered back into the stands by the army of stewards. At the final whistle they swarmed back out to celebrate with their heroes.
FC United’s supporters were also on the pitch and even though they lost it was all very good natured and they too were congratulating their own players on taking the promotion race all the way.
Hainsworth added: “I have to say that 99.9 per cent of the FC United fans are phenomenal and they love their football.
“It has been a pleasure sharing the last few seasons in the same division and I hope we stay up because I’m sure the Manchester side will be joining us soon.
“They made it a great atmosphere and quite a lot of them were saying we deserved it because we were the better side on the day. That’s fantastic and it’s what you get at this level because it’s not as partisan as the Football League. You get good banter before and during the games but all the fans share a pint and chat afterwards.”
Avenue were founder members of the Conference North, which is now the Blue Square Bet North thanks to the sponsorship of the online betting company. Hainsworth remembers that brief sojourn, and so will Greaves.
“It couldn’t have been anybody better than Greavesy to score the goal that put us up,” said the club director.
“I remember him coming through as an 18-year-old and that was in the Conference North under Carl Shutt. We got relegated and he left us shortly after Shutty did and played for a few other clubs but things have come full circle and I’m glad for Tom because he is a Bradford lad.
“It hasn’t been easy and it has taken a lot of hard work and finance (gaining promotion following a third play-off campaign on the spin) but it has been worth it. One of the criticisms we have had is that not a lot of people know that Avenue are still around. That has all changed now.”

Extra-time Greaves winner puts Bradford Park Avenue in dreamland

)The goal-poaching instinct of Tom Greaves saw Avenue finally reach their promised land as they gained promotion to the Blue Square Bet North Division.
Greaves’ clinical finish from three yard in the penultimate minute of stoppage time condemned FC United to another season in the Evo-Stik Premier Division and removed the threat of the penalty shoot-out lottery that was imminent.
There was already enough nervous tension around a packed Horsfall Stadium and Greaves’ goal was a more fitting end to an enthralling afternoon.
The first ten minutes of the game were a blur of action, with both teams looking for an early initiative, but from then on Bradford were firmly in the driving seat.
Former Avenue keeper Jon Worsnop returned to Horsfall in United’s colours and it was he who had to make the first save. Alex Davidson cut inside and made himself room for a shot but Worsnop gathered.
Davidson provided the next opening, only to see Nicky Boshell fire over from inside the area, but he was soon limping out of the game with a foot injury.
Club captain Rob O’Brien replaced Davidson and within two minutes he provided a cross for Richard Marshall but his header went into Worsnop’s arms.
The first of two controversial incidents happened midway through the first half. FC United winger Carlos Roca appeared to catch Avenue left back Martin Drury with an elbow. There was a long stoppage but no action from the referee.
Boshell fired over again, this time with a volley from the edge of the area after a corner, but the visitors ended the first half with a half chance of their own. Centre back Adam Jones’ header to a corner was easily plucked out of the air by Lamb.
Bradford bossed possession in the second half without really creating clear-cut chances, with FC United sitting deep and relying on the breakaway.
There were two almighty scrambles in the FC United area but both ended up with Avenue players having hands on heads as chances went begging.
If the visitors were fortunate when Roca was not – at least – yellow-carded for his challenge on Drury, they were exceptionally lucky to end the game with a full compliment after Jake Cotterill landed blows on an Avenue player as the pair hit the ground following a 50/50 challenge. There was an immediate melee but again no action from the referee.
The visitors stepped up a gear in extra-time while Avenue’s players looked tired after their endeavours throughout the game.
However, the home side had fresh legs up front. O’Brien, who only made the bench after recovering from a troublesome knee injury, was forced off in the 72nd minute and replaced by Matty James. Greaves came on four minutes before the end of the first extra period.
FC United threatened to steal the game but Avenue’s defence were stoic and then came the knife through Manchester hearts. With a little over 90 seconds remaining, Avenue launched another concerted attack which eventually led to Adam Clayton drilling the ball into the box and there was Greaves to add the crucial touch.
Delighted boss John Deacey said: “I thought we deserved it because we played well. We are all absolutely delighted. We just want to go and enjoy the celebrations now because these kinds of victories, days like this, don’t come around that often.”

Change of day matters little to Bradford Park Avenue as John Deacey aims to seal promotion

Bradford Park Avenue’s destiny will be known on Sunday after they host great rivals FC United of Manchester in the final of the Evo-Stik League Premier Division play-offs.
The clash was originally scheduled for tomorrow and Avenue had their allocation of tickets on sale before they were informed that the authorities would not sanction the game.
A combination of Bradford City being at home to Paulo Di Canio’s League Two champions Swindon Town, the police being stretched by two high-profile matches with simultaneous kick-offs and the local council being concerned about two sets of out-of-town supporters in the city centre at the same time led to Avenue’s game being put back a day.
Avenue director Kevin Hainsworth said: “Both the clubs (Avenue and FC United) wanted the original date and kick-off time but the decision was taken out of our hands.
“As I have said previously, it doesn’t matter who holds the safety certificate for the ground or who is providing the stewards, once that decision had been made the clubs had to fall into line.
“I certainly didn’t want it moved because I had arranged to go to the Guiseley game on Sunday.

“We have a great relationship with FC United – they played us here in last season’s play-offs on a midweek night and everything was fine. We are looking forward to the game and I’m sure it will be good one.”
Avenue manager John Deacey is pleased with his squad following their 5-0 victory over Hednesford Town in the semi-finals that set up this meeting of old foes.
The final would have been a roses derby in any event as FC United beat fellow Lancastrians Chorley in their last-four clash.
Deacey said: “It was a superb effort in the last game, a real team performance with good play despite dreadful conditions.
“I thought all the lads were magnificent but – I’m sorry, I have to say it – Jordan was man of the match for me.
“He had a hand in four of the five goals and was superb in the midfield linking up play and making intelligent runs.”
Jordan Deacey is the manager’s son and usually not singled out for praise by the boss.
There was a scare for Avenue against Hednesford when James Knowles, skipper on the day in the absence of injured club captain Rob O’Brien, signalled to the bench that his central defensive partner James Riley could not continue.
Deacey said: “James has come back from a hamstring injury and he felt it tighten up, so it was just a precaution to substitute him.
“Rob will also be available for Sunday, so I’ve got a selection headache but a nice one.
“I am picking the best side for the situation on the day to give this club the best chance of gaining promotion.
“I have done all I can, Mark (assistant Hume) has done all he can and it is all about the players now. I just hope we can deliver.”

Bradford Park Avenue's final moved to Sunday on police advice

Bradford Park Avenue had an administrative nightmare to contend with today after their Evo-Stik League Premier Division play-off final at home to FC United of Manchester was switched from Saturday to Sunday on police advice.
Director Kevin Hainsworth said: “Within half an hour of us putting our tickets on sale for what we thought was a Saturday game, we were informed that the authorities wouldn’t allow it to go ahead on that day.
“They had gathered information from various FC United fans' forums and decided there was a risk of trouble. They contacted Bradford Council (owners of the stadium), and it doesn’t matter who is providing the stewarding or who holds the safety certificate for the ground when it come to matters like this so it was off from then.
“We had to convene a meeting with the league and FC United and rearrange the game. It will now be Sunday with a 2pm kick-off.
"I would ask any Bradford supporters to buy their tickets as soon as possible because we sold 750 in the first two hours.”
The match is all-ticket with each club having an allocation of 1,000 - exactly half as the capacity has been set at 2,000.

They are priced the same as league games: adult £9, concessions £6 and under 16s £2 and will be available today and tomorrow (midday until 4pm and 7pm until 9pm) and Friday (midday until 5pm).

Bradford Park Avenue get chance for revenge over FC United in play-off final

Avenue are just one game away from promotion to Blue Square Bet North after cruising to victory over Hednesford Town.
The visitors were already 3-0 down and out of the game when frustration got the better of skipper Jay Denny.
The Town midfielder launched himself into a two-footed challenge on Richard Marshall and was sent off.
Marshall, who had opened the scoring with a 26th-minute penalty, escaped injury and went on to wrap up the scoring as Avenue went nap.
The play-off semi-final victory means John Deacey’s men will have home advantage over FC United of Manchester in the final.
Avenue host their red rose rivals next Saturday as they get a chance to gain revenge following last year’s semi-final Horsfall defeat to FC United.
Bradford had to overcome a testing opening period against Hednesford, with both clubs troubled by the elements but the visitors appearing to settle more quickly.
But once the home side got on top, they made their dominance count with the only setback coming when they conceded a late first-half penalty.
The deadlock was broken when midfielder Jordan Deacey was tripped millimetres inside the visitors’ area but the referee was right up with play and pointed to the spot. Marshall fired his spot-kick into the bottom corner.
Five minutes before the interval Deacey floated a corner to the far post and Adam Clayton headed Avenue’s second goal.
On the stroke of half-time, James Osborne went down in Avenue’s area after a defender stepped across him but home keeper John Lamb saved Chris Clements’ penalty.
Avenue had been playing against the wind in that first period and were even stronger with it at their back.
Hednesford gambled with a double substitution just before the hour mark and switched from a 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 system.
Martin Drury went on a run just after the hour and it opened up for him as he neared the visitors’ area so he decided to shoot, burying a low shot to make it 3-0.
Denny had his rush of blood soon after and once he had departed Avenue created plenty more chances.
Another Deacey corner was converted by James Knowles’ header then in the penultimate minute Marshall was in the way of a shot from a team-mate but controlled it before spinning round to fire home.
Avenue boss Deacey said: “Some will point at the penalty save as a turning point, going in at half-time 2-0 up when it could have been 2-1, but I believe we were in control and would still have won.
“It was difficult in the conditions and with the surface but we got the ball down and played our passing game. I thought the lads were tremendous.”

Bradford Park Avenue come unstuck against bogey side again

Bradford Park Avenue 2, FC United of Manchester 5 FC United of Manchester maintained their recent domination over Evo-Stik League rivals Bradford Park Avenue as they cruised to a comfortable Premier Division win at Horsfall Stadium.
Avenue directors and volunteers worked hard to get surface water off the pitch to ensure the game between the promotion rivals went ahead.
But it proved a thankless task as FC United closed to within a point of their sixth-placed hosts, who have a game in hand.
Quick-fire doubles in both halves gave the visitors victory by a landslide margin.
Avenue press officer Lewis Sale said: “In the first half we were unlucky because we were arguably the better team but defensive errors and lack of cutting edge cost us yet again.
“I think FC were on top in the second half but 5-2 flattered them. It is a big chance missed to take points off one of our promotion rivals once again by us.”
The first-half turning point came with ten minutes remaining. Having brought it back to 1-1 just after the half-hour mark, the visitors raced into a 3-1 lead with two goals in as many minutes.
A poor goalkick from John Lamb allowed FC United right back Paul Armstrong to lob in and then a slip by Avenue centre back James Riley gifted Mike Norton a chance to fire home.
That was in contrast to the beginning of the roses clash as Avenue had got off to a bright start, with Rob O’Brien and Michael Duckworth both going close before Adam Clayton headed a Jordan Deacey free-kick onto the bar.
Avenue did break the deadlock when Curtis Bernard slotted in after good work from Nathan Hotte.
But the 15th-minute opener was cancelled out by Nicky Platt’s thunderous 20-yard shot into the top corner in the 32nd minute.
Martin Drury went close with a cross-shot early in the second half but FC United countered with a Jake Cotterill free-kick that went just over.
Avenue boss John Deacey decided to ring the changes on the hour by making his first two substitutions. Billy Law came on for Richard Marshall and Matty James replaced goal-scorer Bernard.
Unfortunately for the home side it had a negative effect and within minutes the visitors had racked up an unassailable 5-1 lead.
Lamb misjudged an Adam Jones free-kick in the 62nd minute and the ball found its way over the line. Then five minutes later a cross into the area from Stephen Johnson cut out both home centre-backs and Matt Woffenden fired in.
With the game won, FC United made a double substitution as Richard Battersby and Matthew Tierney replaced Paul Armstrong and Daniel Grimshaw.
The hosts did pull one back when Hotte converted an 80th-minute corner from Deacey.
But as if to underline their superiority, FC United had the ball in the net again only to see the strike disallowed for offside.

That was in contrast to the beginning of the roses clash as Avenue had got off to a bright start, with Rob O’Brien and Michael Duckworth both going close before Adam Clayton headed a Jordan Deacey free-kick onto the bar.
Avenue did break the deadlock when Curtis Bernard slotted in after good work from Nathan Hotte.
But the 15th-minute opener was cancelled out by Nicky Platt’s thunderous 20-yard shot into the top corner in the 32nd minute.
Martin Drury went close with a cross-shot early in the second half but FC United countered with a Jake Cotterill free-kick that went just over.
Avenue boss John Deacey decided to ring the changes on the hour by making his first two substitutions. Billy Law came on for Richard Marshall and Matty James replaced goal-scorer Bernard.
Unfortunately for the home side it had a negative effect and within minutes the visitors had racked up an unassailable 5-1 lead.
Lamb misjudged an Adam Jones free-kick in the 62nd minute and the ball found its way over the line. Then five minutes later a cross into the area from Stephen Johnson cut out both home centre-backs and Matt Woffenden fired in.
With the game won, FC United made a double substitution as Richard Battersby and Matthew Tierney replaced Paul Armstrong and Daniel Grimshaw.
The hosts did pull one back when Hotte converted an 80th-minute corner from Deacey.
But as if to underline their superiority, FC United had the ball in the net again only to see the strike disallowed for offside.

Guiseley overcome early injuries to make Trophy progress

Guiseley were victorious in their FA Trophy tie at home to FC United of Manchester but the Lions were far from rampant.
Steve Kittrick’s men booked their place in tomorrow’s second-round draw but it was more of a workman-like display, rather than a mesmerising performance.
That is probably paying due credit to FC United, who may be a step below Guiseley on the football pyramid but still present a formidable challenge.
The hosts were forced into first-half alterations to their game plan when they suffered two early injuries, with striker Danny Forrest (hamstring) and midfielder Danny Boshell (groin) both being forced off.
They were already without Chris Senior, who is on loan from Blue Square Bet Premier Division outfit Alfreton Town. His parent club’s manager Nicky Law did not want his player cup-tied.
Despite the shuffling of his pack, Kittrick’s side did force openings in the goalless first half.
Ciaran Toner fired over in the first minute and Andy Holdsworth shot just wide two minutes later.
Former Huddersfield Town player Holdsworth went close again midway through the half when he headed over from a Dave Merris cross.
Gavin Rothery had a shot deflected for a corner and Toner twice went close again before Joe O’Neill, who had replaced Forrest, put the last chance of the first half off target.
FC United had more possession after the break then they had enjoyed in the first period and it took Guiseley a while to create another opening.
Skipper Simon Ainge headed wide from a Holdsworth corner before the breakthrough finally came.
Rothery saw his 71st-minute shot parried by the visitors’ keeper but he netted at the second attempt – and later turned provider.
His good work and intelligent pass set up Lee Ellington and he put the result beyond doubt three minutes from time.

Guiseley’s reward for their 7-0 thrashing of Eastwood Town in a Carlsberg FA Trophy tie at the weekend is a home draw against FC United of Manchester in the first round a week this Saturday.
Today’s draw handed the Lions home advantage against the club with the big support who came within one game of joining them in the Blue Square Bet North Division.
FC United, like Bradford Park Avenue, were in the play-offs last May and, after beating Avenue, they were themselves beaten in the final at Colwyn Bay.
FC Halifax Town are also still in the FA Trophy but face a replay against Colwyn Bay after the sides drew 0-0 in Wales on Saturday.
Should the Shaymen be successful tomorrow night they will host Blue Square Bet Premier Division club Lincoln City .
Guiseley are in action tomorrow, defending their West Riding County Cup when they host Harrogate Railway Athletic at Nethermoor.

Bradford Park Avenue fall apart after penalty woe

A three-goal salvo in the last 11 minutes handed FC United a handsome victory over a stunned Avenue side.
John Deacey’s men had matched their hosts for most of the game but fell apart after conceding a late penalty.
The defeat dropped Avenue from second to sixth in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division table, one place below FC United who leapfrogged them on goal difference.
But they have not lost too much ground because the top seven clubs are separated by just three points.
Avenue lost striker Aiden Savory to what looked like a hamstring injury early on and also had a strong penalty claim waved away when Nicky Boshell went through and seemed to be impeded by two home defenders.
United took the lead midway through the first half when Lee Neville headed in following a corner but Avenue responded in the 36th minute. Michael Duckworth, who had replaced Savory, raced into the home area and dispossessed a defender before slotting in.
The home side still led at the interval though after Avenue were guilty of questionable defending at another set-piece. Again the delivery from the corner was allowed to reach an unmarked FC man, this time Adam Jones heading in.
Avenue got back on terms just after the hour mark when Richard Marshall netted a superb strike after a move that had stemmed from a throw-in.
The Bradford club almost snatched the lead in the 71st minute but midfielder Rob O’Brien’s shot on the turn was tipped for a corner. Then it all went wrong.
Michael Norton broke into the Avenue area but was in a wide position at an acute angle to the goal when Alex Noteman, who had also come off the bench following an injury to Matty Plummer, took him down. Stephen Torpey netted from the spot.
Two minutes later Michael Carr produced a wonder strike to make it 4-3 and in the penultimate minute, following a sweeping passing move, Matthew Wolfenden wrapped up the scoring.
There was further injury woe for Avenue boss Deacey as James Knowles, who had returned to the starting line-up as skipper, limped out of central defence before the end of the game.

In the three years that Bob Blackburn has been the owner of Bradford Park Avenue, the club have gained promotion from UniBond Division One and then been involved in the play-offs for promotion from the Premier Division twice.
However, Blackburn says: “If I could go back in time, I would have asked to stage last season’s play-off semi-final against FC United of Manchester at Valley Parade. Their supporters had too much influence on the game at Horsfall.
“There were a couple of thousand of them and there were things being thrown on the pitch and flares going off on the terraces and everything.
"Our players had never witnessed anything like it and had one eye on the stands. You can’t win a football match like that, I wish we had switched it to a bigger venue - you never know, it might have meant a different outcome.”
The opening three Avenue pre-season friendlies have only whetted the appetite of Blackburn.
Their chief executive officer flew back into Britain a couple of weeks after the players had returned to training.
He was soon on the sidelines watching John Deacey putting the players through their paces and stated at the time that the new campaign could not ‘come quickly enough’ because he missed football so much through the summer.
After watching Avenue’s new-look squad play at Tadcaster Albion and then at home to Droylsden last week and in the Bradford friendly derby last night, Blackburn is looking forward to the new campaign even more.
The Avenue chief said: “I’m more confident this year than either of the last two and I think the stats speak for themselves. Everyone at the club works hard and we are knocking on the (promotion) door every season.
“John has built the nucleus of a very good side here and he now has a lot of lads who have played together for a few years.
"He is trying to add the right kind of people to that squad - ones that can fit in because we are a football-playing side.
“I’m really looking forward to it but that’s mainly because I’m a fan. Every supporter of every club up and down the land will feel exactly the same at this time of year.
"My boyhood club was Liverpool and I’m convinced they will challenge for the Premier League title, like I do every year. Maybe I’m just too involved as a fan, with Avenue and Liverpool, that it’s clouding my judgement but I certainly hope not.”
Blackburn, Avenue chairman John Dean and fellow director Kevin Hainsworth have ploughed a lot of time, energy and personal money into the club over the years.
The chief executive officer's building company Kelvic are the main sponsors and they have done extensive work at the council-owned Horsfall Stadium during the close season.
The board of directors know that the money and time they put into the ground is non refundable but they do it to ensure Avenue make the right impression for a club pushing for promotion to the Blue Square Bet North Division.

Another bitter-sweet ride on the Bradford Park Avenue rollercoaster

Bradford Park Avenue are galvanising themselves and looking to gain strength from their experience after Thursday’s disappointing defeat in the Evo-Stik Premier Division play-offs.
It is the second season on the trot that Avenue have tasted bitter defeat at home in front of a bumper crowd in the end-of-season extras.
Last term they finished as runners-up but were defeated by Boston United. This season Avenue ended in third spot and a 2-0 loss to FC United of Manchester.
“It is a dreadfully disappointing feeling but its part of the game,” said Bradford director Kevin Hainsworth.
“It was a superb atmosphere at Horsfall Stadium on Thursday night. I don’t think we performed overly well, I think the occasion got to the players.
"But, as they say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, so we 'dust ourselves down and start all over again’ as the song goes.
“You have to congratulate FC United and their fans. In an atmosphere like that those supporters are like an extra man, so when we had a man sent off it was as if it was 12 against ten. You have to be honest and say they got at us early, didn’t let us settle and were worthy winners.
“I spoke to Lee (FC United’s manager Marginson) for a while after the game and wished him and his club well in Monday’s play-off final at Colwyn Bay.
"It was nice to speak with him and its how football should be - you fight tooth and nail on the pitch and you make friends off it.
“On reflection, it’s bitter-sweet really because going back to January we would have taken facing FC United in the play-offs.
"Now it’s happened, it is over for us but what a ride. We wouldn’t be Avenue if we didn’t do things the hard way.
“We are working on next season already. John (manager Deacey) has asked me to go this week and watch a player we are thinking of bringing in. Just because our season is over doesn’t mean we will be clocking off.”

The Bradford club ended the Roses clash – watched by a crowd of 2,785 – with ten men following the dismissal of centre back James Riley early in the second half.
That second yellow came just minutes after the visitors had doubled their first-half lead.
The visitors broke the deadlock when Matty Wolfenden pounced on a rebound to slot in after Avenue keeper John Lamb had parried an effort from skipper Mike Norton. That sparked wild celebrations in the throngs of visiting supporters and smoke from a flare.
Avenue went close to an equaliser when an effort following a Martin Drury corner was headed off the line and onto the crossbar.
There was still all to play for at the start of the second half but just two minutes had elapsed when Norton latched onto Wolfenden’s ball across the area to steer in United’s second.
The writing appeared to be on the wall for Avenue’s chances in the 50th minute when Riley went for an early bath. His second booking was for dissent as he hurled the ball to the turf in frustration.

Bradford Park Avenue hoping to take extra step

Bradford Park Avenue are expecting a bumper crowd as they host FC United of Manchester in tomorrow night’s Evo-Stik League Premier Division play-off semi-final.
John Deacey’s men snatched home advantage for the one-off clash to determine who goes through to Bank Holiday Monday’s final with a 3-1 away win on the last day of the regular season. Avenue clinched third spot as FC United suffered a defeat and had to settle for fourth.
The Horsfall side will be keen to go one better than last year but know the might of their opponents. At the end of the last campaign, Avenue were second to Guiseley and in the box seat for the play-offs, only to end up beaten in the final by Boston United after extra time.
Both Guiseley and Boston have done well in the Blue Square Bet North competition this term and are challenging for promotion to the top tier of non-League football.
Avenue have seen that and desperately want to emulate last season’s rivals but are aware of the popularity and financial clout of the club born out of the Glazers’ takeover at Old Trafford.
“To have finished third, above FC United, is amazing after the position we were in when John (Deacey) returned as manager,” said Avenue chairman John Dean.
“I think we were 16th and almost half of the season was gone but John and his assistant Mark Hume have done wonderfully well. When we won at Mickleover in the last league game, it was our eighth victory on the trot.
“The players, the management team and even the supporters were disappointed because it was 3-1, which meant we had let a goal in. The last goal we conceded before that was April 2 – and Mickleover got their goal in the 88th minute, so that made it more galling in a way.
“For us all to be so upset just because we let one in late in a 3-1 win shows what brilliant form we have been in and we hope John can keep working his magic for the next two games and take us up, especially after last year’s bitter disappointment against Boston.”

John Deacey’s men snatched home advantage for the one-off clash to determine who goes through to Bank Holiday Monday’s final with a 3-1 away win on the last day of the regular season. Avenue clinched third spot as FC United suffered a defeat and had to settle for fourth.
The Horsfall side will be keen to go one better than last year but know the might of their opponents. At the end of the last campaign, Avenue were second to Guiseley and in the box seat for the play-offs, only to end up beaten in the final by Boston United after extra time.
Both Guiseley and Boston have done well in the Blue Square Bet North competition this term and are challenging for promotion to the top tier of non-League football.
Avenue have seen that and desperately want to emulate last season’s rivals but are aware of the popularity and financial clout of the club born out of the Glazers’ takeover at Old Trafford.
“To have finished third, above FC United, is amazing after the position we were in when John (Deacey) returned as manager,” said Avenue chairman John Dean.
“I think we were 16th and almost half of the season was gone but John and his assistant Mark Hume have done wonderfully well. When we won at Mickleover in the last league game, it was our eighth victory on the trot.
“The players, the management team and even the supporters were disappointed because it was 3-1, which meant we had let a goal in. The last goal we conceded before that was April 2 – and Mickleover got their goal in the 88th minute, so that made it more galling in a way.
“For us all to be so upset just because we let one in late in a 3-1 win shows what brilliant form we have been in and we hope John can keep working his magic for the next two games and take us up, especially after last year’s bitter disappointment against Boston.”

Bradford Park Avenue seal home play-offs advantage

Bradford Park Avenue booked home advantage for the Evo-Stik League Premier Division play-offs on Thursday with victory at Mickleover Sports on the final day of the regular campaign.
It was far from comfortable but Avenue’s eighth win on the trot in the league lifted them above FC United in the table, meaning they now face the Manchester outfit in the play-off semi-final.
Mickleover started well and hit the bar in the fourth minute but Avenue responded well and thought they had scored minutes later.
A header from a corner seemed to have crossed the line before being headed out but the officials were unmoved by Avenue’s protests.
The visitors did get in front just after the half-hour mark. Matty Plummer played in Brice Tiani and when his shot was parried, Plummer was well placed to slot in the loose ball.

Substitute David Heagney was brought down in the area and Aiden Savory fired the resulting spot-kick into the corner of the net.

The Lions dominated the first period and created numerous chances. Top scorer James Walshaw had the ball in the net but was flagged offside and skipper Simon Ainge saw a header cleared off the line.
The second half saw Blyth in control without really troubling keeper Steven Drench.
SILSDEN also drew a blank but gained a point from a 0-0 draw at home to Squires Gate in the Vodkat League.
They have two Premier Division games still to play, at home to Ashton Athletic on Wednesday before ending the season with a trip to New Mills on Saturday.
Thackley enjoyed a superb result in their penultimate Kool Sport Northern Counties East League fixture as they returned from a Premier Division trip to Bridlington Town with a 4-2 victory.

Bradford Park Avenue fail to turn pressure into points

Avenue suffered their first defeat under John Deacey’s current reign but the result did not reflect events at Gigg Lane.
FC United’s keeper turned in a man-of-the-match display to foil the visitors and the home side netted twice in the last seven minutes.
The defeat sees Avenue drop to 12th in the Evo-Stik Premier Division table.
There was a surprise in the Avenue line-up, with Matty James making a return after being re-signed from Guiseley in midweek.
While that was surprising, just as big a shock was seeing the skilful, attacking midfielder played at right back.
The rest of the side was the same as the one that ripped Ossett Town apart on New Year’s Day – that 6-0 victory being Avenue’s last run-out.
They set off as though they were going to build on that last win, creating virtually all of the chances, but just could not make the breakthrough.
James started the move that led to the first opening.
A break down the flank gave him the opportunity to put a through ball to Tom Greaves. His cross found Steve Burton, whose shot was blocked and Luke Gibson hit the loose ball over the crossbar.
A shot from Adam Clayton was superbly tipped over by the home keeper, who also got something in the way of the next chance. Avenue had forced a corner that Tom Claisse whipped in to Burton but his shot cannoned back, off a combination of keeper and crossbar, in a blur.
Avenue’s own keeper, Michael Hale, was put to work for the first time just after the hour.
The visitors were soon back on the attack and a free-kick from Martin Drury was headed into the net, Burton getting the last contact in a crowd of players, but the assistant referee’s flag went up.
FC United were on the ropes at that point and how Avenue failed to score on their next foray forward remains a mystery. Aiden Savory went through twice with only the keeper to beat but both times he was thwarted.
Before the ball was cleared, Rob O’Brien, on as a substitute, rifled in a shot that was tipped for a corner and from the flag kick the same man sent in another effort that brought yet another fine save.
FC United began their smash-and-grab through their own substitute. Carlos Roca thumped the ball in after Jerome Wright had cut in from the flank and drilled a hard cross through the six-yard box.
Two minutes into stoppage time they snatched a second when Wright cut in again and this time elected to try his own luck from 25 yards.
Avenue will have no time to dwell on it as they host FC Halifax Town at Horsfall Stadium in a League Cup third round tie tomorrow night.

Greaves hat-trick decisive to delight of packed Horsfall

Striker Tom Greaves was a hat-trick hero as Bradford Park Avenue earned a significant win against rivals FC United of Manchester in front of an almost 1,000-strong crowd at Horsfall Stadium.
Avenue have endured a stuttering start to their season in the renamed Evo-Stik Premier Division but turned out their best performance of the campaign against a side who were riding high in the table.
They even had to come from a goal down to get the victory as one of their former players threatened to spoil the day. A defensive error by Nathan Hay provided an opening for Chris Ovington and the former Leeds United youth player slotted in.
Just over a minute later the home side got a cross into the United area and as keeper Sam Ashton collided with one of his own men, Dominic Riordan fired the loose ball in.
The game was held up for eight minutes while Ashton received treatment. He had almost lost consciousness but recovered to play the rest of the game.
Greaves beat him with a lob but a covering defender just cleared the effort off the line, while a later James Knowles header nestled in the back of Ashton’s net but the strike was ruled out for a foul by the Avenue man.
Those two close calls ensured the first half ended all square but the hosts finished strongly and from Greaves putting them back in front with quarter of an hour remaining, they coasted to an emphatic victory.
Greaves stabbed a low Danny Facey centre into the roof of the net for his first and chased down a defender before stealing possession and shooting in his second.
The hat-trick came in the last few minutes, following a flick on from substitute Marc Smith, to put the gloss on the win.
Meanwhile, there was a second successive draw for Farsley AFC in the Kool Sport Northern Counties East League Premier Division as they were held 1-1 at basement outfit Hall Road Rangers.
Farsley had not had a stalemate this season until Saturday’s 2-2 at Armthorpe Welfare but they were frustrated again despite having the better of the game.
The home side set themselves up not to be beaten and became even harder to break down after they had taken a first-half lead. Mark Jackson headed Farsley’s late equaliser, converting a Roy Stamer free-kick.
It was a similar story for ECCLESHILL UNITED in Division One of the NCE League.
The Eagles were early-season leaders and appear to be up against brick walls, even away from home, because of that.
Marcus Edwards got their only goal in the 1-1 draw at Shirebrook Town.

Avenue's La Liga facility is boon in bad weather

With Bradford Park Avenue due to face FC United of Manchester in the UniBond League Premier Division on Saturday, it could be a third club who hold most sway on the call as to whether the game goes ahead.
FC United, a splinter faction of the Old Trafford giants of a similar name disillusioned with the Glazers’ takeover, play their home games at Gigg Lane.
That means their landlords, Bradford City’s Coca-Cola League Two rivals Bury, will have a vested interest.
Avenue chief executive Bob Blackburn admitted: “We are preparing as though there is no chance whatsoever of the game being played.
“Kevin Hainsworth (one of Blackburn’s co-directors) has been liaising with FC United and they have more or less told him that, but league rules state that a decision cannot be made until tomorrow at the earliest.
“I suppose Bury will have the final say and, after all, it is their pitch and they don’t want any more disruption to their own season.
"At this stage, we are all just hoping the temperature lifts next week and we get some football on.
“I’m getting to the stage where I get up on a Saturday morning full of the joys and then slip into depression when I realise we don’t have a game.
"Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to spend a Saturday with the wife and family now and again – but that’s what summer’s for.”
Avenue manager John Deacey still has his squad of finely-honed players on a minute’s stand-by but the roses clash is likely to be shelved.
With Avenue in second spot, Deacey is hoping that all the division’s clubs suffer the same fate.
If Avenue cannot play, he will want the Retford United versus Boston United game off as well.
That clash sees first hosting third and, whatever the result, it would mean Avenue losing ground in the table without playing.
“Both of those clubs have played more games than us but with this frustrating situation, you feel that the need for points on the board is even more necessary than in a normal season,” said Blackburn.
“We have already planned Saturday's training session, to be honest. That’s how sure we are that the game will be off. We have got three seven-a-side pitches at our La Liga soccer centre and that is handy for us.
“They are all together and if we lift the curtains we have an area the size of at least a third of a full pitch.
"We have kept them clear for Saturday for our lads to get a decent-sized surface to train properly on.
“The facilities are there and better than most non-league clubs, so we use them.
"I have heard that even our neighbours City have experienced difficulties training over this exceptionally icy spell, so we might even be in better shape than some Football League clubs when we do finally get back into it.
“John has also had the lads in at a boxing gym in Leeds while the weather has been so bad.
"They have been football training in midweek and if the game has been off at the weekend, they have gone through their paces with these boxercise classes.”

Victory against title rivals a welcome lift for Sinnott men

Four points from their opening two UniBond League fixtures have given BRADFORD PARK AVENUE an unbeaten start to the Premier Division season and they will endeavour to continue that form on Saturday.
Their latest visitors are Hucknall Town, who have won one and lost one from their early games.
Avenue will be buoyant after beating FC United of Manchester at Horsfall Stadium on Monday and boss Lee Sinnott said: “I was delighted with that result and pleased with our first-half performance.
“There are still certain areas in which we can improve but overall it has been a steady start.”
Avenue and FC United met on the last day of the previous campaign and the resulting draw prevented either club making the play-offs. After two games this term, the Manchester outfit have yet to register a point but Sinnott expects them to mount a challenge.
He said: “As I see it, on Monday we took points off one of our promotion rivals. It was a win and that brings confidence and momentum at any time of the season.
“It is early doors and ridiculous to look at the table but the three points puts us in the pack, which is where you want to be. Even as early as it is in the campaign you don’t want to fall too far behind the pacesetters.
“Another plus is that everyone came through Monday’s game. There are no new injury concerns and everybody who missed all, or part of, the pre-season schedule has now had minutes on the pitch, so we are working towards a stronger squad.”
Avenue are already playing catch-up with neighbouring rivals GUISELEY, who are one of a handful of clubs to have enjoyed a maximum start.
