Ferriby settle for point

NORTH Ferriby shared the points in a thrilling 3-3 draw with FC United of Manchester at Gigg Lane.

Ferriby had 2-0 and 3-2 advantages before having to settle for another valuable point.

Manager Neil Allison had mixed emotions.

He said: "It was always going to be difficult facing an in-form side in front of such a big crowd, and in that respect it's good to come away with something, but if we'd carried our first half performance into the second, I know we could have picked up all three points."

Ferriby were ahead within five minutes through a bizarre own goal.

The advancing Alex Davidson was tackled in the box by Ludovic Quistin, and the FC United defence were left rooted to the spot as the loose ball rolled over the line.

FC immediately set about making amends for this early error, and Ferriby keeper Steve Wilson was in fine form to gather Ben Deegan's far post header after he was flicked on by Jerome Wright.

However, it was Ferriby who went in the happier side at half-time, thanks to doubling their advantage with a sublime move on 43 minutes.

Gary Bradshaw's ball over the top of the FC United defence put Chris Bolder through on goal; the midfielder advanced on goal before playing the ball to the left just in time for the on-rushing Mark Whitehouse to slot home.

Willed on by the 2,000-plus crowd, the home side set about rescuing the tie.

It was Deegan who finally made the breakthrough on 59 minutes, heading home a fine cross from substitute Phil Marsh. Within six minutes, Marsh's corner found the head of captain David Chadwick to bring them level.

On 71 minutes, Davidson's cross was met at the far post by the head of Bolder to put the Villagers back ahead.

Ferriby then looked to have gifted their hosts an equaliser five minutes later when the ball struck the hand of Ben Turner in the box. However, Marsh fired his penalty straight at Wilson.

Just moments afterwards, the referee was again pointing to the spot, after Kevin Larvin had brought down Carlos Roca as the FC United winger raced through on goal.

Larvin saw red for his challenge, and this time Deegan stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.

FC lost their numerical advantage soon after, when Rob Nugent was given his marching orders for a trip on Russell Fry.

Neither side was able to snatch all three points in the closing minutes, and honours were deservedly even at the final whistle.

Ferriby face tough test

NORTH Ferriby travel to face UniBond League Premier Division play-off contenders FC United of Manchester tomorrow.

Having had a slow start to the season, the hosts have recently gained momentum and will fancy their chances of making the play-offs, given they have games in hand on most of the sides above them.

With the exception of Liam Chapman, injured, and Sam Denton, suspended, manager Neil Allison will have a full squad to choose from, including Ben Morley who played his 100th league game for the club when he returned from injury to play the second half against Hucknall last Saturday.

The Villagers have been playing some excellent attacking football that has seen numerous goal-scoring chances created.

Goals have come not only from the main strike-force of Gary Bradshaw and Alex Davidson but also right through the team.

Keeper Steve Wilson has also been in excellent form and has a determined and resolute back-four in front of him.

If this form is maintained The Villagers will be expecting to come away from Bury's Gigg Lane with at least a point.

Allison is hoping The Villagers can take the game to FC United from the start.

He said: "With FC United's large home crowds, Gigg Lane is an intimidating place to play and the game will be a tough encounter.

"The players look forward to the large crowd and the good surroundings.

"However, we cannot afford to start slowly and concede early goals as we have done in our last two matches."

Ferriby crash to defeat

North Ferriby's Ben Morley

NORTH Ferriby's lingering hopes of a play-off spot were firmly extinguished by a 4-0 defeat at FC United of Manchester.

The final score did not reflect the commitment and effort put in by the Villagers, but they were just given a lesson in finishing by their hosts.

United had four clears-cut chances, whilst Ferriby had a few one-on-one opportunities with the keeper, but he was exceptional.

United got their noses in front with just four minutes gone when a cross from the right was headed over the head of keeper Mark Wilberforce for a 1-0 lead.

Wilberforce was deputising for Steve Wilson, who picked up a virus on Friday, but even his experience would not have stopped it.

The home side made it 2-0 on 10 minutes when Ferriby were caught out by a sweeping move which ended with Tungai Moses putting the ball past Wilberforce.

Ferriby did have a great chance to pull one back but Gary Bradshaw saw his shot easily claimed by the keeper.

Allison wants Ferriby to keep battling

08:07 - 03 April 2009

NORTH Ferriby boss Neil Allison says his side should still target a place in the play-offs despite slipping off the pace in recent weeks.

Allison admits his injury-hit team have been out of sorts in recent weeks, but he wants them to keep focusing on promotion until it is mathematically impossible.

With the Villagers set to travel to face FC United of Manchester tomorrow, they will need to bring their best game to the table.

The breakaway fans' club are on fire at the moment, edging into the play-off zone on the back of a great unbeaten run.

With a record crowd of more than 3,000 expected at Gigg Lane, Allison says his men will need to stop their opponents from having time on the ball if they want to get a positive result.

He told the Mail: "We know all about them from when they beat us at our place, but I'm more concerned about the way we play.

"We can match any side in this league on our day, but we've been on a bad run recently and had a little hiccup, which has seen us drop off in the play-off race.

Ferriby must stop rot

07:43 - 20 March 2009

NORTH Ferriby travel to play-off rivals Kendal tomorrow desperate for a win to get their promotion hopes back on track.

Back-to-back defeats have seen the Villagers slip to eighth place in the Unibond Premier Division.

A 2-1 loss at struggling Witton Albion last weekend was followed by a 2-0 defeat at home to FC United of Manchester in midweek.

It means Manchester and tomorrow's opponents Kendal have both now climbed above Ferriby in the table.

Injuries continue to hamper team selection for manager Neil Allison, and chairman Les Hare admits a tough schedule has taken its toll on the Ferriby squad.

But he insisted confidence remains high as they prepare for the long trip to Cumbria, and says the Villagers simply need a little more luck.

"Kendal are in very good form and have won the last six games on the trot, so it is going to be difficult for us" he said.
