Late strike keeps Reds in hunt

By Liam Chronnell

UniBond Division One North round-up SUPER sub Adam Carden grabbed an injury-time winner to keep alive FC United's title hopes in a 3-2 victory against Newcastle Blue Star in UniBond Division One North.

The Rebels look to be cruising after top-scorer Rory Patterson struck twice in the opening 21 minutes at Gigg Lane.

But the visitors hit back with just 13 minutes remaining before stunning FC with an equaliser five minutes later. However, Carden, who had only been on the pitch two minutes, slotted home deep into time added on after good work from Jerome Wright to cut the gap on leaders Skelmersdale.

Karl Marginson's treble-chasing side, who face Radcliffe Borough in the semi-final of the Manchester Premier Cup tomorrow night, are now nine points behind the table-toppers with five games in hand.

Boro went down to a heart-breaking 3-2 defeat against Bamber Bridge.

Goals from Neil Chappell and Griff Jones had put Boro 2-1 up with two minutes to go but Neil Spencer and Ryan Bowen scored late goals to deny Radcliffe.
