NORTH Ferriby's lingering hopes of a play-off spot were firmly extinguished by a 4-0 defeat at FC United of Manchester.
The final score did not reflect the commitment and effort put in by the Villagers, but they were just given a lesson in finishing by their hosts.
United had four clears-cut chances, whilst Ferriby had a few one-on-one opportunities with the keeper, but he was exceptional.
United got their noses in front with just four minutes gone when a cross from the right was headed over the head of keeper Mark Wilberforce for a 1-0 lead.
Wilberforce was deputising for Steve Wilson, who picked up a virus on Friday, but even his experience would not have stopped it.
The home side made it 2-0 on 10 minutes when Ferriby were caught out by a sweeping move which ended with Tungai Moses putting the ball past Wilberforce.
Ferriby did have a great chance to pull one back but Gary Bradshaw saw his shot easily claimed by the keeper.

A SUBLIME creative display from Carlos Roca powered FC United to victory over North Ferriby United and up into fourth place in the table.
The Villagers, who look a contented mid-table side, could not match the desire and ambition of the promotion-chasing Reds.
North Ferriby struggled to contain the flair of FC United, leaving Roca and Jerome Wright space to terrorise their defence all afternoon.
First it was Roca who eased through Ferriby's midfield with a superb run before delivering a perfect cross for - Wright to head home.
FC United then nearly doubled their lead as a superb overhead kick by skipper Rob Nugent flew just over the bar.
Ferriby would have levelled the scores but for FC United's Sam Ashton denying Gary Bradshaw and Sam Denton with two superb saves.
But FC United's superior passing game was taking its toll on Ferriby and soon Wright found a superb cross for Tunji Moses to head home.
Ferriby were reeling and soon succumbed to a fantastic low drive from Simon Carden, struck from just outside the box.
The second half lacked energy until a stunning strike from Roca made it four. He arrived at the far post to thump Simon Garner's cross home.
Ferriby's best second half chance came late-on as left-back Kevin Larvin fired a left foot volley just over.
As the whistle bleu and Ashton notched up his 50th clean sheet for FC United, a play-off spot seemed to be well within reach for the Rebel Reds who are coming into top form.

Promotion clash is free for under 18s

A BUMPER crowd is expected at Gigg Lane, Bury, tomorrow when FC United of Manchester allow free entry to under 18s.
The promotion showdown with North Ferriby United will be the Reds’ fourth annual Youth United Day, with more than 3,500 fans due to attend.
The match starts at 3pm, but before that there is a series of activities for youngsters taking place near the ground.
From 12.30pm, Holy Cross College in Manchester Road, is hosting workshops in drama, banner making, drumming and street dance.
Match entry costs £7.50 for adults, £5 for over 60s, students and the unwaged.

NORTH Ferriby boss Neil Allison says his side should still target a place in the play-offs despite slipping off the pace in recent weeks.
Allison admits his injury-hit team have been out of sorts in recent weeks, but he wants them to keep focusing on promotion until it is mathematically impossible.
With the Villagers set to travel to face FC United of Manchester tomorrow, they will need to bring their best game to the table.
The breakaway fans' club are on fire at the moment, edging into the play-off zone on the back of a great unbeaten run.
With a record crowd of more than 3,000 expected at Gigg Lane, Allison says his men will need to stop their opponents from having time on the ball if they want to get a positive result.
He told the Mail: "We know all about them from when they beat us at our place, but I'm more concerned about the way we play.
"We can match any side in this league on our day, but we've been on a bad run recently and had a little hiccup, which has seen us drop off in the play-off race.

GENEROUS FC United fans gave Yura Veretemko the pilgrimage of a lifetime by paying for him to see their team play Ossett Town last night.
The 21-year-old Ukrainian has been a fan of the supporter-owned club since its inception in 2005, but had despaired of ever seeing them play due to the high cost of air fares and the difficulty of getting a visa from his homeland.
But FC supporters who learned of his plight had a whip round and last night, as thousands of his countrymen headed for Wembley to watch their national team take on England, Yura was at Gigg Lane cheering on the Rebels.
The kind offer was the idea of FC kit man George Hayden, who has also put Yura up for the week at his home in Ashton-under-Lyne.
George said: "Yura has been coming on the FC supporters' internet forum for a long while, and has built websites about the club in Russian and English which have got other fans over there interested in us.
"We realised he might not be able to afford to come over, so we had a collection for him."
But that was not the end of it. Yura also had to go through the laborious process of getting a visa, and the club also did their best to help with that - and it still took 12 months before he could get on the plane.
Now, after a 15-hour, 1,500-mile journey, he is hoping to help cheer the Rebels towards the Unibond premier play-offs. "I liked the idea of the club when it started," he said. "And now everyone at the club has helped me to come here."
Yura will stay for Saturday's home game against North Ferriby United, but says he is not interested in events at Wembley.
"I don't like international football - it's not proper football," he said. "I prefer FC United to England and I prefer Ossett Town to the Ukraine team.
"I love only Manchester United, FC United and Shakhtar Donetsk.
"The Ukraine national team is like Dynamo Kiev reserves. For me to support them would be like a United fan supporting England even though the manager will only pick Manchester City players!"
Yura picked the right night to make his FC debut as the Rebels stormed back from 2-0 down to earn a 3-2 victory which puts them in the play-off places.
Phil Marsh scored his first goal for the club to begin the revival, Adam Tong and Simon Carden wrapped it up and FC survived a late red card for striker Carl Lomax.

Wrong end in thriller
THE scoreline would not have been to their liking but the occasion of Saturday afternoon’s match with FC United of Manchester will have everyone at Marine dreaming.
In front of 1146 fans, this UniBond Premier Division clash was atmospheric, enthralling and had the feel of a game with so much more a stake.
The Mariners would love to be able to attract the level of home support that celebrated Wayne McDermott’s spectacular volley to send Marine 2-1 ahead each week and would have much preferred the weekend’s match to have been a pivotal to both sides’ play-off chances.
However, the 3-2 loss signalled the Whites’ eighth straight league defeat and now sees them in 13th place - though relegation is highly unlikely, three points sooner rather than later will calm any lingering nerves.
Indeed the much needed win could have arrived against FC United following a stirring first-half attacking display from Alvin McDonald’s men that saw them rally after going behind in the 33rd minute.
Simon Carden pounced on hesitant defending in the home area to steal in and fire past Sean Lake for an unlikely lead.
Marine had made all the early progress with Karl O’Donnell, re-born as a right winger, the source of all that was good about the Mariners in the opening 45.
O’Donnell’s deep cross was almost turned in acrobatically by Joe Doyle at the back post before the former Vauxhall Motors man struck the cross bar with a dipping free-kick.
But, two minutes after conceding, Marine levelled when O’Donnell’s teasing low cross was bundled over the line by Peter Cumiskey and a minute later they stole the lead.
Full-back Wayne McDermott was played into the area before unleashing a vicious volley into the top corner.
Unfortunately the Mariners’ cheer was short lived as just before the break, Carl Lomax barged his way through the backline to steer the ball past Lake - Marine were incensed that the striker was not penalised for a pull back on McDermott.
The goal knocked the fight out of Marine and the second half belonged to the visitors who took control of the game.
Lomax was on hand at the back post just after he hour to prod home and make it 3-2.

Simon Collins' men were keen to pick up three points against the Gigg Lane club after going three matches without success.
And they looked to be on their way when Aiden Savory gave the visitors the lead as early as the second minute before adding a second from the spot on the half hour mark.
But Town threw away their lead in emphatic style to allow the hosts to the three points from the clash.
Phil Marsh brought the hosts back into the game on 38 minutes before Town could hardly catch their breathe when Adam Tong added United's second just a minute later to send the teams in level.
The Ingfield club kept their hosts out on the resumption but Simon Carden bagged what turned out to be the winning goal on 66 minutes.
Town will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Ashton United on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

There's an uncanny connection between the elite of French football and a rebel club with links to the double champions.

Not often will you see FC United and Paris Saint-Germain associated with each other.
After all, one is a club formed as recently as 2005 in the shadow of the World, European and Premier League champions. And while boasting a notable attendance given their status, FC United play in the Northern Premier League, one below Conference North.
The other, of course, boast attendances upwards of 40,000, are currently well-placed to end Olympique Lyon's run of seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles, and boast Ronaldinho, Youri Djorkaeff and Nicolas Anelka amongst their alumni.
It doesn't take a genius to work out which is which, but it requires some thought as to the links between the two clubs. Seemingly a football chasm apart, it is, in fact, their humble beginnings which see the two clubs' paths cross. For FC United could be Paris Saint Germain some 30 years ago.
For those who don't know, FC United of Manchester (to give them their full title) were born out of the frustration of Manchester United supporters following Malcolm Glazer's controversial takeover which led to hundreds of supporters briefly defecting from the club. They are affectionately referred to as "The Red Rebels".
The way in which the club was formed has attracted attention from all over Europe, with television crews from Holland, France and Germany all tracking the progress of the fledgling club.
Since forming ahead of the 2005-06 season, FC United have won promotion in each of the following campaigns, twice as champions and once via the play-offs. This puts them in the UniBond League Premier Division, the seventh tier of league football in England.
FC United are firmly in their infancy, and it's those very beginnings that they share with Paris Saint-Germain. Whilst the original 'Stade Saint-Germain' were founded in 1904, in search of a place in the upper echelons of the French league, the club merged with Paris FC in 1970, and in their sole season together, they won promotion to the top division.
The success was short-lived. The mayor's office was none too pleased with the unification. It felt Paris FC had sold out, and was none too pleased with supporting a club outside of Paris, no matter how near that place might have been. The mayor's intervention saw the club disolved. Paris FC were to remain in the top division as a professional football club, andtheir offspring, Paris Saint-Germain as we know them today, were to trawl the lower leagues.
Relegated to the bottom division of the League, Paris Saint Germain were now an amateur club. Despite the obvious restrictions however, PSG gained consecutive promotions to the top division, with an ironic twist seeing Paris FC, their illustrious neighbours, relegated as they won their promotion.
While Paris FC had yet to bottom out, and continued to tumble through the leagues, PSG went from strength to strength, comfortably establishing themselves as the leading club around the French capital. They moved into the newly refurbished Parc des Princes, ironically once the home of Paris FC, and won French Cups in '81-'82 and '82-'83, putting the icing on the cake with the 1985-86 French league title.
Following that success, fortunes have been up and down. Highlights include a second League title in 1994, three Cup successes in the '90s and indeed a European Cup Winners' Cup triumph in 1996. The club have not been without their trials, however.
Recent seasons have seen off-field traumas dramtically effect the on-field performance, and relegation looked certain at points in both 2007 and 2008. Now, under the stewardship of Paul le Guen, however, they are once more challenging near the top of the division.
So that is some link FC United can enjoy. Figures at the club have set some illustrious targets, and they can certainly take heart from Paris Saint-Germain's rise from the ashes. Whether FC United can replicate PSG's meteroic rise and pass Manchester United on the way is, of course, another matter.
Given the level of domestic and European success the Red Devils have enjoyed, it's certainly unlikely. But sport has a tendancy to write the most unfeasible of stories. Simply nothing is impossible. FC United, 2020 Premier League champions? You heard it here first!
